THIS IS WHY.
This is why.
Dear yMCA Friends,
2013 offered a wonderful year of growth for the Wardle Family YMCA in terms of membership, staff and partnerships. We’re excited about where we’re headed as a YMCA and thank each and every one of you for helping us become better and better each year. The level of commitment that is offered up by our staff, our Board and our volunteers continues to amaze me, and it’s because of this that our YMCA is able to serve our community as effectively as it does. It remains our goal to ensure our surrounding community understands that we are more than a gym – we’re a cause.
Over the years, the YMCA has been recognized as a leader in providing programs such as swimming, fitness activities and youth sports. In 2013, we were once again able to add a licensed preschool to that list of leadership achievements. As we continue to expand- so do the relationships between members, staff and volunteers as we strive towards strengthening our position as a non-profit Christian organization dedicated to providing high quality, affordable programs for the Beaufort and Jasper communities.
The mission of the YMCA of Beaufort County is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. We’d like to thank our Board for always ensuring we stay faithful to that mission. We thank our volunteers who show up almost daily to support our efforts with our Therapy Dogs Program, our Christian Education Enrichment Program for our preschool and after school, as well as those who assist with initiatives like Healthy Kids Day, Beaufort River Swim, Annual Prayer Breakfast, Annual Scholarship fundraising, Boots & Bling Capital Fundraising and so many more. We simply could not be who we are and offer what we do without you.
As we look ahead to the coming year, you’ll see a rebranding effort that reinforces my statement above, that we’re more than a gym, we’re a cause. In short, you’ll see a creative, effective and focused effort to continue spreading the good news about all the YMCA is and does. Thank you for being a part of all of it.
Sincerely,
Michael Boswtick, CEO

nurturing the potential of every child and teenWe believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for life. Because of the Y, more young people in neighborhoods around our community are taking a greater interest in learning and making smarter life choices. At the Y, children and teens learn values and positive behaviors, and can explore their unique talents and interests, helping them realize their potential. That makes for confident kids today and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow.
Last year:In 2013, 160 kids benefited from our after school programs, where they were provided a safe place to receive homework assistance, learn new skills, develop healthy, trusting relationships and build self-reliance. 54% of these children received financial assistance from the YMCA.
Last summer, approximately 620 children were served through our summer camps at the Wardle YMCA, Whale Branch and Jasper County summer camp sites. Many received financial assistance from the YMCA:
Whale Branch: 40 children 100% financial assistance. Jasper: 200 children 100% financial assistance. Wardle Site: 380 children were enrolled in at least one camp week this summer. Approximately 45% of those registered for the entire summer received financial assistance.
The YMCA of Beaufort County also implemented the Y-USA Summer Learning Signature Pilot Program for children entering first and second grade who are most at risk of falling behind in their reading skills over the summer. Results from the program indicated that students attending gained 5.5 months in reading growth from pre to post test assessment. 100% of the families strongly felt their child increased in writing skills, became more excited to learn, improved self-confidence, became more physically active, made new friends and improved character.
The Y helps youth learn about being active and developing healthy lifestyles they will carry with them throughout their lives. Whether it was through afterschool or summer camp programs, these children built positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork. The Y is about building the whole person from the inside out.
i AM why.Because i am the future.
you Are why.Because by giving back we support our friends and neighbors.
we are a powerful ally and advocate for our communities. We know that when we work as one we move people and communities forward. That’s why we are committed to providing support to our neighbors and opportunities for kids, adults and families to give, join in or advocate in the name of a stronger community.

we Are why.Because being healthy is important to our community.
energizing healthy LivingOur Y will always be dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure communities. Being healthy means more than just being physically active. The Y is a place where you can work toward a balanced lifestyle by challenging yourself to learn a new skill, meet new friends, or spend time with your loved ones through one of our many family-centered activities. At the Y it’s not about the activity you choose as much as it is about being healthier.
The Wardle Family YMCA now offers our ‘Get Started! Stay Active!’ program to all members. Members can choose to participate in a 12-week tracking program or just come in and get body composition measurements and a fitness room orientation. Our members are successfully changing their lives and getting healthy!
Over 60 combined aerobics and indoor cycling classes are being offered each week. Every class from Yoga, Tabata, Fit over Fifty, Pilates, Interval Cardio, Kickboxing, Strength and Madness are welcoming over 25 plus participants! That is all credit to our fantastic instructors!
Our Annual Exercise-a-Thon generated over $2000 toward the Annual Scholarship Program. We look forward to seeing an increase this year.
Our Personal Training staff has grown and our trainers have logged in over 950 training hours. Clients logged in over 15 training hours each!
2013 hiGhLiGhTsFacility: Through diligent financial and facilities management, we continue to invest in maintenance, upgrades and improvements throughout the Y which enhance and improve the member experience. In the last year, careful planning and expenditures resulted in:
• New weight resistance machines• New gym floors• New Y signage• New dumbbells for aerobics room• New heater for pool• Award winning swim programs• Nationally recognized summer learning programs• Two new AC units• New steam room unit• Fence and bleachers for field• Outdoor classroom• Expanded children and adult sports programs• Doubled licensed pre-school operations
Pre-school: Discovery Kids Preschool first opened its doors for the 2012 – 2013 school year. During its first year, there was one classroom with four teachers, serving 16 young children from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. During the 2013 – 2014 school year, the preschool grew considerably. There are currently two classrooms serving 38 children from 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. There is a certified teacher in each classroom, and all of the teacher’s assistants are college educated. In addition, the preschool now has a Parent Advisory Board. It is anticipated the preschool will continue to grow and thrive during the 2014 -2015 school year.
Sports: The YMCA sports programs really took off in 2013! Thanks to an increased number of sponsors and volunteers who make these programs possible, our YMCA sports are among the best around. We worked with over 530 children, ages 3 years and up in the following youth sports programs: basketball, indoor and outdoor soccer, t-ball and flag football. We also launched a strong adult program in 2013 that included kickball, volleyball, dodgeball and basketball leagues.
Health & Wellness: Denice Davis, formerly the Y’s group fitness coordinator, was promoted to Wellness Director in August. Davis has over 10 years of experience in personal and group training and has been at the Wardle Family YMCA since 2006. Since taking on this position, Denice and her Health and Wellness Department have seen considerable growth. Denice has revamped the wellness program and has made great strides in improving our health, wellness and fitness programming.
Aquatics: The Y was able to generate over $5400 in scholarship funds through the successful Beaufort River Swim event, impacting the lives of over 120 children who were able to partake in our “learn to swim” summer program.
The Y was able to host swim lessons around the community at the off-site locations of Beaufort High School, Battery Creek High School, Sanctuary Golf Club, and the Laurel Bay Pool to service groups such as Thumbs Up, Penn Center and the Boys and Girls Club.
• Over 1400 swim lessons taught. Over $26,000 was given total in aquatics scholarships, with over 680 impacted.
• The Winter Season of the Tigershark Swim Team placed 4th in the Carolina YMCA Swim League championship in February 2013. The Summer Season of the Tigershark Swim Team placed 2nd at the league championships in July 2013. Overall we had more than 120 kids participate in the swim team in 2013.
• We had 76 individuals participate in the 100 Mile Swim Club with over 5189 miles swam collectively.
• Over 200 individuals use the pool daily, and close to 60,000 are impacted each year.
