“Thus says the Lord God: I myself will look after and tend my sheep.” One of the things that can challenge us the most is knowing Jesus and having a deep, personal and intimate relationship with him. It is difficult for us to have a relationship with someone whom we cannot see or communicate with, someone we cannot hear. But the real question is, do we want to? Do we want to know Jesus in an intimate way and understand the truth of what he has done for us personally? Do we want to hear him share with us how he freed us from the yoke of slavery to sin and death? Do we want to experience how much he loves us? At times this relationship might feel too personal as Jesus already knows all that we have said and done; all that we have failed to say and do. That scares us. It frightens us that someone we cannot see or hear knows us better than we do. The relationship is already personal and intimate, so why not go deeper? The gift of faith tells us that Christ is always very close to us but especially when we pray, read scripture, celebrate a sacrament or gather in his name. We must learn to rely on God’s grace and trust in his love and mercy so we can place our hope in Christ, hear his voice, share our thoughts and follow his lead. It begins with a simple desire to know him who has traveled from heaven to get to know us. Who has come into our humanity to gather us and bring us home. One of the images frequently used in Scripture to help us understand the relationship between God and his children is that of the Good Shepherd. Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep, and mine know me... I myself will pasture my sheep... The lost I will seek out, the strayed I will bring back, the injured I will bind up, the sick I will heal...” When we are lost and confused, Jesus comes to look for us. When we stray away from God’s house, Jesus brings us back home. When we are injured, Jesus helps us. When we are ill, he comforts us. Let us then pray for a deep, personal and intimate knowledge of Jesus Christ who suffered and died for us so that we may hear his voice more freely, see him more clearly, encounter him more deeply, and follow him more nearly, day by day.

Mrs. Deighan asked her 7th grade Religion students to think about their relationship with Christ and the way they relate to and understand Him. With that in mind, students created an image of Jesus that demonstrated their understanding of who He is and what He means to them. They were encouraged to be creative in the construction and presentation of their projects and utilized many different mediums such as Legos, paint, clay, and 3D printing!

GAMES. Please contact Nikki Neswold, Faith

Formation Coordinator for Youth Ministry, at

We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. There are separate sessions for children or youth. You are welcome to participate in the process with your questions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. For more information please contact Deacon Pete Pronko at 407-869-9472 or [email protected].

Are you an adult who has not yet received Confirmation?

For most of us, the Sacrament of Confirmation was celebrated when we were either in junior high or in high school. For those adults in the RCIA, their Confirmation is celebrated when they are baptized at the Easter Vigil. But, for a variety of reasons, many adult Catholics have not yet been confirmed.

THIS INVITATION IS FOR YOU If you are 19 years of age, you have been baptized Catholic and have made your First Communion, but have not been confirmed, we invite you to begin a preparation program so that you will be confirmed on Sunday, January 17, 2021 at St. James Cathedral by Bishop John Noonan. St. Rose Philippine Duchesne by Fr. Steve Baumann

This week’s saint is not as well known here in the South, but more so in the Midwest and the Northeast. “No greater saint ever died in Missouri or perhaps in the whole Union,” wrote Fr. Pierre de Smet, SJ. He was speaking of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne (1769-1852), a Religious Sister of the Sacred Heart, and a pioneer missionary nun to our Mississippi Valley.

Born in Grenoble, France, she heard as a child, stories from a Jesuit missionary to the Louisiana Territory about Indians. From that point on the desire to work among them was kindled. At age 17, she sought to enter the Visitation Convent, but the outbreak of the French Revolution and the

expulsion of many Religious men and women from France prevented it. Only years later at age 33 did she realize her desire to become a nun when she entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart, founded by St. Madeline Sophie Barat.

A few years later she again became interested in the missions in North America, but it was to be several more years before she was able to lead a group of Sisters to the United States. In 1818, then 49 years old, she arrived in St. Louis, but Bishop Dubourg had no work for them among the Indians. So she and her Sisters settled in St. Louis and established a convent, a school and an orphanage for girls. She was also instrumental in founding six other convents along the Mississippi River between St. Louis and New Orleans.

Finally, at age 71 she got her wish and the opportunity to work among the Indians in Sugar Creek, Kansas. In an essay in the journal “Builders of America,” Fr. Albert J. Nevins wrote that Mother Duchesne was too old to learn the Potawatomi language, so she spoke in the “international language of kindness and love.” Since she could not teach in the native Indian language, she decided to pray for the success of her Sisters’ work. She did that for so many long hours every day that the Indians named her “the Woman Who Always Prays,” – quite a compliment!

During her last years, despite ill health, she continued to spend many hours in prayer and penitential practices. At age 83, she died on November 18, 1852 at St. Charles, Missouri. Beatified in 1940, she was canonized by Pope St. John Paul II on July 3, 1988. In his homily at her Mass of Canonization, the Holy Father said:

“Rose Philippine’s entire life was transformed and enlightened by her love for Christ in the Eucharist. During the long hours she spent before the Blessed Sacrament, she learned to live continually in the presence of God. She placed all her hopes and desires in Him…With missionary courage, this great pioneer looked to the future with the eyes of the heart, a heart that was on fire with God’s love…She took upon herself the Gospel injunction to go and teach all the nations, reminding us that the call to holiness is universal and does not know the boundaries of nations, political systems, culture or race.”

This recognition of Rose Philippine Duchesne’s sainthood should encourage all of us to continue to be of service to God and others, as our own parish mission statement reminds us, until even late in life. We never really retire from God’s work. Rather, He comes and takes us while we are doing it. Her example spurs people all over the world to go beyond their own borders and increases our devotion to prayer and contemplation, particularly in Eucharistic Adoration.
