Greedy Wunda

Born in Brooklyn, NY Greedy Wunda was influenced and surrounded by Hip Hop at an early age. Listening to the likes of KRS-1, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim and Kool G Rap. Living and breathing Hip Hop during the 80’s and 90’s, Until his mother packed up the family and left Coney Island for St.Paul, MN. At 13yrs old Wunda wasn’t prepared for the culture shock. He felt disconnected and lost in the Twin Cities until he heard Nas “It ain’t hard to tell”. From that point on he began writing rhymes. During high school he and a group of friends formed Lethu Tungz. After a couple years the group disbanded, Wunda then began to record and preform with Vagabondz since then he’s went on to co-found D.B.D Ent with Vagga with a slew of projects planned for release. Beginning with the mixtape “Get2KnowMe”!

It’s hard being an independent artist, but you have to get out there and grind. You have to be more

hungry than the person that’s al-ready out there.

Brooklyn-bred, world traveling, MC,

Pretty Lek’s music is on the rise and ex-

citing crowds from North Carolina to

Italy. He is the man that made the Big-

gie is Back single pop across the inter-

net. He has put out a consistent array

of hard-core, inspirational, reflective,

self-deprecating songs in a series of

mixtapes. His diverse style is what ap-

peals to most and, did I mention that

the man raps like there’s no tomorrow?

Pretty Lek is seemingly overflowing

with potential. His soul and self-driven

style evokes emotion and a little sur-

prise, and a whole lot of anticipation.

So, as the collective patience of avid hip-

hop aficionados across the globe grows

thinner and thinner, anticipation for

Pretty Lek’s music is reaching an all-

time high.

We sat down with Pretty Lek and had

a very fun, and enlightening conver-

sation.

Pretty Lek attributes his love of Hip

Hop to his family, from his older sib-

lings and older cousins to his younger

sibling. “My love for Hip Hop stem

from my family, my entire family is

hip hop. Growing up listening to Wu-

Tang, Boot Camp Click, and Helter

Skelter. I wrote my first rhyme at 9

years old.”

Pretty Lek has a presence of shear

domination when performing. He

performed in some of Italy’s top

venues from Milan to Germany. He

has received much admiration from

many of Italy’s top performers. He

has solidified himself as a superior

performer, opening for mainstream

artists Bobby V., Sean Paul of Young-

Bloodz, and Waka Flocka to name a

few.

I wrote my first rhyme when I

was 9 yrs.

Unlike most artists, Pretty Lek has

spent 10 years in the US Army. A

typical day is not like a normal art-

ist. “I’m actually active military;

I’ve been in the Army for almost 10

years. So my typical day starts with

a 6:30am formation PT in the morn-

ing (for those now knowing, PT

stands for Physical Training, Push-

ups, sit-ups etc.), once I get on, that’s

when the music kicks in, I put my

headphones on, and zone out.”

Pretty Lek is also looking to his fu-

ture, he’s not only thinking of the art-

ist aspect of the music industry, but

also the business side of things, he has

picked up sponsorship from a few

big name designers such as Frank Da

Crank Fashion, and LaurentBeau.

He has picked up sponsorship from

a few other entertainment compa-

nies, and popular clubs in Italy. He

has also started his record label Join

Forces with Kings affectionately

known as JFK.

Pretty Lek’s Rap influences are too

many to break down to just one “I

can’t just name one; I’m influenced

by Nas, Biggie, Pac, DMX, Jay Z,

Eminem.”

The best part of Lek’s style is his mas-

tery of balancing an “underground”

hip-hop aesthetic, with elements of

soul and appeal to the mainstream.

Pretty Lek has labeled himself the

“Prophecy”, or the future if you will.

The balance and consistent integra-

tion of these tangibles make his sound

attractive to the ears and unique.

Naomi Rose is a Baltimore born vocalist

who has been singing since the age of

five. She has been inspired by such art-

ists as Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, and

Phyllis Hyman with her roots stemming

from gospel. Since making her debut

on the local music scene in 2009, Naomi

Rose has performed with Legacy Musiq

of Upper Marlboro, MD and is a former

member of the all girl rock/soul band

Mzery Loves Company. Naomi Rose’s

sound is derived from soul, funk, and

R&B combined with her gospel roots

that she feels makes her an exceptional

This process may include an autonomous and do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing. Most of the independent music artists do not fall into a sin-gle, defined musical style or genre and usually create music that can be categorised into other genres. It is very difficult to track down the vol-ume of independent music sales. Going independent is the new reality for many successful music artists across the globe.

Becoming a successful independent artist is very hard thing. However, as you know nothing is impossible. A person with great dreams can achieve great things. So, you should step out of the door and try hard, and your hard work will always gain you good results. Despite of having all the skills, you must learn eve-rything about it perfectly to make your career shine. You will need to learn to record, market and sell your art successfully. You should take a positive step towards learning new skills or employing others who can do things for you. A successful artist is just an artist who does the right things, the right way, and never quits. Create value and then creativity will tell people about it. Once you create a great music, the key thing to do is marketing. Many of the independ-ent artists think that they to have a successful release, and they don’t market or pro-mote their release, ending up in a failure. Marketing is the process of raising awareness of your music or release among the people. If you don’t raise awareness of it people are not going to know that you’ve even released a song. It is not simply enough to an-nounce you have released a CD on Facebook and Tweeter about it a few times. Real

marketing is often required if you want to make back the money you have invested into that project. That can mean live shows, inter-views, guest appearances, and much more. You have to spend much time on promoting your music to make it successful.Finance the most important thing for being an independent artist. If you are not good with your numbers, you are most likely going to end up dead meat in this industry. The music business has always

been a game of numbers; how many units did your record sell, which position did it chart at, how many people saw you on your last tour. And now more so than ever, it is important to have a strong grasp of finance and money if you are to survive in the industry. With sources of funding becoming increasingly scarce, it is im-perative that you make every penny work for you. You need to be able to figure out how you can use your money to buy the most cost-effec-tive home recording equipment to record your single or EP. It really is a new age in the world of music, and to survive and succeed it is no longer enough to simply be talented, but you will need money for making more money.

As with anything in life, there are certain things you can do as an independent art-ist that can increase the likely hood of get-ting where you want to be. You just need to know what these things particularly are. If you want to increase your music indus-try knowledge and learn the skills it takes to become a successful independent artist then, build relationships with people who have great knowledge about it and you can get many things to know from them, as they will always like to tell you their great experiences. After knowing their experi-ences, you won’t make any mistakes that were made by them and it can help you in gaining success. You need to know that just making a great music is not the end but you need to do many things in order to become a successful independent artist and this can help you in achieving your great dream.

In a time when most Indie artists are surely full of themselves, it was nice to have a reawakening of sorts in meeting up with a vivacious, energetic, talented, and down to earth young woman, Tamara Bub-ble. I got a chance to hang out with Tamara before one of her perfor-mances at the “Guilty by Association Concert Series.” Tamara is from my hometown of Brooklyn, New York. She has a brightness that is contagious, and makes you want to know what she’s about. She told a couple of jokes, and added some insight to her as an artist, and also just as a woman in the music business.Tamara felt strongly about current issues that are plaguing not just the music industry, but young urban community’s altogether. Tamara started The PSA Movement which was brought on by the frustration of topics such as abortion, guys “sagging” their pants, and simply living your life to the fullest. Tamara wrote and performed a series of songs dedicated to these pressing issues. “Pull Them Pants Up” and “To Kill A Baby.” Now these

are two very controversial topics, but Tamara felt an urge to do something about it: “A lot of things were going on in current events, and people were not doing anything. I felt like people were just complaining. So, I came up with this theme of Do Your Part, and then I said to myself, I’m a musician, so how can I do my part? I figured people listen to music, so if I can make music that can inspire, then I’ll be doing my part.”Now don’t get it twisted, Tamara also put out a nice melody that was dedicated to “Living It Up” This tune was definitely neces-sary for those who don’t know how to party. Tamara wanted to create a song that was fun, and could be uplifting and make any wallflowers want to get on the dance floor. This song is sure to make you want to shake-a-tail feather.

Tamara is enjoying being on tour, and understands the im-portance of expanding her name, and her brand. I asked if she ever got homesick “Not really, because it’s always good to go to another city, to see if they rock how you rock, if you do music, you want dif-ferent crowds to see your mu-sic. You have to be able to go to different markets.”

I had the honor of watching Tamara on stage, and to say that she turned it up is an under-statement. Her performance was filled with an energy that was infectious. It was a per-formance that was exciting, and exhilarating. Tamara danced, and had the crowd on awe of her. And if you think she can only sing invite her to any cypher, and you’ll see she can sure-ly hold her own.Tamara Bubble is the complete package, with an album set for release in 2014 that will be sure to have a blend from Jazz to Rap. I am definitely looking forward to the release.

Meena is an italian-born artist. She’s cur-

rently studying fashion design in Venice and

she just spent 6 months in London interning

for the very iconic Vivienne Westwood. Since

childhood Meena has always had a pas-

sion for design and a deep interest of styles

and arts from various cultures of the world,

thus allowing her to fuse many different

looks from the globe in to one unique style

and also permitted her to develop a strong

personality despite she grew up in a small

proviciale town of closed-minded. At aged

16 she discovered photography was another

way of artistic expression and thanks to this

new passion, she honed her taste and skills

by first using herself as a model and then

friends. Years later Meena works primarily as

a photographer at concerts and clubs but

at the same time continuing to cultivate her

love for the artistic pictures and portraits

capturing everyday moments of daily life.

Her amalgamation of photography and

design has truly allowed her to carve out her

own niche, expect big things to come from

her!

When it comes to female rappers, it feels

like they have always been around. Over

the course of all these years they definitely

contributed a lot, not only to their niche but

to the rap culture in general. Mainstream

pop success is a totally different story. What

seemed to work for the successful ones, at

least when considering the pop world, was

over-doing it and creation of almost car-

toonish characters. Nicki Minaj got famous

in 2010, but before her the last comparable

female rapper was probably Missy Elliott in

the early 2000s. Before Missy, Lauryn Hill had

dominated the late ‘90s, as Lisa Lopes of TLC

had dominated the mid-’90s, Queen Latifah

the early ‘90s, and Roxanne Shanté the mid-

’80s. Kid Sister and Lil Mama were quite suc-

cessful just before the Minaj era. A decade

ago, it was Lil’ Kim, Da Brat, and Eve but

nowadays, it is Rye Rye, Azealia Banks, Bri-

anna Perry, and Angel Haze.All of them have

nothing in common, a part of the fact that

they are women and rapping. Some people

would rather classify them as regional rap-

pers, rather than putting all of them under

the same umbrella. The only factor missing

before achieving massive success by Rye

Rye’s is her loyalty to Baltimore club music.

Unfortunately for her the compact industri-

al sound is not widely popular yet. Azealia

Banks’s is representing both New York and

the postpunk/freestyles movement. Miami’s

own, Brianna Perry symbolizes the swampy

south as well as the beach lifestyle. Angel

Haze, the internet phenomenon is strongly

tied to D.C. and punk culture.

In today’s world, the Internet is lying down

the female rappers have to find a way to ad-

In Great Britain on the other hand, female MCs

are much more protuberant and rap has had

its own line of development for over twenty

years. Ms. Dynamite, Lady Sovereign, Estelle,

Lady Leshurr and Cher Lloyd are all good ex-

amples of this and all of them are still active

on the United Kingdom’s market. Hip Hop is

becoming more and more popular all around

the world and each and every country and cul-

ture has their own culture, stars and females

rapping. A good example can be found in the

Caribbean with dancehall and soca and their

specific traditions of rhyming over beats. Nicki

Minaj is originally from Trinidad, and many

times she likes to

looks, connections, voice, background

or anything else that matters when it

comes to achieving success as a female

rapper – it is simply one thing – and that

at age 15 he found interest battle rap scene, and began writ-ing his own raps to compete.

Chase Ultra was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. At age 15 he found inter-est in the local battle rap scene, and began writing his own raps to compete. During this time Chase describes it as, “a hunger for competition. I felt like I had witty and funny ways of saying things, and I enjoyed the challenge. Plus most of my friends were doing it, so it was natural that I slid my foot in the door”. After a few years battle rapping Chase decided to step away and focus on song writing. Fusing the sounds and styles of his favorite musicians and using his unique mind allowed him to find a sound that not only fits him, but also provides something new and refreshing to his hometown’s music scene. After Co-founding the music brand Charm Committee Chase put out the EP “City Investments”, and has his first album “Life2Live” set to be re-released January 2014 via DatPiff.com. Chase continues to perform throughout the Baltimore area and east coast along with other members of his music brand Charm Committee.

Missouri, Abbas is an American

Actor/Rapper. Abbas uses the

stage name AK and has been do-

ing shows in Europe since March

of 2011.

Before then AK did shows in

Kansas City MO, Topeka Kansas,

New York and various surround-

ing areas on mid-west and the

east coast to include jazz and

night clubs and many schools.

Abbas was born to Najmah Qat-

adah (a strong African American

woman) who was born in Phila-

delphia and moved to Kansas

City after graduating Temple

University. He has worked with many local artists and re-

cording labels from a wide array of areas but has never been

signed to any local or major labels. After having his son he

decided to pursue a career in the United States armed forc-

es and joined in 2007. Now a Specialist and a Rigger in the

HHC 173d BSB, Abbas (AK) with a family and a career still

manages to write and perform his songs in Europe.

Music has been a part of human nature since

time began. It stirs something within us all,

helping us to relive memories and feel our

emotions. It’s not just everyday life that is af-

fected by the music we listen to. Research has

shown that music can have a dramatic effect

on the way we perform certain tasks, driving

a car while listening to fast paced music will

cause a driver to speed up and become more

confident in their actions. It is the same for

Athletes. Studies performed show that using

fast paced music can increase the levels of

adrenaline in the blood stream and will en-

courage the athlete to run and place a game

far faster and more aggressively those who

listened to quieter and slower paced music.

Such is the effect of music on Athletes that in

2007 organizers of the New York Marathon

decided to ban music from its event. The

outcome of this decision was a huge uproar

from the runners, many of whom decided to

flout the rulings and run with music anyway.
