With recent rumors floating around campus about the future of priority numbers, it has raised the question of what is going to hap-pen regarding them.

Rumors have ranged from them just changing how priority numbers are used to administration getting rid of the priority sys-tem as a whole.

After speaking to Dean of Counseling

Matt Kritscher, it is clear that priority num-bers are here to stay.

In a recent interview with the Spectator, Dean Kritscher stated, “We are looking to-wards streamlining the priority number pro-cess. The board has discussed it, but it has not been finalized yet.”

So what exactly does that mean? It essentially means that the students who

are the closest to graduating will be given higher priority numbers instead of the cur-rent system which Dean Kritscher said was, “unfair”.

The current system relies on the Student Educational Plan (SEP), which freshmen usually get after meeting with a counselor.

Those freshman who take the initiative to meet up with a counselor right away, and

follow that educational plan end up getting the higher priority numbers.

After talking to current student Jon Comeaux, it is clear that the current sys-tem isn’t working for some students.

“With being so close to graduating it is frustrating not having the ability to get the classes I need just because I have a low priority number.”

This system will give the students who are close to graduating to get the classes they need faster, helping them finish school much more efficiently.

For more information on the cur-rent priority number system, talk to the counling office in the 700 building and schedual an appointment or email at [email protected].

OPINION

Advice for incoming students

Once again we’re back to the ruckus -- from finding parking to accommodating to our classes. Every semester, Chabot students must go through the same procedure of waiting for the bus, getting to class on time, adding classes, meeting up with friends, etc. When I came into Chabot I was not that all prepared, but I had the luck of having my siblings to teach me the many things that Chabot offers. For those who do not have the same luck, you have to search everywhere you go for information! One of the things that new students need to know, is that building 700 is where most of your answers will be. That is where all the counselors are, admissions and records, and financial aid to help you with registration or paying fees. As new students, you should not be afraid to seek for help because if you do not get your questions answered, then that may come to have severe consequences for you - such as taking a class that you did not need or not knowing which classes to get for your major or degree. The school vibe is definitely on around the campus and its time to adjust to the procedures. To new students, it is safe to say good luck, because trust me -- you will need it. Coming into Chabot can be a good experience since the counselors will help you with any concerns that you have and many teachers will help you when you need it for your courses. Having trouble with your classes can be just as difficult as finding them. Lucky for students, there are maps around campus and on the last page of this issue of the campus that will help you find your way if you ever had trouble looking for a class. Being new to Chabot gives you the opportunity to socialize with many people and know them. This can bring opportunities to you by knowing people of different ages, ethnicities, hobbies and backgrounds for you to learn from. Knowing different people can also give an advantage to learn more about the organizations and clubs that formed here at Chabot. There are many clubs such as the Spectator Newspaper located in 2325 at the top of the cafeteria. There are also other clubs and organizations such as the ASCC student government, DECA, the different ethnicity clubs, the ICC, the EOPS and many more that are offered. I suggest getting involved in one of the many organizations and clubs is one of the great experiences that one can have due to the real world experience that you will gain and the opportunities of meeting people that can help you along the way to your success.

Coming to Chabot is an opportunity for you and everyone

else around you, so don’t be afraid to stand out and get

involved!
