When you first begin a career as a Hair Stylist, working in a salon can provide the support you need as you build clientele and fully use your creativity in working with your customers.

You can work full-time or part-time, allowing you to still care for family members. Working with other staff members, under the tutelage of a salon owner or manager will help enhance your skills and self-confidence.

The unique comradery in a salon has often been featured in Hollywood films and can be a wonderful social experience for many.

You can even work in a salon while you are in an accredited training program. The wage will not be as high, but as an unlicensed person you can still greet clients, take

appointments, shampoo and otherwise prepare customers.

As a trained and licensed Hair Stylist, at an appropriately higher wage, you will be the one to cut, colour, and style the customer’s hair.

As the graduate of an accredited program you will also have learned the other necessary skills such as sanitation and sterilization of

equipment.You will also have gained

knowledge in skin structure and growth, skin disorders and diseases, properties of the hair and scalp and you will also be taught vital business skills, to ensure your success no matter where you find work.

Business skills will help you navigate the rules and regulations set out by the government in terms of minimum hours, minimum wages and details on what the salon’s responsibilities are and what you, as the employee, are responsible for.

Generally the salon will pay for the products and supplies, and you work as an employee for the owner.

The cost of running the business is taken care of by the salon owner.

You will also be taught vital business skills, to ensure your

success no matter where you find

work.

You can work in a salon as a self-employed Hair Stylist by renting your own chair. This can be extremely lucrative for a self-motived Hair Stylist who is efficient, has a loyal clientele base and is looking for a few tax breaks.

As a Hair Stylist renting a chair in a salon, the owner or manager maintains the building and pays the utilities and taxes. You will likely have to pay for your own products and supplies.

In this situation, you will be working to build your own name and reputation, not the name and reputation of the salon. Therefore, it is best to choose this type of environment if you plan to work at this location for a long time. It can be disruptive to your clients if you move frequently to other locations and it will be important to keep a steady and consistent income stream.

While this will give you a fantastic start to a successful career, there are many things to consider. It’s important to keep a running dialogue going with the salon owner so that everyone is clear on who owns the client information and who keeps records on everything from contact information to

the money that comes in.You will likely pay the salon a

flat fee, or, a percentage of the amounts charged to clients. This amount would be agreed upon up front. For example, you could pay $1,000 a month to the salon owner. Or you should pay them, for example, 10% of what you earn. These are just examples and are not indicative of what you can expect to pay per month.

As a self-employed person, many of your expenses may be tax-deductible. Your chair rental, your supplies and any other expenses that are directly related to your business as a self-employed Hair Stylist can be deducted at tax time. A tax professional can assist you with these details.

Other questions that deserve clarity prior to agreeing to rent a chair in a salon are; can your clients see you somewhere else, such as your home or at another salon in which you may be renting a chair? Who makes the decision as to how much can be charged for your services? As the Hair Stylist, can you use whatever products you like, or, do you have to use certain brand name products under a contractual arrangement that the salon has with a vendor.

No need to be alarmed! These types of decisions will be clear to you once you have completed an accredited hair stylist program where the business of styling hair will be taught to you by industry professionals.

Rent your own chair

You may already have a flair for being an entrepreneur. You know that you want to be your own boss, uninhibited by others, with the desire to serve people where ever life takes you. Becoming a Hair Stylist that makes house calls could be the ideal job for you.

Unlike renting a chair, where you could also be self-employed, a mobile Hair Stylist would visit clients’ homes or place of business. You would build your business through referrals, with a note of caution and safety particularly if you are female, as it may not be wise to visit the home of someone you don’t know.

Once you have graduated from a hair styling program at an accredited career college, you are ready to be licensed and to set up your business. That means attending to the legal and practical aspects of running your mobile hair dressing business, which could include registering your business in the municipality, province or state in which you will be practicing. That generally includes filling out an application form with your business name, address and contact information along with paying a registration fee.

You will want to talk to your insurance company and consider taking out liability insurance. This means

that you would be covering yourself in the highly unlikely event of an accident, such as burn from curlers or a less than desirable outcome of using chemical-based treatments such as hair colour or permanent wave chemicals. Accidents happen despite all the training in the world and our best intentions and talents. It is a wise business decision to cover yourself through proper insurance.

Once all the paperwork is done, you’ll need storage for your supplies, which includes curling irons, flat irons and blow-dryers; scissors, combs, brushes, shampoo, conditioner, antiseptics, towels and bibs or robes to protect the clothing of your clients. You will want to order your supplies wholesale to save money.

If you have given your business a creative and

catchy name, create a logo for your business. This logo can be printed on your apron, your towels and you can have it painted on your car or have a magnetic sticker done up at your favourite print shop. This is part of your marketing strategy. You can make a website for your mobile business or get active on social media to get the message out.

You will want to devise a system to keep track of your appointments. Use an app on your Smart Phone or purchase a day timer or large calendar, and keep a list of what services your client wants during their appointment so you can pack it in your vehicle before you leave for the day.

People are so busy these days. Imagine the competitive edge you would have being able to bring your professional hair styling services to them, quickly and efficiently.

Styling hair from a home studio or salon is just another way of achieving your goals as a self-employed Hair Stylist. Unlike renting a chair or operating mobile services, this is another way to marry your personal life and your professional life while earning a respectable income.

The trick is balance. Some people can integrate their professional and personal lives very effectively while some must separate the two. Only you know what will work best for you and your life situation.

First, as a professionally trained Hair Stylist, you have to ensure compliance with the rules and regulations in the area in which you live. That includes insurance and learning about how municipal laws may affect your home-based business.

Research the permits you need and the business tax implications. Many people run businesses from their homes every day. It is not complicated but it will take some thought to make sure you have the documentation you require.

Using a portion of your home for business also allows you to claim some nice tax deductions. You can deduct the business-use

portion of your home, your phone, internet and utility bills. If you own your home you can deduct interest on your mortgage payments, your advertising costs and the tools you need to conduct your business. There are plenty of advantages to being a Hair Stylist at home.

The exciting part is creating a mini-salon in your home and purchasing the right equipment.

A salon chair or a portable chair you can put away at the end of the day? A stationary hair dryer or hand held? A shampoo station or a spray attachment for the kitchen sink? Where will you keep your products and supplies?

These are all important considerations.

Think of the clients you would like to attract. Would they be comfortable in a homey, comfortable atmosphere with the television on in the next room or a more professional-looking studio space? Whatever works for you.

Just like a mobile business, a website, business cards and social media campaign will help spread the word. You likely will not be able to hang a sign outside of your home, but you could have a sign on your vehicle parked in your driveway. You could conduct business at home and make house calls. The opportunities are endless.

Whether its personal care or medical care, facilities that look after people on a 24-hour basis for more than a week, including an indefinite period of time will also see to the needs of a patient’s personal hygiene. While hair styles can be fashionable and a key aspect of an individual’s personal appearance, keeping well groomed is also important to an individual’s sense of health and well-being.

That’s why nearly all facilities offer hair styling services to residents, ensuring job security for Hair Stylists of all abilities.

Working with care specialists who are well trained to work with residents in long term

care facilities, the Hair Stylist can be in an enviable position of offering comfort and support simply by offering to cut and style a person’s hair.

Keeping well groomed helps people maintain their quality of life and is a valuable service.

Often, the Hair Stylist will be a vital part of the facility staff with salon space on-site and an opportunity to hire staff in order to provide a full range of hairstyling services for both ladies and gentlemen.

Being a professional Hair Stylist is a portable skill. You can do it anywhere on earth because the need for your services is everywhere. Even in the middle of the ocean.

If your lifestyle is such that you can pick up and go anywhere, take yourself on a global adventure and become a Hair Stylist for a cruise line. Many of the world’s most luxurious ocean liners have fleets of 20 or more ships, and each of those vessels offers hair styling services to their passengers. So, why couldn’t that Hair Stylist on board be you?

Begin with an Internet search of cruise line companies. It doesn’t matter where they are based, as they hire people from around the world. Submit your resume and write a compelling letter about yourself; your abilities, your education and highlight your accomplishments at the accredited career college where you took your training.

When your resume is selected, be prepared to undergo a criminal background check, a physical examination, reference checks and a potential drug test. This is not a reflection on you or who you are. Anyone employed by a cruise line that

must sail through international waters in all parts of our multi-cultural world must be beyond reproach for the safety crew members and the passengers. It sounds daunting, but worth the excitement of meeting people from all over the world in the job of a lifetime.

Today’s ocean liners offer everything from swimming pools to skating rinks. They are multi-storey vessels accommodating thousands

of passengers. Hair styling services are standard on cruise ships whether the voyage is a week or a month.

Cruise ships offer top wages and excellent compensation packages for employees and many of your daily expenses are covered enabling you to keep more of your paycheque.

For those with personal flexibility, it combines a luxury vacation and a fantastic job all under one roof.

In the film and television industries, hair and makeup takes centre stage and deserves equal billing with the wardrobe and prop departments. The Hair Stylist works with the actors, artists and guests that appear in front of the camera.

Your training as a Hair Stylist includes being aware of how colours and shapes are used in design. It is said that the camera doesn’t lie. That’s why the Hair Stylist must be accurate with close attention to detail because a hair out of place and the colour of an actor’s hair is vital to the success of the character’s portrayal.

Working as a Hair Stylist in the film and television industry is quite different than a career in a salon or barber shop. The Hair Stylist must be sensitive to the style of the production and will work with a production designer or the director.

The “look” of the character and the “look” of the production must all be taken into account. If it is a film and the story takes place in another era, research must be undertaken into the hair styles of the day. It can be a very exciting task to work on a film set. A Hair Stylist would have to review the script to determine the scope of work and the hair dressing requirements of the complete

project. The department would have a budget. It would have to be organized, products ordered and a schedule set up for actors.

The schedule would include hair styling for rehearsals, and plus time for shampooing, colouring, touching up and applying hair spray between takes. It might also involve wigs and special effects as required.

A wide variety of personnel is required on a film set such

as assistants, trainees and a liaison between the make-up and costume departments. Good organizational skills and an ability to get along with people is essential. The days can be long.

Hair Stylists are frequently hired on a freelance or contract basis. This type of arrangement can be tremendously rewarding if you like to travel or have other activities to pursue between assignments.

Creating “runway” hair is a unique career and just might be for you! Just like the television and film industry, a Hair Stylist is an integral part of the “look” of a model. The style of the hair must match the tone of the clothes being worn by a model in a fashion magazine shoot or on the runway in a live fashion show.

A Hair Stylist for the fashion industry must have a keen eye for detail. A passion for fashion and knowledge of the latest trends in colour is definitely an asset.

Hair styling as it pertains to the shape of the model’s face will be something you will learn during your education at an accredited career college.

The fashion industry can be full of egos, but you will have

the patience and the sense of humour to get along with a highly creative and often outrageous group of people.

When you’re starting a career as a Hair Stylist for the fashion world, you should have the ability to learn from other, more experienced stylists. You’ll hear that the days are long and the hours demanding, but the work is very creative and rewarding.

Capturing images of your work and building a portfolio of work is vital to obtaining the next assignment. Often, a good Hair Stylist may use a professional agency to represent you and help find more work.

At a photo shoot, you’ll work closely with photographers, art directors, designers, managers

and fashion editors. This type of assignment would be for magazines, album covers, advertising, and movie posters. The list could go on.

Away from the photo shoot or even a fashion runway is doing hair for executives and musicians who must present a certain image or represent a specific brand to the public. It is amazing what services people in the public eye demand and will pay top dollar for.
