Rear View Camera (RVC Plus) O The Rear View Camera (RVC Plus) provides another dimension of rear ground visibility and safety. Even the trickiest parking spot becomes a breeze. When reverse gear is engaged, the Rear View Camera displays a clear view of what’s behind the vehicle. On-screen guidance lines assist entry into difficult parking spaces.

O Optional extras

Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP)ESP helps ensure that the vehicle goes where you steer it, even in extreme driving conditions. The ESP system constantly compares the actual movement of the vehicle with carefully pre-determined values. Should a situation arise in which the vehicle starts to skid, ESP will apply the brakes to individual wheels and automatically adjust the engine’s power output to help correct the problem. It also minimises the likelihood of spinning off on a curve due to understeering or oversteering.

Media Device Interface (MDI) O

This sophisticated new interface facilitates connection to USB audio devices, data storage devices and Apple iPod®*. The MDI allows audio files to be operated via the in-dash audio system without the need to input controls via the media device itself. The MDI system also provides a charging function.

* iPod® is a registered trademark of Apple Inc.

Passive Safety – Design measures taken to protect the occupants of vehicles from injury, or to reduce the risk of injury.

AirbagsSix airbags (twin front, side and curtain) are standard features. Airbags combine with the seat belts to help reduce the risk of severe head and chest injuries in collisions. When inflated, airbags cushion the head and upper body and distribute the resulting loads over as large an area as possible.

Safety Optimised Head RestraintsSafety Optimised Head Restraints on the front seats are optimally positioned and specially contoured to help reduce whiplash injuries. In the event of an accident, excellent protection is achieved via the seatback controlling upper body movements, and this is balanced with head movements being controlled via the head restraints.

SeatbeltsFront seat passenger seatbelts are equipped with belt pre-tensioners and belt force limiters. Belt tensioners tighten the seatbelt on impact, pulling it closer to the occupant’s body, ideally positioning them for airbag inflation. Belt force limiters reduce seat belt forces on front seat occupants and, in conjunction with belt tensioners and airbags, lessen the risk of upper body injuries. Three-point seatbelts are fitted to all seats, and three child seat anchor points are fitted in the rear.

Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD)Every vehicle’s centre of gravity shifts forwards when the brakes are applied. This presents a risk of the rear wheels tending to lock up due to the reduction in traction. Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution uses the solenoid valves in the ABS unit to regulate the braking power at the rear wheels, thereby ensuring maximum braking performance at both the front and rear wheels and preventing the rear end from swerving out due to over-braking in the rear wheels.

Technology.

RNS510 Satellite Navigation System O The RNS510 system has a user-friendly touch sensitive screen with a high resolution display that shows maps and video. This unique system calculates your travel route with incredible speed. With a generous 30GB hard drive and built-in DVD drive, your music library and navigation data is always at your fingertips. Your favourite music can also be accessed via an MP3 compatible AUX-IN multimedia socket or SD memory card slot.

Active Safety – Everything designed to help prevent accidents from happening.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABSplus)When braking, wheel speed sensors measure the road wheel speed and should one or more wheels start to lock the ABS system reduces brake pressure to that wheel. This prevents the wheels from locking during heavy or emergency braking, helping enable the vehicle to remain steerable. If loose surfaces are registered, wheel lock is controlled to significantly shorten braking distances in off-road conditions.

Anti Slip Regulation (ASR)ASR is a switchable traction control system that prevents the wheels from spinning under acceleration by intervening in the engine management system and reducing engine torque when necessary.

Brake AssistDuring emergency braking, Brake Assist aids the driver by increasing the brake pressure automatically to a level exceeding the locking limit. The ABS is thus quickly brought into the operating range, which enables maximum vehicle deceleration to be achieved.

Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) The Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) permits smooth, comfortable starts on road surfaces that do not offer a uniform level of grip. On loose or slippery surfaces, the Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) helps to improve traction. If one wheel starts to spin, the Electronic Differential Lock will brake the wheel as necessary, directing power to the wheel with greater traction.

Engine Braking Control (EBC) Engine Braking Control (EBC) is designed to prevent the driven wheels from locking if the accelerator is lifted suddenly, or the vehicle is braked sharply because a low gear is engaged.

4XMOTION Permanent Four-wheel DriveThis is Volkswagen’s electronically controlled permanent four-wheel drive system. 4XMOTION distributes the engine torque between the front and rear axles and, when required, individually to each wheel. In normal situations the torque is split 50:50 between the front and rear axles, the Touareg can automatically direct 100% of the torque to a single wheel should the conditions prove that demanding. You can choose to lock the centre differential manually for absolute predictability.

Hill Descent AssistanceThe hill descent assist function allows safe, controlled descents thanks to engine management of engine speed and application of brakes if necessary. Hill descent assist allows drivers to negotiate extremely steep drops simply and safely. Speed is maintained at a constant crawling pace without the need for additional driver input.

Hill Holding AssistanceThe hill holding assistance comes into affect when stationary on steep inclines, utilising the transmission as necessary to prevent the vehicle rolling back.

Safety.

Safety is of the highest priority to Volkswagen and is therefore an overriding theme in the design and engineering of the Touareg. With a maximum 5 Star Rating awarded by ANCAP# plus a full suite of active and passive safety systems, you can rest assured that your safety has been thoroughly considered.

The Touareg’s safety credentials include its rigid body structure which creates a solid passenger cell. Its body panels are designed to crumple in the event of an accident, absorbing the energy of the impact. The Touareg’s lightweight construction is reinforced with hardened, high strength steel to give occupants maximum protection in an accident.

In an accident, depending on the severity of the impact, the Touareg’s safety features work together to protect occupants by deploying the belt tensioners and airbags. The system also activates the hazard warning lights, the doors are unlocked, interior lights are switched on and the fuel pump is deactivated. Pedestrian safety has been considered with a deformable bonnet to minimize injuries.
