Welcome! It is a joy to worship together!

As a community in the model of Christ, we warmly welcome all who have come seeking God in worship at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church. We welcome people of every race, gender, ethnic

background, social status, physical ability, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Together in our diversity and as a Reconciling in Christ congregation, we seek to embrace the love of God offered to us in Jesus Christ. We gather to experience the presence of God in Word and

Sacrament and to give praise to God who loves us unconditionally.

OUR MISSION:In the model of Christ and for the life of the world, we are an inclusive, devoted, caring and

spiritual community that accepts challenges, takes risks and grows.

We are on land created by God and stewarded for generations by the indigenous ancestors of the Duwamish people, who are still here. We honor the Creator’s continuing presence in this land, confess our

complicity in its brokenness, and awaken to our connectedness with all of creation.

*PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray: Holy and righteous God, you created us in your image. Grant us grace to contend fearlessly against evil and to make no peace with oppression. Help us, like those of generations before us who resisted the evil of slavery and human bondage in any form and any manner of oppression. Help us to use our freedoms to bring justice among people and nations everywhere, to the glory of your Holy name through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

WORD

FIRST READING Ezekiel 17:22-24

Listen for the word of God. Our ears and hearts are open.

22Thus says the Lord God: I myself will take a sprig from the lofty top of a cedar; I will set it out. I will break off a tender one from the topmost of its young twigs; I myself will plant it on a high and lofty mountain. 23On the mountain height of Israel I will plant it, in order that it may produce boughs and bear fruit, and become a noble cedar. Under it every kind of bird will live; in the shade of its branches will nest winged creatures of every kind. 24All the trees of the field shall know that I am the Lord. I bring low the high tree, I make high the low tree; I dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish. I the Lord have spoken; I will accomplish it.

Word of God, Word of life. Thanks be to God.

*GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

*THE GOSPEL Mark 4:26-34The holy Gospel according to Mark, the 4th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.

26[Jesus] said, “The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, 27and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. 28The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. 29But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.” 30He also said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? 31It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; 32yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.” 33With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; 34he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON

Introduction: Pastor Kathy Hawks Guest Speakers: Marie Brissette, Lars Sveum-Hanson, Joshua Liljenstolpe, Dana Wright, Pamela Altman.

The Pouring of Libations with Rev. Starr

The pouring of water libations is a West African tradition carried on by African Americans along the US southern coast. As Rev. Starr notes, it is an offering to our Creator and a way of remembering our ancestors, the “saints” who have gone before us. This ritual was used at Mother Emanuel Church after the murder of its staff and members. Pouring water libations is also a sacred Jewish tradition, connected with the "living water" of the Spirit. The word, Ashe (ashay), used at the end of each pouring, means "may it be so" or "so it is" in Yoruba.

HYMN OF THE DAY "Lament" by Mark Miller

While listening, please reflection on this question: "Where do these sermon stories connect with your experience and resonate?". As you are comfortable, please share your reflections in the chat and comments.

*PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Let us come before the triune God in prayer.

A brief silence.

Holy God, you plant the seeds of faith in every nation. Enliven your church, so that the good news of your grace may root and grow throughout the world. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Creator, even the trees, shrubs, and flowers delight in your goodness. From the depths of the soil to the highest mountain, bring forth new plants. Restore growth to places suffering drought. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Judge of nations, we pray for our leaders and those in power. Grant them the ability to regard those under their charge with humility, dedicating their lives in service to others. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Divine comforter, you show compassion to those in need and provide relief to those who call on you. Bless all who suffer, especially people trapped in cycles of poverty and homelessness. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Sovereign God, this house of worship belongs to you. We give thanks and pray for our church musicians. We dedicate to you the joyful noise that comes from this place; the cries of children, the melody of voice and instruments, and the songs from our hearts. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Here other intercessions may be offered.

God of All, it is your will for people to be whole and free. We give you thanks for the life and witness of the Emmanuel 9. Grant that their faithfulness may be an example for all of us as we work towards an end to racism in our churches and communities. Remove the barriers that stand in the way of our collective liberation. Put an end to white supremacy and other systems of oppression. Connect us with one another and empower us to build a world where all people are safe and loved. In the name of your Child, Jesus Christ, who lives and liberates with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Eternal God, we give thanks for our ancestors in the faith who are now at home with you. We look forward to that day when we are reunited in your new creation. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We lift our prayers to you, O God, trusting in your abiding grace. Amen.

within each cell;with every breath. We praise you, O God. Generations bless your faithfulness:through the water;by night and day;across the wilderness;out of exile;into the future. We bless you, O God. We give you thanks for your dear Son:at the heart of human life;near to those who suffer;beside the sinner;among the poor;with us now.We thank you, O God. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it,and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat;this is my body, given for you.Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper,he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cupis the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all peoplefor the forgiveness of sin.Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering his love for uson the way,at the table, and to the end,

*THE LORD'S PRAYER

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray the prayer Jesus taught us:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done,on earth as in heaven.Give us today our daily bread.Forgive us our sinsas we forgive thosewho sin against us.Save us from the time of trialand deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. "LIFT EVERY VOICE & SING"(Black National Anthem) was originally recited as a poem by 500 students of the all-Black Stanton school in Jacksonville, Florida for Booker T. Washington at a Lincoln birthday event on February 12th, 1900. James Weldon Johnson (JWJ, born June 17th), principal, wrote the poem and collaborated with his brother, John, to set it to music. This song is a prayer of thanksgiving for God, America and Black heritage. Assemblies commonly stand up when singing out of respect for the ancestors. The two brothers produced over 200 songs on Broadway, and became known as the Black Gershwins. After helping Teddy Roosevelt become President, JWJ served as a diplomat until1916, when he became secretary for the NAACP. He also taught creative writing and literature at Fisk & NYU, wrote novels, and edited anthologies of poetry and Gospel music!
