These are busy times for SAME! Next week is the Exploring Engineering Academy at Georgia Tech which is put on by the Boy Scouts of America. This is a great opportunity for high school students to gain exposure to the engineering and architectural disciplines. The Atlanta Post is sponsoring the academy and also have volunteers working there throughout the week. Throughout this summer, we will be sponsoring students at the various SAME engineering and construction camps. Special thanks go to Cindy Miller, our camps committee chair, for pulling it all together. The Atlanta post was well represented at the SAME JETC in St Louis. Bob Beavers and I had the privilege of representing the post at the awards breakfast and accepting our post awards for 2011. The June luncheon will be my last as your president. On May 4th, MG Todd Semonite left South Atlantic Division for USACE Headquarters where he is now the Deputy Chief of Engineers. COL Eric Conrad is now SAD Commander. Congratulations to all!


Great Golf 2012 Wrap‐Up It was another great year for our annual golf outing! We had great weather, a great course and some fantastic networking opportunities. This was our best ever tournament…we had 23 hole sponsors (see the list at the end of this news letter), one major gift sponsor (Cox Communications), 91 golfers and many volunteers (some that were corralled on a moment’s notice). Many thanks to our major volunteer…Ms. Shannon Hyland from KEMRON…as usual; Shannon received all of the registrations and made all of the Sponsor Signs. Additional volunteers (helped with sign in, sign placement, drink carts and other general support) included: Beth Harris of Hermosa, Sherri Smith of PEG and Heather Hawkins of Wenck. Now let’s talk about the golfers. We gave away prizes to the Absolute 1st (Low Gross – they had the most amount of good “lies” on the golf course), 2nd, 3rd, and Last Place (of course...although we shouldn’t really give a gift for last place as they get the most entertainment for their money!). We also had prizes for the Longest Drive (both Men’s and Women’s) and two closest to the pin. And of course, there was quite a bounty that was given away as door prizes. Now I am sure you are wondering who the actual winners were and although I would like to tell you, it is not as important as what all of the participants did for our Post Education and Mentoring Fund. With their help we raised over $12,000 and had a great time doing it. We have booked the same course (Heritage Golf Links in Tucker) for our tournament next year and we will once again call for all of you to come out and help us support the SAME Atlanta Education and Mentoring fund with another Golf Tournament. As Greg Norman once said: “Happiness is a long walk with a Putter” and as I would like to say to all the sponsors and players: “Thanks for your generous support, sponsorship and camaraderie!” See you next year on May 7th, same time, same place. Atlanta Post Scholarships Awarded through GEF

GEF Scholarship Awardees On November 3, 2011, the Georgia Engineering Foundation (GEF) awarded 35 scholarships to Georgia engineering students. Eight scholarships were awarded to outstanding engineering students by GEF on behalf of the SAME Atlanta Post. The eight SAME scholarship winners are:

SCHOLARSHIP WINNER HIGHLIGHT OF THE MONTH: KEENAN CARTER With strong interest in nuclear engineering, Keenan Carter has already worked in this field as an intern for Enercon in Kennesaw, GA. He is currently a junior in mechanical engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Keenan has additional interests in radiological engineering, medical physics, and robotics, and after obtaining his degree, he hopes to be involved in

either consulting or research and development regarding nuclear technology. Other interests of Keenan are intramural basketball, a previous mission trip to Nicaragua, and the Filipino Student Association where he is currently serving as Vice President. Keenan is on track to graduate in May of 2013. Keenan Carter received the Society of American Military Engineer’s Atlanta Post Scholarship in the amount of $1,500.
