Adviser’s noteI penned the following when I paid my last respects to Mr Lee Kuan Yew

“You have fought for Singapore your entire life.

You have fought the good fightAnd have finished your race.

We will press on.

We will soar on wings like eagles,We will run and not grow wearyWe will walk and not be faint.

We will never give up.

Rest in peace Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

Thank you PM Lee Hsien Loong and your family for sharing Mr Lee Kuan Yew with our nation. Deepest condolences.”

For many of us growing up in Singapore, it is impossible to imagine not mentioning Mr Lee Kuan Yew in the same breath when you speak of Singapore. But he is no more. How do you feel? What goes through your mind? Many of you came forward to pen them down whether at our Tribute corner at Kampong Kembangan CC or at other locations and I am sure many of you also made your way to Parliament House. Thank you for honouring Mr Lee. What I saw was how great a people we can be. I spent every day out at the various centers and also along the queues to meet with and thank those who came. To a man, everyone was patient, polite, gracious and looking out for each other. Volunteers came forward to provide drinks and makan. Individuals sheltered those who needed a little shade. People thanked our soldiers and policemen. While there was litter, it was very little given the crowds. Despite the heat and humidity, many waited patiently, “Considering what he did for us in his lifetime, what are these couple of hours? It is the least we could do for him.” And when it poured as we sent him off, we stood side by side. One nation. One People. One Singapore. We can look forward to our future with great hope. Majulah Singapura! Proud to be a Singaporean.

Goodbye and Thank YouMr Lee Kuan Yew

Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s legacy is not

just the buildings in and around

Singapore, not just HDB flats but

it’s what you find within those

buildings. The flats that enable

all of us to build our families, to

forge friendships that bind, and

that builds our nation. That is the

heart and soul of who we are.

That is, I think his legacy for all

of us. We are the legacy and it

belongs to us.

ONE COMMUNITY DAY

THE TWEETER APRIL-JUNE 2015 5

One Community Day 2015The residents of Kembangan-Chai Chee came together on February 1, 2015 to assist in helping the area’s needy families

Many young men earnestly

took on the taxing task of loading bags

of rice onto lorries

Volunteers patiently sorted out the supplies

into bags and neatly arranged them into rows

The large number of children

assisting with the distribution

made for a heartwarming

sight

Residents of all ages gathered together in the early morning to volunteer their time

Food supplies were unboxed by tireless volunteers so that they could be distributed

Volunteers being briefed about their respective responsibilities

ONE COMMUNITY DAY

Aside from interacting with

the residents, Adviser Tan also

took to giving homes fresh coats

of paint

Residents of Kembangan-Chai

Chee congregated together and

were given an encouraging

speech by Advisor Tan Chuan-Jin

Though there was much to be

done around the several estates,

there was strength in numbers as

there were many volunteers

Some of the tasks involved a lot of scrubbing and washing

A group of neighbourly youths shared a laugh together

The assortment of foodstuff was well-organised

The volunteers worked in teams to transport the bags of rice efficiently

Furniture had to be moved out of some houses so that the volunteers could clean the areas

TRIBUTE DINNER

Some 2,000 residents from

the pioneer generation

gathered together

during the tribute dinner

Residents who needed help

getting around were well-taken

care of by their compassionate

neighbours

Residents went from being

strangers to friends after

sharing stories and thoughts over

dinner

A fireworks display was showcased after the dinner to mark the special occasion

Many elderly residents were happy to have been able to meet with Adviser Tan

An engaging dragon dance, among others, was held to entertain the guests

Age did not come between the residents and the young and old spent quality time together

Two jovial guitarists went around serenading guests with classic tunes the entire evening
