Investing in Our Communities

Kanza COO Nicholas Krehbiel presents checks totaling $6,000 to Lori Montgomery, PCC Ag Dept. Faculty. Also, pictured, left to right, Barrett Smith, PCC Ag Dept. Faculty and Barry Fisher, Executive Director, PCC Foundation.

Concern for community, is one of the Seven Cooperative Principles and at Kanza we fully embrace this ideal.

Community is often defined by people living in close proximity but it is also appropriate to consider people of shared social and economic interests as a community. Each year Kanza receives numerous requests to support local activities and we are proud to donate to many organizations. During the last year, we have worked to think more strategically about how we can be investing in some of our social and economic communities. Two communities that we feel strongly about supporting are agriculture and cooperatives. Organizations that teach students and the general public about agriculture have become a priority. Kanza has provided resources and support to the Andale, Skyline and Stafford FFA programs, county 4-H programs and educational events like Kids

Day on the Farm or events showcasing careers in agriculture.

Recently, Kanza presented $6,000 to the Pratt Community College Foundation to fund the purchase of an enclosed trailer that will become a Mobile Ag Lab.

The mobile lab, that will be ready for use during the 2019-20 school year, will allow educational resources already owned by the college to have a much bigger impact by making them accessible to groups like 4-H clubs, high school ag programs, county farm bureaus in surrounding communities. Hands-on learning from a life-sized model cow with removable parts that can simulate insemination, palpation and birthing scenarios, and a spray table that allows students to calibrate nozzles and study spray patterns requires equipment that provides engaging educational opportunities but is often too expensive for most groups to purchase.

ACCC Director and Iuka native, Brian Briggeman, presents during 2018 Coop’s 101 program for summer interns in Topeka, KS last July.

“Our organization is rooted in agriculture and we want to support educational efforts to help people learn about the industry,” said Nick Krehbiel, Kanza’s Chief Operating Officer. “This program is a great fit because it allows us to invest in the future of agriculture and aligns with our desire to serve local communities.”

Kanza also secured matching funding through both the Land O’Lakes Foundation and the CHS Seeds for Stewardship program to maximize their gift to the PCC Foundation.

Cooperative education is also important to our organization. For many years Kanza and its predecessors through mergers have supported the Arthur Capper Cooperative Center (ACCC).“Even in a rapidly changing world, cooperatives remain relevant by positively impacting their members,” said Brian Briggeman, ACCC Director. “Their approach to creating member value is different than a standard business. For that reason, it is important for us to study and understand the unique aspects of the cooperative business model.”Contributions and support from farmer

cooperatives like Kanza allow the ACCC to fund cooperative research projects, and to deliver cooperative educational programs. These research projects and educational programs benefit cooperative employees, directors, students and anyone interested in knowing more about cooperatives. Kanza is currently recognized by the ACCC at the Chairman level for Contributing $50,000+ through the years and continues their support through yearly contributions.

At the local level, Kanza is also engaging in cooperative education with the next generation of members and employees. In the last year, Kanza staff visited high schools throughout our trade area during National Coops Month in October, sent summer interns to the Kansas Cooperative Council (KCC) Coops 101 program in Topeka, and will be sending a high school student to a new Summer Youth Leadership Camp hosted by the KCC.

For more information about how Kanza is investing in our communities contact Jackie Mundt, Communications and Marketing Manager at 800-536-5614 or [email protected].

Eastern Agronomy CenterConstruction of this facility is the first of a multi-phase project that will allow us to efficiently and effectively meet the growing demand for crop inputs. Construction of the facility will begin this summer, pending approval of permits. Anticipated completion date is later this coming fall or winter.

When this facility is completed, it will provide an efficient facility to support agronomy services and operations for our customers throughout the Eastern Division.

By Bryan Nickelson Vice President of Agronomy

Improving facilities and providing better service is something we constantly strive to do at Kanza. This summer we will begin

construction on an Eastern Agronomy Center that is designed to improve our ability to provide a higher level of agronomy service to our customers located in the Eastern Division.

The new facility will include chemical and seed storage, seed treatment area and agronomy offices. A rendering and layout of the facility can be seen below. The center will be located adjacent to the Kanza Fuel Center located south of Andale off 247th Street.

Convenience stores are aptly named. They provide fuel, snacks, meals and other helpful items close to home with

quick service to get you on your way. Kanza is proud to serve our local communities with our four great convenience store locations: Country Acres in Andale, Ampride in Pratt and Stafford and the Short Stop in St. John. When you stop into one of these locations, it might be a force of habit to reach for your Visa or MasterCard. Did you know that this simple action might be costing you?Kanza’s customer loyalty program, called the Kanza Club Card, is for members who make purchases at our convenience store and cardtrol locations. The Club Card is a cross between a rewards credit card and store loyalty card. Purchases made with the card are charged directly to your Kanza account and will show up on your next monthly bill just like a credit card. The Club Card also works like a loyalty card by instantly discounting fuel purchases by 2¢ cents per gallon.

By Jeff Bolen Senior Vice President, Retail Operations

5

Using the Club Card is also the only way to receive patronage on convenience store and fuel purchases from our convenience and cardtrol locations. Over the last two years, that patronage amount has been around 2%, which is better than many rewards credit cards. It’s free and easy to sign-up and you can get multiple Club Cards linked to your account so every member of your family or business can get one. There are two ways to get cards: stop by the Iuka Bank Building or the Andale Administrative Office to pick one up or call Gretchen Banks at 1-800-536-5614 Ext. 402 to have one sent to your nearest Kanza location for pick-up.If you don’t use a Kanza Club Card at our convenience and cardtrol locations, you are leaving money on the table. Get signed up today and let us reward you for your loyalty.

Featuring brothers Brock (28) and Cody (26) Neville, Kanza members in the Colwich area.

Growing up Kanza

Family farms have a life cycle of their own. As one generation retires, another comes home with energy and new ideas

to start a career and a family of their own. There are ups and downs but if things go well the cycle continues. One family farm started out on different kind of cycle: a bicycle. Years ago, Kanza Board Member Alvin Neville’s grandfather rode all the way from Iowa to start a life in central

Kansas. Since then his descendants have continued farming in the area. Now, Alvin’s sons, Brock and Cody, are starting their own cycle as the fourth generation to make a living farming in the Colwich area. Brock graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in agronomy which will serve him well as he focuses on the crop side of the farm. Cody manages the cattle and performs many of the equipment

Growing up Kanza is a regular feature in The Sunflower highlighting the stories of Kanza employees and members.

maintenance activities as he earned a degree in Ag Power Technology from Pratt Community College. Their younger sister, Danielle, who works as an ER nurse, also pitches in during harvest and when needed. “It’s pretty neat to see how our family is so in-house,” says Brock. “We all chip in and do what is needed. It’s funny to think how far we have come and how all of our separate interests support the farm.” That family participation started young with the Neville siblings. From a young age they spent harvest days in a car seat in the grain truck mom was driving with no air conditioning, then moved up to learning the grain cart or combine with dad and eventually taking their first unsupervised loads to the Colwich elevator. Brock has reason to hope there will be a fifth generation as his 10-month-old daughter, Ella, loves to ride in the tractor.Even with important work to be done, there is always time for family. Brock recalls how his grandma would bring a big lunch to the field and everyone would sit in lawn chairs and enjoy the break together. The family continues this tradition today but they have moved the big meal to the evening and now it is Brock and Cody’s wives, mom, and Danielle providing the meals. Harvest meals also remind Brock of the strong relationship his family has with Kanza and its predecessor, Andale Farmers Cooperative. The meals provided at each elevator during harvest are a small gesture that remind him why he likes to do business with Kanza. “Everyone is so friendly and professional,” says Brock. “You can talk to them on your level, but they get the job done when it’s time.” As Brock and Cody look to the future, they are excited that Kanza is making investments like the Eastern Agronomy Center that will help them to grow. They also appreciate the advantage Kanza’s larger geographic footprint has in helping to access higher priced markets through the movement of grain across the company. As this new generation of the Neville Family Farm continues to grow and find their way, it is clear that they will remember to keep family first and Kanza will be proud to continue to support them along the way.
