A man who conquered life and all its obstacles to create some of the greatest music ever written. A man who has come to symbolize hope and strength for all humankind. I am a believer in giving gifts, and I am convinced that Beethoven’s thirty-two piano sonatas are a gift many of us have never had the experience of sharing, hearing live, or performing. Performances of the complete Beethoven sonatas are very rare—few pianists have the time or the inclination to tackle such a monumental journey. Ten years ago Charles performed the cycle in Calgary for the first time. Ten years between Beethoven piano sonata cycles is too long, and I found myself with a wish list. That wish list included hearing the Beethoven piano sonatas in concert once again. This cycle also serves to fulfill another purpose. It is a chance for both of us, Charles and myself, as Artistic Directors of Mountain View, to give back to our audience. All the funds raised from these nine concerts will go directly towards the International Festival of Song and Chamber Music Society and help continue to fund our mandate—to showcase talented young musicians in concerts, master classes and recitals. I hope you enjoy these upcoming months of Beethoven—in his own words, “Music is the one incorporeal entrance into the higher world of knowledge which comprehends mankind but which mankind cannot comprehend.” Kathleen van Mourik I have played Beethoven from San Diego, California to New York City, New York, and across Canada from British Columbia to Ontario. Join me in this extraordinary musical journey encompassing Beethoven’s immense energy, humour, and some of his most personal and profound thoughts. Charles Foreman

Ludwig van Beethoven brings to mind the monumental.
