The Solemnity of Our Lord

Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

A Bulletin Reflection by:

Deacon James Ogbonna

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of

our Lord Jesus Christ, the King of the

Universe. Today is also the last Sunday

of Ordinary Time which brings our litur-

gical year to a close. Next Sunday we

begin the season of Advent. Over the last several months, we have cele-

brated the mysteries of the life of our Lord Jesus Christ. This Sunday we

celebrate Him in his glorified state as King of all Creation, all souls, Lord

of Lords, and King of all Kings.

The Solemnity of Christ the King was established by Pope Pius the XI in

1925 in response to a world that was moving toward nationalism and

rejecting Jesus and His ways. Pope Pius thought a renewed focus on

our Lord Jesus Christ as the King of the Universe would resonate with

Christians and the public domain. Today, we also are invited to

acknowledge Christ as our King. We should gladly surrender ourselves

to His loving reign and respond to His invitation to take our place in His

kingdom.

From the very beginning of creation, the reign of Jesus Christ as our King

was assured. His Kingdom was established through the lineage of King

David and is recounted in our first reading today, the Second Book of

Samuel (2 Samuel 5:1-3.) David was crowned king by the people of Isra-

el. They wanted a sovereign like the other nations in Judea. Through

King David’s descendants, as promised by God, foretold by the prophets

and the Angel Gabriel when he hailed Mary; our Lord Jesus would sit

upon his throne, as king, ruling over an everlasting Kingdom. Christ’s

supremacy was established. We celebrate this today.

But unlike the monarchies, royalties and rulers that we see so much of in

our world today, Christ the King did not come to seek power for himself

nor glory from a human perspective but was one whose life was centered

on caring for and offering His life to others. Christ the King came to reveal

his Father’s love for us. He came to mediate for us, and to redeem us.

The King of the Universe is crowned in thorns and nailed to a wooden

cross for his throne. He sacrificed himself so that we could know ever-

lasting life. By following His lead, we can work toward a world filled with

justice, love and peace. By imitating His example, we learn how to live in

solidarity with each other for the hope of untold joy in His Kingdom. Just

as the cross was his means to exaltation, so the way of his cross is our

only way into paradise.

In our Gospel reading today from (Luke 23:35-43), we are given a brief

account of the crucifixion of Jesus. Religious leaders mocked him. The

soldiers ridiculed him. The crowd taunted him. In their attempt to de-

moralize Jesus they challenged him; if he is who he said he is, “the son of

God,” then he should save himself. They fail to recognize their Savior,

the Chosen One that performed miracles among them. They failed to

understand that Christ’s leadership and His kingship was expressed

through his humility and the sacrifice he made for humanity.

As our Savior hangs on the cross along with two thieves, the Penitent Thief

recognized Christ’s supremacy and asks Jesus to "remember him" when

Christ “comes into His kingdom.” Our Savior assured him, “Truly today you

will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43).

Today we are celebrating the true substance of the Kingdom of God, the

Reign of Christ, and Christ the King of the Universe. Like the Penitent

Thief, if we will recognize Jesus Christ as the Messiah and the Reigning

King of the Universe and accept his invitation, we will truly join Him in Para-

dise. The merciful Savior “forgives us for we know not what we do,” and

guarantees us a place in His kingdom anyway. Let us choose to be part of

His kingdom that He is offering us and ignore the powers of worldly attrac-

tions that challenge and distract us from fully embracing His invitation.

The world challenges us daily to choose the rule of other powers: money,

greed, violence, indifference, hatred, aggression, etc. As a result, accepting

Jesus’ invitation can be difficult for many of us and it needs to be renewed

each day by the deliberate moral choices we make. The King of the Uni-

verse invites us to follow him into Paradise! In humility let us accept His

invitation to paradise that we do not deserve but He offers it to us anyway!

His saving Grace can become the reality of our lives.

Our second reading today (Col. 1:12-20) tells us that Jesus is true God and

true man, the image of the invisible God. All things were created through

him and for him. Jesus is the true king of all kings. Yet He allows Himself to

be crucified so that we may have everlasting life. Let us give him an oppor-

tunity to truly reign in our lives.

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the

Universe. We also anticipate his second coming and his new kingdom.

We proclaim his glorious return when he will fill the hearts of all His faithful

with joy and wipe away our tears. However, we cannot passively sit and

wait for this moment to come; we must actively desire his Kingdom in our

hearts by our deeds and actions. After all, our King will remind us that

whatever we have done for one of the least of His brothers and sisters, we

also did for him. Our actions will speak far louder than words and will

demonstrate our eagerness to accept Christ’s invitation to join Him in His

Kingdom.

According to St Luke-(Luke 17:21), “The Kingdom of God is already within

you”. On November 12, 2014, Pope Francis assured us that “the Kingdom

of God is close to us every day”-it is hidden in the holiness of our daily life.

Life with Christ lasts forever! It is built on the foundation of God’s just and

eternal love. The moral choices we make now will determine if we have a

place at Christ’s table in his Kingdom.

Let us imitate Christ our King; our lives should be centered on worship,

selflessness, and prayer. We also must be caring, loving, and make moral

choices that will be respected by God! +

Our King comes with mercy and endless love, and this gives us confidence

to present to Him all our needs.

That the Church may proclaim, celebrate, and serve the Kingdom of Jesus

Christ to the ends of the earth and to the end of time.

For the priests serving in this Diocese, that they will persevere in the priest-

hood of Christ, the King of the Universe.

For all those called to the priesthood or consecrated life in this Diocese, that

they will seriously consider the call.

That as Christian Stewards we will embrace the mindset that my life is not

about me; it is about serving the King of Kings.

That Christ the King may lead all public servants to place the dignity of

human life at the center of all their policies, programs, and decisions.

For all who teach religious instruction, that they may impart to their students

the message of Christ, the image of the invisible God, with clarity and con-

viction.

For all those who suffer in body, mind or spirt that they may be cared for

with gentleness and patience.

For the dying and all the deceased, that Jesus may welcome them into His

Kingdom, as He welcomed the man who was crucified with Him.

Prayers for the Sick

Almighty and Everlasting God, the

eternal salvation of those who be-

lieve in You, hear us on behalf of

Your servants who are sick, for whom

we humbly beg the help of your mer-

cy, so that, being restored to health,

they may render thanks to you in

your Church. Through Christ our

Lord. Amen

Thanksgiving Report to Parishioners “Report

of Gratitude”

This Thanksgiving, as we reflect with gratitude for

the many blessings God has given us, Catholics

throughout our Diocese are invited to visit scd.org

to view the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal “Report of Gratitude.” See how, together

as Catholics, parishioners have made a real difference to our sisters and brothers

in need. This year, more than 261,000 individual and families, were helped by 17

Northern California charities that receive funds from the Appeal.

The 2019 Appeal is approaching $3.7 million in commitments so far. Our parish

receives 25% of any gift made by parishioners here. If you have not yet participat-

ed, prayerfully consider a donation. No contribution, no act of charity is ever too

small or insignificant. Envelopes are available in the parish office or donate online

at scd.org.
