Latinitas – nonprofit dedicated to the empowerment and advancement of Latina youth through media, art, culture & technology. We offer workshops & training to help girls build confidence and express themselves creatively through multimedia.

What is the Teen Leadership Institute?
• It is an institute that will help young women to develop leadership skills.
• The institute will consist of monthly workshops on leadership methods, decision making skills, goal setting, public speaking, civic engagement, and volunteerism.
• The institute will help you explore your own strengths and cultivate their leadership abilities.

Requirements
• Attend monthly meetings through May
• Organize 1 individual service project
• Organize 1 group service project
• Create multimedia advocacy project
• Complete at least 20 volunteer hours
• Help with at least 1 fundraising project
• Pay it forward – be a mentor

Organize a Girl Empowerment Conference
Example: 2010 Chica Power Fest
– Hosted at Main Public Library on Dec. 3rd from 10-4pm
– 35 girls in attendance from grades 4-8
– Workshops: bullying/self-esteem/leadership/education
– Guest Speaker: Adriana Payan, YWCA – diversity
– Keynote Speaker: Jennifer Sanchez, Su Voz Latina
– Donations: sandwiches, goodie bags

Sample Individual Service Projects– Priscilla remembered her challenges in trying to learn English
as a second language, so she tutored bilingual kids at an elementary school.
– To help preserve her heritage and culture, Alejandra coordinated Ballet Folklorico classes for younger girls.
– Indira saw the troubles her friends experienced grieving from the deaths and violence in Juarez, so she organized a support group for teens.
– Jo Marie was concerned about helping the environment, so she started a recycling program at her school and got her group to adopt-a-highway.
– Liz wanted to speak out to help earth, so she created awareness on her campus about the environment.
– Daniela thought teen pregnancy was a big issue in her school, so she organized presentations about the topic.

Fundraising
Organize a fundraiser to raise funds for the group service project
– 2010 Examples:
• Hosted a garage sale
• Supply drive for workshop materials
• Parent provided help with making copies
• Got items donated for goodie bags (pens, stickers)
