As the end of the Chapter year

approaches, it‘s time to nominate

and elect new officers to govern

the Central Ohio IIA Chapter for

2011 – 2012. In this article, I

would like to give you a little

insight into this process and also

present volunteer opportunities

that are available in the up com-

ing chapter year (June 1 – May

31).

Throughout the year the nomi-

nation process allows the mem-

bership and the nomination com-

mittee to identify our potential

officers for the new year. These

nominees will be presented to

the membership, at the April

12th meeting by our Nomination

Chairperson, Mukesh Singh. The

next step is to vote for the se-

lected nominees who will fill the

six officer positions. The elec-

tion also occurs at our April

meeting. Upon election, the new

officers will assume their respon-

sibilities for the next chapter

year. Each term lasts for one

year; however, we do have indi-

viduals who have been nomi-

nated and elected to serve in the

same position for multiple years.

Also, see page 6 for additional

information.

What else can you do to help

the chapter if being an officer is

not your cup of tea?

There are many ways to help the

chapter from attending the

monthly meetings and seminars,

to volunteering on the many

chapter committees. These

committees are put in place to

support the overall goals of the

chapter which ultimately benefit

the membership. The officers are responsible to assist and

support their respective commit-

tees.

A few examples of the various

committees include: attendance/

registration, awards/gifts, career

fair, CPE, facilities, membership,

speakers, etc. As you can see,

the committees are very broad

in subject matter. We encour-

age volunteers to serve on multi-

ple committees with each com-

mittee having at least two volun-

teers.

If you have any interest in serving

on one or more committees,

please contact me or any of our

other officers. You will also have

the opportunity to volunteer on

our many committees at the May (Continued on page 2)

The IIA Central Ohio Chapter offers its members and non-members the opportunity to advertise job openings in the Chapter’s monthly IIA

publication, The Spreadsheet, have them posted on the Chapter’s website, and have them distributed to the Chapter members through e-

mail for a nominal cost. For members and those organizations with member employees, an ad is $100 and for non-member organizations

the cost is $250. This provides direct access to a large dedicated pool of individuals in the profession. Please direct your job posting adver-

tisements to Ruth Nouanesengsy at [email protected]. Submissions should be made by the 10th of the month to be included in the

current month’s newsletter which is typically published on or near the 15th of the month.

In addition to advertising job openings, organizations can support the Chapter’s website for an annual sponsorship fee of $100. This will

entitle each sponsor the opportunity to place their logo on the website. Your organization’s support is greatly appreciated. Please take ad-

vantage of these services. Please direct your sponsorship inquiries to Amy Schwartz at [email protected].

Do Your Employees Feel Valued?

Recognizing employees for first-rate work

isn’t just a nice gesture: It boosts morale,

increases productivity, and helps retain top

performers. But singling out staff who

make a difference often becomes an “I’ll-

get-around-to-it-later” task for busy man-

agers. Many wait too long for kudos to

have the desired impact, fail to match

praise with the achievement, or forget to

say thank you altogether.

If you’ve been faltering lately in giving

hardworking team members rewards for

exceptional effort, take action now. Hiring

of financial professionals is beginning to

accelerate, and you don’t want to risk los-

ing your best employees to the competition

because they don’t feel valued. Here are

three ways to let talented professionals

know you appreciate their contributions:

Give timely praise – and encourage oth-

ers to do so, too.

Be quick to acknowledge employees’ ac-

complishments. Often, a verbal thank-you

or handwritten note directly from you can

go a long way toward making a team

member feel valued. However, accolades

shouldn’t come just from the top. Praise

from colleagues is often as meaningful as a

nod from a manager, so be sure to foster a

culture that encourages peers to commend

each other openly for a job well done.

How you offer kudos depends on the situa-

tion. Some ideas: Praising an individual or

an entire project team during a staff meet-

ing, spotlighting their achievements in an

article on the firm’s intranet or in its news-

letter, or rewarding them with a paid day

off or a special outing such as lunch or a

movie.

Reward your top people.

Elevating high-

performing em-

ployees to the

next level has

always been a

practical way to

reward top talent.

But in the current economy, upward oppor-

tunities may be scarce for firms who had to

reduce staff and are still operating with

smaller budgets.

If you’re unable to promote deserving

employees right now, invest in their con-

tinued growth through relevant training.

Twenty-nine percent of chief financial

officers interviewed in a new Robert Half

survey said their companies will offer

subsidized training and education this year

as a way to reward, attract and hold on to

talented financial professionals. Also keep

staff feeling engaged by expanding their

scope of responsibility or assigning chal-

lenging projects. Be sure to first discuss

these opportunities with them and find out if

there are other developmental areas they might

prefer.

Don’t go overboard: Make praise meaning-

ful.

While there’s no substitute for thanking em-

ployees for their hard work and accomplish-

ments on a regular basis, be careful not to take

it too far. Avoid praising team members for

simply carrying out their

basic job requirements

and reserve accolades for

truly standout perform-

ance. When possible, tie

recognition to achieve-

ment of specific business

results.

A culture that recognizes and rewards high

performance is a key aspect of the most suc-

cessful companies. Your most valued staff

members need to know they make a difference

and that the firm performs better because they

are part of the team.
