Merits of Sūrat al-Qaṣaṣ

This is a „Meccan‟ sūrah.

The surah that mentions how Moses came to the wells of Midian and related

to the aged believer, whose daughters he had helped, the series of events and

THE STORY of his flight from Egypt; and that mentions, as well, the stories of

Moses‟ call to prophethood and confrontation with Pharaoh, his Exodus with

the Children of Israel, and that of Korah of Israel, whom God destroyed. It

takes its name from verse 25 wherein the word “story” (qaṣaṣ) occurs. Its

main theme is the bad end that comes to those who are arrogant and spread

corruption—polytheism is denounced at various points throughout the

surah—and a link is made between these and the disbelievers of Mecca. The

Prophet is reminded that he cannot make everyone believe (verse 56) and

should remain steadfast (verse 87).

This surah and it was revealed in Makkah though some scholars say that it

was revealed in Madinah. The 58th verse of this surah was revealed at the

time of the Holy Prophet‟s (s.a.w.) migration from Makkah to Madinah.

It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) that whoever recites this

surah will get the reward equivalent to the number of people present at the

time of Prophet Musa (a.s.) and all the angels will bear witness on his behalf.

If one drinks the water in which this surah has been dissolved, all his

problems and worries will be solved. Imam Ja‟far as-Sadiq (a.s.) has said that

drinking water in which this surah has been dissolved is a remedy from

illness and worries (this can also be done by writing the surah inside a

container and then gathering rain water in the same container).

We relate to you truly some of the account of Moses

and Pharaoh for a people who have faith.

natlū ʿalayka min nabaʾi mūsā wa-firʿawna bi-l-ḥaqqi li-qawmin yuʾminūna

people to factions, abasing one group of them,

ʾinna firʿawna ʿalā fī l-ʾarḍi wa-jaʿala ʾahlahā shiyaʿan yastaḍʿifu ṭāʾifatan

slaughtering their sons and sparing their women.

Indeed He was one of the agents of corruption.

And We desired to show favour to those who were

abased in the land, and to make them imams, and to

make them the heirs,

wa-nurīdu ʾan namunna ʿalā lladhīna stuḍʿifū fī l-ʾarḍi wa-najʿalahum

ʾaʾimmatan wa-najʿalahumu l-wārithīna

औय हभ मह चाहत थ कक उन रोगो ऩय उऩकाय कय, जो धयती भ कभजोय ऩड थ औय उनह नामक फनाएॉ औय उनहीॊ को वारयस फनाएॉ

and to establish them in the land, and to show

Pharaoh and Hāmān and their hosts from them that

of which they were apprehensive.

wa-numakkina lahum fī l-ʾarḍi wa-nuriya firʿawna wa-hāmāna wa-junūdahumā

minhum mā kānū yaḥdharūna

We revealed to Moses‟ mother, [saying], „Nurse him;

wa-ʾawḥaynā ʾilā ʾummi mūsā ʾan ʾarḍiʿīhi

﴿٧﴾‎then, when you fear for him, cast him into the river,

and do not fear or grieve, for We will restore him to

you and make him one of the apostles.‟

fa-ʾidhā khifti ʿalayhi fa-ʾalqīhi fī l-yammi wa-lā takhāfī wa-lā taḥzanī ʾinnā

rāddūhu ʾilayki wa-jāʿilūhu mina l-mursalīna

कपय जफ तझ उसक ववषम भ बम हो, तो उस दरयमा भ डार द औय न तझ कोई बम हो औय न त शोकाकर हो। हभ उस तय ऩास रौटा राएॉग औय उस यसर फनाएॉग।"

ةها طةظبن ﴿ مة ةمةن وزود ن و ‎﴾٨لػؾThen Pharaoh‟s kinsmen picked him up that he might

be to them an enemy and a cause of grief. Indeed

Pharaoh and Hāmān and their hosts were iniquitous.

fa-ltaqaṭahū ʾālu firʿawna li-yakūna lahum ʿaduwwan wa-ḥazanan ʾinna firʿawna

wa-hāmāna wa-junūdahumā kānū khāṭiʾīna

Pharaoh‟s wife said [to Pharaoh], „[This infant will be]

a [source of] comfort to me and to you..

wa-qālati mraʾatu firʿawna qurratu ʿaynin lī wa-laka

कियऔन की सिी न कहा, "मह भयी औय तमहायी आॉखो की ठॊडक ह।

Do not kill him. Maybe he will benefit us, or we will

adopt him as a son.‟ And they were not aware.

lā taqtulūhu ʿasā ʾan yanfaʿanā ʾaw nattakhidhahū waladan wa-hum lā

yashʿurūna

इसकी हतमा न कयो, कदागचत मह हभ राब ऩहॉचाए मा हभ इस अऩना फटा ही फना र।" औय व (ऩरयणाभ स) फऽफय थ

The heart of Moses‟ mother became desolate, and

indeed she was about to divulge it had We not

fortified her heart so that she might have faith [in

Allah‟s promise].

wa-ʾaṣbaḥa fuʾādu ʾummi mūsā fārighan ʾin kādat la-tubdī bihī law-lā ʾan

rabaṭnā ʿalā qalbihā li-takūna mina l-muʾminīna

औय भसा की भाॉ का रदम ववचलरत हो गमा। ननकट था कक वह उसको परकट कय दती, मदद हभ उसक ददर को इस धमम स न सॉबारत कक वह भोलभनो भ स हो

She said to his sister, „Follow him.‟ So she watched

him from a distance, while they were not aware.

wa-qālat li-ʾukhtihī quṣṣīhi fa-baṣurat bihī ʿan junubin wa-hum lā yashʿurūna

و ںا و ر ہ

ب یھبمت ہک اہک ےس نہب ا ینپ ےن ا

و ںوت رکو اھچیپ اکا ںہ

اھت ںیہن یھبا اسحس اکا س وک ولوگںا ں

उसन उसकी फहन स कहा, "त उसक ऩीछ-ऩीछ जा।" अतएव वह उस दय ही दय स दखती यही औय व भहसस नहीॊ कय यह थ

We had forbidden him to be suckled by any nurse

since before. So she said,

wa-ḥarramnā ʿalayhi l-marāḍiʿa min qablu fa-qālat

हभन ऩहर ही स दध वऩरानवालरमो को उसऩय हयाभ कय ददमा। अत उसन (भसा की फहन स) कहा

‎﴾١٢هةلصن ﴿„Shall I show you a household that will take care of him

for you and will be his well-wishers?‟

hal ʾadullukum ʿalā ʾahli baytin yakfulūnahū lakum wa-hum lahū nāṣiḥūna

ں ہتپ اک و ا ولں رھگ ا ےسی ںیہمت ںیم ایک

یکوج ا س اتبو

कक "कमा भ तमह ऐस घयवारो का ऩता फताऊॉ जो तमहाय लरए इसक ऩारन-ऩोषण का सतजमभा र औय इसक शब-गचॊतक हो?"

Thus We restored him to his mother so that she might

be comforted and not grieve, and that she might

know that

fa-radadnāhu ʾilā ʾummihī kay taqarra ʿaynuhā wa-lā taḥzana wa-li-taʿlama

ا ہک د ن ا اٹلپرطف یک امں یکا ں

و ہا و ر وہاجےئ ڈنھٹی ا ھکن یکا ں

ہک وہاجےئولعمم ا ںیہنا و ر ر ںیہ

इस परकाय हभ उस उसकी भाॉ क ऩास रौटा राए, ताकक उसकी आॉख ठॊडी हो औय वह शोकाकर न हो औय ताकक वह जान र

Allah‟s promise is true, but most of them do not know.

ʾanna waʿda llāhi ḥaqqun wa-lākinna ʾaktharahum lā yaʿlamūna

یک ولوگں ا رگہچ ےہ اچس رہباحل و دعہ اک ا هلل

कक अलराह का वादा सचचा ह, ककनत उनभ स अगधकतय रोग जानत नहीॊ

When he came of age and became fully matured, We

gave him judgement and knowledge, and thus do

We reward the virtuous.

wa-lammā balagha ʾashuddahū wa-stawā ʾātaynāhu ḥukman wa-ʿilman wa-ka-

dhālika najzī l-muḥsinīna

औय जफ वह अऩनी जवानी को ऩहॉचा औय बयऩय हो गमा, तो हभन उस ननणणम-शसतकत औय ऻान परदान ककमा। औय सकभी रोगो को हभ इसी परकाय फदरा दत ह

ى ‎ؾعو[One day] he entered the city at a time when its people

dwelt in distraction. He found there two men

fighting, this one from among his followers, and that

one from his enemies.

The one who was from his followers sought his help

against him who was from his enemies. So Moses

hit him with his fist, whereupon he expired.

He said, „This is of Satan‟s doing. Indeed he is an

enemy, manifestly misguiding.‟

He said, „My Lord! I have wronged myself. Forgive me!‟

So He forgave him. Indeed He is the All-forgiving,

the All-merciful.

behold, the one who had sought his help the day

before, shouted for his help [once again].!‟

But when he wanted to strike him who was an enemy

of both of them, he said, „Moses, do you want to kill

me, just like the one you killed yesterday?

fa-lammā ʾan ʾarāda ʾan yabṭisha bi-lladhī huwa ʿaduwwun lahumā qāla yā-

mūsā ʾa-turīdu ʾan taqtulanī ka-mā qatalta nafsan bi-l-ʾamsi

conspiring to kill you. So leave. I am indeed your

well-wisher.‟

a throng of people watering [their flocks], and he

found, besides them, two women holding back [their

flock]. He said, „What is your business?‟

wa-lammā warada māʾa madyana wajada ʿalayhi ʾummatan mina n-nāsi

yasqūna wa-wajada min dūnihimu mraʾatayni tadhūdāni

ʾajra mā saqayta lanā

the best you can hire is a powerful and trustworthy

उन दोनो सतसिमो भ स एक न कहा, "ऐ भय फाऩ! इसको भजदयी ऩय यख रीसतजए। अचछा वमसतकत, सतजस आऩ भजदयी ऩय यख, वही ह जो फरवान, अभानतदाय हो।"

do not want to be hard on you. God willing, you will

find me to be one of the righteous.‟

tajidunī ʾin shāʾa llāhu mina ṣ-ṣāliḥīna

me. Whichever of the two terms I complete, there

shall be no reprisal against me, and Allah is witness

over what we say.‟

He said to his family, „Wait! Indeed I descry a fire!

Maybe I will bring you some news from it, or a brand

of fire so that you may warm yourselves.‟

qāla li-ʾahlihi mkuthū ʾinnī ʾānastu nāran laʿallī ʾātīkum minhā bi-khabarin ʾaw

jadhwatin mina n-nāri laʿallakum taṣṭalūna

bank of the valley at the blessed spot from the tree:

„Moses! Indeed I am Allah, the Lord of all the

worlds!‟

fa-lammā ʾatāhā nūdiya min shāṭiʾi l-wādi l-ʾaymani fī l-buqʿati l-mubārakati

mina sh-shajarati ʾan yā-mūsā ʾinnī ʾana llāhu rabbu l-ʿālamīna

speech. So send him with me as a helper to confirm

lahū ʿāqibatu d-dāri ʾinnahū lā yufliḥu ẓ-ẓālimūna

You were not on the western side when We revealed

the commandments to Moses, nor were you among

the witnesses.

reciting to them Our signs, but it is We who are the

Say, „Then bring some Book from Allah better in

guidance than the two so that I may follow it, should

you be truthful.‟

it. It is indeed the truth from our Lord. Indeed we

were muslims [even] before it [came].‟

kunnā min qablihī muslimīna

Those will be given their reward two times for their

patience. They repel evil [conduct] with good, and

spend out of what We have provided them,

s-sayyiʾata wa-mimmā razaqnāhum yunfiqūna

„Our deeds belong to us, and your deeds belong to

you. Peace be to you. We do not court the ignorant.‟

ʾaʿmālukum salāmun ʿalaykum lā nabtaghī l-jāhilīna

औय जफ व वमथण की फात सनत ह तो मह कहत हए उसस ककनाया खीॊच रत ह कक "हभाय लरए हभाय कभण ह औय तमहाय लरए तमहाय कभण ह। तभको सराभ ह! जादहरो को हभ नहीॊ

चाहत।"

where fruits of all kinds are brought as a provision

from Us? But most of them do not know.

shayʾin rizqan min ladunnā wa-lākinna ʾaktharahum lā yaʿlamūna

dwellings, uninhabited after them except by a few,

and We were the [sole] inheritors.

tuskan min baʿdihim ʾillā qalīlan wa-kunnā naḥnu l-wārithīna

Whatever things you have been given are only the

wares of the life of this world and its glitter, and

what is with Allah is better and more lasting. Will

you not apply reason?

wa-mā ʾūtītum min shayʾin fa-matāʿu l-ḥayāti d-dunyā wa-zīnatuhā wa-mā ʿinda

llāhi khayrun wa-ʾabqā ʾa-fa-lā taʿqilūna

matāʿa l-ḥayāti d-dunyā thumma huwa yawma l-qiyāmati mina l-muḥḍarīna

We perverted them as we were perverse ourselves. We

plead for non-liability before You: it was not us that

they worshipped.‟

It will be said, „Invoke your partners!‟ So they will

invoke them, but they will not respond to them, and

they will sight the punishment, wishing they had

followed guidance.

wa-qīla dʿū shurakāʾakum fa-daʿawhum fa-lam yastajībū lahum wa-raʾawu l-

ʿadhāba law ʾannahum kānū yahtadūna

Your Lord creates whatever He wishes and chooses.

They have no choice. Immaculate is Allah and

exalted above [having] any partners they ascribe [to

Him].

wa-rabbuka yakhluqu mā yashāʾu wa-yakhtāru mā kāna lahumu l-khiyaratu

subḥāna llāhi wa-taʿālā ʿammā yushrikūna

belongs to Him in this world and the Hereafter. All

ḥukmu wa-ʾilayhi turjaʿūna

tabtaghū min faḍlihī wa-laʿallakum tashkurūna

ʾanna l-ḥaqqa li-llāhi wa-ḍalla ʿanhum mā kānū yaftarūna

bullied them. We had given him so much treasures

kunūzi mā ʾinna mafātiḥahū la-tanūʾu bi-l-ʿuṣbati ʾulī l-quwwati

By the means of what Allah has given you, seek the

abode of the Hereafter, while not forgetting your

share of this world.

wa-btaghi fī-mā ʾātāka llāhu d-dāra l-ʾākhirata wa-lā tansa naṣībaka mina d-

Be good [to others] just as Allah has been good to

you, and do not try to cause corruption in the land.

Indeed Allah does not like the agents of corruption.‟

wa-ʾaḥsin ka-mā ʾaḥsana llāhu ʾilayka wa-lā tabghi l-fasāda fī l-ʾarḍi ʾinna llāha

lā yuḥibbu l-mufsidīna

औय बराई कय, जसा कक अलराह न तय साथ बराई की ह, औय धयती का बफगाड भत चाह। ननशचम ही अलराह बफगाड ऩदा कयनवारो को ऩसनद नहीॊ कयता।"

He said, „I have indeed been given [all] this because of

the knowledge that I have.‟ Did he not know that

Allah had already destroyed before him some of the

generations

qāla ʾinnamā ʾūtītuhū ʿalā ʿilmin ʿindī ʾa-wa-lam yaʿlam ʾanna llāha qad ʾahlaka

min qablihī mina l-qurūni

م ال ‎﴾٧٨ذهبwho were more powerful than him and greater in

amassing [wealth]? The guilty will not be questioned

about their sins.

man huwa ʾashaddu minhu quwwatan wa-ʾaktharu jamʿan wa-lā yusʾalu ʿan

dhunūbihimu l-mujrimūna

So he emerged before his people in his finery. Those

who desired the life of the world said, „We wish we

had like what Korah has been given! Indeed he is

greatly fortunate.‟

fa-kharaja ʿalā qawmihī fī zīnatihī qāla lladhīna yurīdūna l-ḥayāta d-dunyā yā-

layta lanā mithla mā ʾūtiya qārūnu ʾinnahū la-dhū ḥaẓẓin ʿaẓīmin

कपय वह अऩनी ौभ क साभन अऩन ठाठ-फाट भ ननकरा। जो रोग साॊसारयक जीवन क चाहनवार थ, उनहोन कहा, "कमा ही अचछा होता जसा कछ ारन को लभरा ह, हभ बी लभरा

होता! वह तो फडा ही बागमशारी ह।"

﴿٨٠﴾‎Those who were given knowledge said, „Woe to you!

Allah‟s reward is better for someone who has faith

and acts righteously, and no one will receive it

except the patient.‟

wa-qāla lladhīna ʾūtū l-ʿilma waylakum thawābu llāhi khayrun li-man ʾāmana

wa-ʿamila ṣāliḥan wa-lā yulaqqāhā ʾillā ṣ-ṣābirūna

ककनत सतजनको ऻान परापत था, उनहोन कहा, "अिसोस तभऩय! अलराह का परनतदान उततभ ह, उस वमसतकत क लरए जो ईभान राए औय अचछा कभण कय, औय मह फात उनहीभ क ददरो भ

ऩडती ह जो धमणवान होत ह।"

﴿٨١﴾‎So We caused the earth to swallow him and his house,

and he had no party that might protect him from

Allah, nor could he rescue himself.

fa-khasafnā bihī wa-bi-dārihi l-ʾarḍa fa-mā kāna lahū min fiʾatin yanṣurūnahū

min dūni llāhi wa-mā kāna mina l-muntaṣirīna

هعر فةء من ؾبةدى و زق لمن بؾط الػ ‎الل ي By dawn those who longed to be in his place the day

before were saying, „Don‟t you see that Allah

expands the provision for whomever He wishes of

His servants, and tightens it?

wa-ʾaṣbaḥa lladhīna tamannaw makānahū bi-l-ʾamsi yaqūlūna way-ka-ʾanna

llāha yabsuṭu r-rizqa li-man yashāʾu min ʿibādihī wa-yaqdiru

अफ वही रोग, जो कर उसक ऩद की काभना कय यह थ, कहन रग, "अिसोस हभ बर गए थ कक अलराह अऩन फनदो भ स सतजसक लरए चाहता ह योजी कशादा कयता ह औय सतजस

चाहता ह नऩी-तरी दता ह।

‎﴾٨٢الHad Allah not shown us favour, He might have made

the earth swallow us too. Don‟t you see that the

faithless do not prosper.‟

law-lā ʾan manna llāhu ʿalaynā la-khasafa binā way-ka-ʾannahū lā yufliḥu l-

kāfirūna

मदद अलराह न हभऩय उऩकाय न ककमा होता तो हभ बी धॉसा दता। अिसोस हभ बर गए थ कक इनकाय कयनवार सपर नहीॊ हआ कयत।"

‎﴾٨٣ل الThis is the abode of the Hereafter which We shall grant

to those who do not desire to domineer in the earth

nor to cause corruption, and the outcome will be in

favour of the Godwary.

tilka d-dāru l-ʾākhiratu najʿaluhā li-lladhīna lā yurīdūna ʿuluwwan fī l-ʾarḍi wa-lā

fasādan wa-l-ʿāqibatu li-l-muttaqīna

ؿملن ﴿ ٨٤﴾‎Whoever brings virtue shall receive [a reward] better

than it, but whoever brings vice —those who commit

misdeeds shall not be requited except for what they

used to do.

man jāʾa bi-l-ḥasanati fa-lahū khayrun minhā wa-man jāʾa bi-s-sayyiʾati fa-lā

yujzā lladhīna ʿamilū s-sayyiʾāti ʾillā mā kānū yaʿmalūna

जो कोई अचछा आचायण रकय आमा उस उसस उततभ परापत होगा, औय जो फया आचयण रकय आमा तो फयाइमाॉ कयनवारो को तो वस वही लभरगा जो व कयत थ

بن ﴿ ‎﴾٨٥مIndeed He who has revealed to you the Qurʾān will

surely restore you to the place of return. Say, „My

Lord knows best him who brings guidance and him

who is in manifest error.‟

ʾinna lladhī faraḍa ʿalayka l-qurʾāna la-rādduka ʾilā maʿādin qul rabbī ʾaʿlamu

man jāʾa bi-l-hudā wa-man huwa fī ḍalālin mubīnin

सतजसन इस यआन की सतजमभदायी तभऩय डारी ह, वह तमह उसक (अचछ) अॊजाभ तक जरय ऩहॉचाएगा। कहो, "भया यफ उस बरी-बाॉनत जानता ह जो भागणदशणन रकय आमा, औय उस बी

जो खरी गभयाही भ ऩडा ह।"

you; but it was a mercy from your Lord. So do not be

takūnanna ẓahīran li-l-kāfirīna

they have been sent down to you. Invite to your

Lord, and never be one of the polytheists.

rabbika wa-lā takūnanna mina l-mushrikīna

no god except Him. Everything is to perish except

His Face. All judgement belongs to Him, and to Him

you will be brought back.

ह औय उसी की ओय तभ सफको रौटकय जाना ह
