Africa's Biggest Street Party (CALABAR CARNIVAL) started in 2000 as a street parade at one of the Cross River State annual Christmas festival. The first parade showcased major landmarks of the state such as the famous export cocoa pods, the lowlands gorillas of the last rain forest in West Africa, the Leopard of the Ekpe cultural group and the old residency building which once served as the seat of government for the old Nigerian colony.

In 2004, costumes were introduced to elaborate the street parade, and five official carnival bands were created namely Bayside, Freedom,

Masta Blaster, Passion Four, and Seagull Band. As the years went by the carnival became popular and gradually turned into a brand, serving as a huge attraction to foreigners and an avenue for companies to advertise their new and already existing products. With this, the 32day event has succeeded in turning Cross River State into a Tourism State thereby becoming a major source of revenue for the state.

Calabar Carnival has become an annual event in Cross River State and the year 2011 was no exception. Various activities were lined up to make the celebration a memorable one.

These activities included tree planting ceremony, city walk against AIDS, carnival essay competition, canaan rhythms by foreign artists, theater night, carol night, dance jams, carnival beauty pageant and musical jamborees.

The five official bands as their usual yearly rituals, came out for the best group competition. All were dressed in colourful costumes in order to outwit opposing groups both in the adult and children categories, thereby giving the judges a hard time at picking the winner. At the end of the competition,

As usual, celebrated acts like Ini Edo, Jim Iyke etc were present to grace the event while Tuface, D'banj, Sunny Nneji, Bright Chimezie Dare Art Alade amongst others thrilled their fans with their songs. The governor of Cross

With his handprints fully embedded in the Nigerian history, Odigwe Benedict Chukwukadibia Enwonwu can only be best described as a genius, giving credence to his skillful display of art through sculpting.

Our column “MONUMENT”, in this edition won't be talking just anthropology but one of the great personalities whose extraordinary love for art has imprinted, whether consciously or unconsciously his own contribution to not just the art world but our country Nigeria as a whole; through his wonderful art deliveries.

A skillful painter, a sculptor, professor of art, administrator and Nigeria's Ambassador extraordinaire, a native of Onitsha in Anambra State, Nigeria.

Odigwe Benedict as a child was one of those kids who at the tender age of 5 had started displaying his artistic talent with the use of broomsticks, as his first brush, he would paint and draw. He was born to a father who was a traditional carver of shrine images and a mother who, as a cloth merchant had to do a lot of travelling around the western coast of Africa, causing her son who was gradually being influenced by this exposure to attend six different primary schools between 1926

and 1931. Though, said to have been given birth to in July 14 1921 but academics have gone to find that he was born in 1917, coinciding with the period when there was a burst of influenza epidemic, which was when he was born.

Having concluded secondary education from government college Umuahia where he met and studied under an English man called Kenneth C. Murray, an education officer and administrator, in charge of Arts education, Ben amongst four others drawn from across the country was admitted by Murray's Arts school. On completion of his programme, he went ahead to teach Art in Edo College, Benin City, then, Missionary school in Calabar.

With his first exhibition in 1943 jointly sponsored by Shell Oil Company and the British council, he was discovered by Mr. L.N. Harford who was then the Executive Director of Shell Oil Company, West Africa. Mr. Harford went on to arrange a joint scholarship funded by Shell and the British council, having been taken in by Ben's incredible talent. With this, Ben found himself in England studying Arts.

Between 1944 and 1949, he became the first black person to attend Goldsmith college, and Slade school of Fine Arts, both in London and Ruskin College, University of Oxford where he studied Fine Arts,

Aesthetics, Western Arts, History and Anthropology and graduated with first-class in Sculpture. For his post graduate degree, he studied Social Anthropology and Ethnography at the University College, London where he was elected fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain amongst others. With his extensive exhibition in New York, Boston, Washington, United kingdom and France, he became the first Nigerian Artist

to achieve international recognition and on return to the country was appointed the first indigenous art supervisor by the British colonial administration.

Ben's exposure and the fact that he attended some of the most prestigious schools in the world, gave arts administration in Nigeria a face lift. He was later to become the federal arts adviser, which warranted him teaching and inspecting cultural and arts matters, it was within this capacity that he set up the arts department at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He later became the first Professor of Arts in Nigeria, at the University of Ife in 1971 and as the federal adviser on arts, he was largely responsible for inspiring the idea of FESTAC 77 in Nigeria.

His works attracted a large international audience, he became the first and only black man to have sittings by the Queen of England, for the statue of Queen Elizabeth II of England. Some other commissions of his include “Anyanwu” a symbol of the new Nigerian nation; which he was commissioned, in 1955 by the federal government to produce for the National Museum, Onikan, the UN headquarters New York, Sango at Marina (THE NEPA LOGO), the drummer (NITEL LOGO) and the Risen Christ at University of Ibadan.

This national Icon whose works remain in the national consciousness lost the

thbattle with prostate cancer on the 5 of February 1994. His last work the “Ogolo Masquerade” which is the Ibo materialization of man coming back from the spirit world only states the continuity of his Legacy in our minds and in his Son OLIVER, who is presently doing his family proud in the arts genre.

In Onitsha kingdom, Obi is sacred and does not attend social gathering or functions. The Ndi Ichie and other persons involved in the day to day traditional administration are the ones who see him when the need arises.

The consumption of yam was not known in the earliest times. So when yam was introduced, the community was scared and thought that yam could be poisonous.

The smallest kindred were urged to have a taste of yam

when the “Nne-edi” leaves were discovered. These (Nne-edi leaves) were believed to have the capacity to neutralize the poisonous content of yam; if any. This trend continued with larger kindred groups.

A moderately large kindred known as Ugwunobamkpa requested that the first son of the Obi partook in tasting the yam. This was what led the Igwe into a retreat, to pray for the safety of both his son and his subjects. This retreat is known as “ Inye ukwu na nlo”. The inyepu ukwu na nlo is his emergence from the retreat. This led to the Ofala Festival.

Ojude Oba is a yearly festival

Although the Ojude Oba is

the crowd control which is one

The Eyo Festival, otherwise known as the Adamu Orisha Play, is a Yoruba festival unique to Lagos, Nigeria. The word "Eyo" refers to the costumed dancers that come out during the festival. It is widely believed that the play is one of the manifestations of the customary African revelry that serves as the forerunner of the modern carnival in Brazil.

The white-clad Eyo masquerades represent the spirits of the dead, and are referred to in Yoruba as "agogoro Eyo" (tall Eyo). The festival takes place whenever occasion and tradition demand, though it is usually held as part of the final burial rites of a highly revered chief.

It also commemorates the passage of illustrious sons and daughters of the city of Lagos, who have been the prized custodians of its customs and history, and who contributed in no small measure to the advancement of the city and society. More so, it is believed to be a festival of the people, as they go about enjoying the spectacle of how this great city is cleansed of evil and sanctified for further prosperity.

The first procession in Lagos was on the 20th of February, 1854, to commemorate the life of the Oba Akintoye. Among the Yorubas, religions have given way to Christianity and Islam but the old festival is still widely observed. During this occasion, their traditional monarchs and nobles exercise the most of their residual power.

A full week before the festival (starts on a Sunday), the 'senior' eyo group, the Adimu (identified by a black, broad-rimmed hat), goes public with a staff. When this happens, it means the event will take place the following Saturday. Each of the four other 'important' groups;

Igue Festival is also the time

It was a proud moment for Nigeria as it played host to the just concluded 53rd United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) – Commission for Africa Project, which took place at the event hall, Tinapa Lakeside Hotel, Tinapa, Calabar, Cross River

thState from Sunday, the 24 of June 2012 and ended on the

th27 of June 2012. The event was aimed at providing policy makers, industry players, relevant stakeholders in the African tourism and the international community the opportunity to share experiences, information on tourism initiatives and business successes in the sector.

At the press conference of the very colourful event, chaired by the minister of tourism; Chief Edem Duke, more light was shed on the purpose of the event with the theme: “RESPONSIBLE TOURISM OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN AND THE YOUTHS” .

With Nigeria often seen as a mono product economy, tourism is being used presently to reposition the country which is popular for its oil produce. With tourism, the sheared potentials of the country if properly harnessed will place Nigeria on the map with other countries that have embraced

tourism as their major source of income. Tourism utilizes culture as its greatest collateral and seeks to provide a new frontier. In the words of the minister “we need to tell our stories ourselves and

restructure the image of the country as to the negative stories being told.”

There is need for natural resource conservation, protection of biodiversity and integrity of ecosystem which would lead to sustainable natural resource management, to reduce deforestation and promote better environmental attitude for the benefit of today and the future.

Having recognized the importance of the forest to the Biodiversity Conservation in Nigeria, it is expedient that the flora and fauna on the Idanre hill are conserved. The special species of Hyrax that live on the rock which are becoming extinct due to hunting and the special species of monkey usually spotted near the Orosun hill should also be conserved.

Idanre

Idanre hill which is one of the most awesome and beautiful natural landscapes in Ondo State and Nigeria consists of high plain with spectacular valleys interspersed with inselbergs of about 3,000 ft above sea level; the entire people of Idanre lived on these boulders for almost a millennium.

The physical attributes of this hill include Owa's Palace, Shrines, Old Court, Belfry, Agbooogun foot print, thunder water (Omi Aopara) and burial mounds and grounds. It also has diverse and variegated eco-systems of flora and fauna. Oke Idanre contains very important bio-physical and land form features whose interaction with the physical features has

Places

created an enduring cultural landscape within the setting.

Since emigration down the hill in 1 9 2 3 , t h e t o p o g r a p h y, vegetation as well as the fauna and flora lives have remained und i s t r i bu ted . Howeve r, festivals provide occasions for reconciliation of the people, their natural environment as well as reenactments of historical episodes in local Idanre history and its wider Yoruba ideology, mythology and confederacy.

There is the OGUN festival, which is partly celebrated on top of the hills during October and IJE festival, which spreads over

seven days and most recently the MAARE festival which takes place in December and lasts for three days.

Apart from the festivals, which make the site a living tradition, there is a special species of tailless animals called Hyrax that live on the rocks. They are becoming extinct as a result of hunting. Idanre hill with its spectacular view is a must see for Tourists.

LagosIjesha

The Erin-Ijesha Waterfall, located in Osun State is a site to behold. Falling from ‘seven levels’ high in the rocks, the view is as breathtaking as the gushing water is refreshing.

Interestingly, when you arrive at the fall, it doesn’t look like anything out of this world until you begin the climb to the very top known as the Seventh level where the water cascades down to the stream below. Getting to the Seventh level is really tedious but it is worth the effort, to get a glimpse of the bounties of nature deposited here.

DirectionLocated in Ijesha, Osun State. The nearest hotel is miles away in Ada, Ilesha and Osogbo.
