ST. LUKE’S, BARRINGTON, RI

Dear Parishioners of Saint Luke Parish,

May the peace of our Lord Jesus be with you all! I am delighted to be joining you as the new Pastor of this beautiful and faith-filled parish. I must admit that this appointment from Bishop Tobin comes as a wonderful surprise, and even more so because I come to you as a “local”. I was raised next door in Riverside (made my sacraments at St. Brendan Parish, and my parents were married at St. Brendan’s when it was still a “new” church

building). I graduated from Riverside Junior High School (now Riverside Middle School) and from East Providence Senior High School. Often, as a high school student, I would sneak over and attend Sunday Mass at St. Luke Parish. Never could I have imagined that one day I would be the Pastor here. I have been a priest for 17 years, and this will be my first time serving as a Pastor (so I ask you for your patience in advance). As the faculty used to tell us in seminary: “your primary and ultimate goal must be to become a holy, happy, healthy priest serving the people of a particu-lar parish within their daily joys and sorrows.” What a lofty job description! However, it is no less true just because it is lofty. Every priest realizes that, despite his personal weaknesses, unworthiness, and sinfulness, the Lord has created (and ordained) him for this moment. As we begin this “moment” together, I will depend on your prayers, wisdom, and counsel. I will do much listening as my pastorate begins, and I will ask questions along the way as I attempt to learn more about this busy portion of the Lord’s vineyard. I am grateful already for the assistance of Father Eric, as we serve as brother priests amid the hectic, unpredictable, and profound rhythms of parish life. I promise you and your families that I will work hard, and I pledge that, as I strive to imitate Jesus the Good Shepherd, I will pour myself out daily for the good of the flock. What a privilege! Thanks for having me. I look forward to getting to know each other. Please, feel free to stop by and introduce yourselves along the way. God bless, Father Tim

Welcome back to all! We are thrilled to see you back at church. We also realize it will be a while before those of you who are considered “at risk” will be able to join us and it will be a while before some

of you will feel comfortable being with us in church. We understand. Everyone is in our prayers. But don’t forget there are numerous opportunities to watch Mass on television on EWTN or watch us livestream for the Saturday 5:00 p.m. Mass or Sunday 9:00 a.m. Mass.

A few gentle reminders. Remember to wear your face mask; sanitize your hands upon entering church ( you may bring your own); observe the social distancing (pews are roped off to indicate where you can sit. You may sit with your family. In the pews themselves are yellow stickers to help you observe the 6’ distance between you and another person/ family).

How do I make a Spiritual Communion

when I am unable to participate in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass?

An Act of Spiritual Communion

by St. Alphonsus Liguori

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the most Holy Sacra-

ment. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Although stores, restaurants, etc. are opening up, remem-ber there are still people who are unable to go out and socialize in any way because of special health conditions. It doesn’t take much for those who are on the way to resum-ing different aspects of their lifestyle to forget those who are “at risk”. PLEASE don’t forget your neighbors, family and friends who are still unable to resume even a little of their former lifestyle - drop off a note, a plant, a meal...

Some Reminders for Those of Us Receiving Communion

Use hand sanitizer when you enter the church. If you prefer to bring your own, that’s fine. Observe the space markers at Communion time. Stay focused and don’t get distracted looking at different masks. At Communion time, if your mask goes over your head, move it to your neck. If it goes over ears, put it on your wrist so that it doesn’t cause you to drop the host.

If you were unable to join us last weekend to bid farewell to Fr. Varghese, you may send him a card to Mary, Mother of Mankind 25 Fourth St. North Providence, RI 02911-1409

ST. LUKE SCHOOL

John Rezendes, Interim Principal 401/246-0990

Welcome to Our New Pastor, Father Tim Reilly: As you know, Fr. Varghese has been transferred to a parish in North Providence

effective July 1st. We will miss Fr. Varghese, thank him for all he did over the past two years and wish him the all the best. That same day we will welcome Fr. Tim Reilly as Pastor of St. Luke’s Parish. He has already been by the school a few times and is very excited to get started. We look forward to welcoming Fr. Tim to his new assignment.

Miss Mary Announces Plans to Retire: Mary Primiano Cavallaro, one of our afternoon CAMP Counselors, has announced her plans to retire. Since she has been here for 12 years, she has probably interacted with just about every child (and family) currently in the school. She was a stalwart, who had a demeanor and joy for living that the students (all of us for that matter) recognized, loved and appreciated. Whether playing a game or Candyland with a Preschooler or making Halloween decorations with a third grader she was always engaged in the job she loved. As you may recall, Miss Mary fell in December and had not returned to work when COVID 19 hit. Her biggest disappointment with how the year ended is “that I was not able to return, be with the children and say goodbye”!

Let’s say Goodbye, Thank You and Good Luck to Miss Mary: It would be wonderful if the children (and their fami-lies) who used afternoon CAMP said goodbye or thank

you to Miss Mary. Maybe make a card, write a poem, do a drawing or painting make a collage or write a letter. We would love to fill a box that could be delivered to Miss Mary as our way of saying we love and miss you! Let’s set a deadline of July 10 for submission of some-thing, addressed to the attention of Miss Mary Primiano. You can mail it to the school or drop it off at the school or rectory.

New SLS Families...Welcome! Please join me in welcoming the new families that will be join-ing us in the fall. This is the first time they have been included in an SLS NEWS. Some of the families are new first timers to St. Luke’s School. Some are sending additional children to join their siblings. One of those current families will have FOUR beautiful girls here next year. One of the new families has three children trans-ferring here from Ocean State Montessori. One of the families includes St. Luke’s alums. We will try to share more tidbits about these new members to our wonderful community but for now I would like to offer a simple and heartfelt WELCOME!
