• LEGISLATIVE MANDATES

• Tourism Act, 1993 (Act No 72 of 1993) as amended, makes provision

for the promotion of tourism to and in the Republic and for the further

regulation and rationalisation of the tourism industry, measures aimed

at the maintenance and enhancement of the standards of facilities

and services hired out or made available to tourists; and the co-

ordination and rationalization, as far as practicable, of the activities of

persons who are active in the tourism industry.

• Agency of the Gauteng Provincial Government,

• promotes sustainable tourism in the region in making Gauteng a world-class tourism

destination,

• aims to contribute to economic growth and the upliftment and empowerment of local

communities.

• provides support and assistance to anyone looking to visit the province, as well as those

planning conferences, exhibitions or incentive travel in the province.

Services:

• offers a host of services to businesses, associations and event planners to assist in the

planning and successful execution of events or conferences.

• arranging day tours prior to your event,

• sponsorship,

• access to travel agents,

• accommodation databases or a list of professional event organisers,

• negotiate transport rates,

• facilitate the provision of bid documents and support letters from local government

authorities.

JOHANNESBURG TOURISM

• Objective:

• promotion of tourism, which entails the initiation, promotion and implementation

of activities that lead to increased volumes of business for the tourism private

sector in the City of Johannesburg (CoJ).

• Primary function

• promote Johannesburg as a business, lifestyle, sport and leisure destination both

locally and internationally.

• Operations include

• running a Convention Bureau,

• running a Visitor and Tourism Information Bureau,

• co-ordinating city-wide tourism marketing programmes,

• tourism information gathering and analysis.

NATIONAL CONVENTION BUREAU (NCB)

• drive expansion in business tourist arrivals

• Established in November 2011

• 1-stop shop for independent information and assistance

• neutral advice on all aspects of hosting and organising any business

tourism-related event in South Africa

• coordinate national bidding, undertake research, and collaborate with

national convention centres and South Africa’s business tourism industry

• provide pre- and post-bid support, destination expertise, convention

planning support, on-site event services, etc

• target for 2012/13 of supporting at least 30 bids, with a potential of 18 000

delegates and R162 million direct economic spend

• established under the Skills Development Act (No 97 of 1998)

• main function: to contribute to the raising of skills

• Training must be to agreed standards, within a national framework wherever possible

• Objectives:

• establish a credible institutional mechanism for skills planning

• Increase access to occupationally-directed programmes intermediate level;

• Promote the growth of a public FET college system that is responsive to sector, local,

regional and national skills needs and priorities;

• Address the low level of youth and adult language and numeracy skill to enable additional

training;

• Encourage better use of workplace-based skills development;

• Encourage and support cooperatives, small enterprises. Worker-initiated,, NGO and

community training initiatives;

• Increase public sector capacity for improved service delivery and supporting the building of a

developmental state;

• Build career and vocational guidance.
