Title of Project: Cognitive Neuromodelling and Representation in Aesthetics

FULBRIGHT PROJECT (2013-2014) * *

University of California, Santa Cruz

Project Description:

The Fulbright-Nehru project on aesthetics examines how prehensile skills, derived from post-hominid evolutionary consciousness contributed towards the formation of petroglyphic art in discrete geographical locations of North America. Paradigmatic components may be identified in proto-anasazi Navajo and Zuni rock-art of the post-Columbian period. Historical contingencies contextualize figures and characters in American Indian rock arts. Similar processes of representation occur in Bhimbetka and Hazaribagh rock-art locations. The emergence of glyphs may be hypothetically traced in terms of behavioral responses towards shock or surprise and techniques of psychological containment, especially as they relate to war, divination, or emotional cathexis.
