Welcome Welcome to the SMPTE Washington DC Section’s 2016 Bits By The Bay annual technology conference. The rate of change in the television industry continues to increase, driven by both advancements in tech-nology and changes in the way media is created and consumed. Our goal is to give you the knowledge you need to understand the complexities of these technologies and lead your organizations through this transition.

The ongoing migration to software and IP-based in-frastructures leads this revolution and is a primary fo-cus of our conference this year. In addition we’ll look at metadata-empowered workflows, remote pro-duction technologies, testing and measurement and the latest developments in the ATSC 3.0 broadcast standard.

This year we have several case studies from industry leaders PBS, CNN and NHK that put these technolo-gies into practice and illustrate the benefits and chal-lenges of these transitions.

This year’s conference also marks the 100th anniver-sary of the founding of SMPTE. While the technology has changed considerably over the last 100 years, the need for standards that create interoperability is as important today as it was then. We hope you’ll join us as we celebrate this Centennial at our celebration toast, reception and dinner on Wednesday.

PBS - Implementing a DR facilityPhilip Schoene, PBSThe PBS Disaster Recovery, Diversity and Maintenance site (DDMS) became fully opera-tional in December of 2015. The DMMS provides for channel playout and uplink origina-tion in Nebraska for disaster recover, maintenance needs, and Ku-band uplink origination during NOC rain fade events. Hybrid cloud workflows & implementations Greg Holick, QuantumAs content increases, storage costs decrease, and network costs remain relatively flat, workflows can be challenging when using cloud. This presentation will talk about what types of clouds there are, what the clouds are used for and what M&E is using in the cloud workflows today. It will highlight typical M&E workflows and when to use cloud and storage for real-time vs non real-time workflows. We will talk about Private cloud/Object Storage and why it is a good fit for M&E and how it can be tied into a hybrid solution to provide a seamless workflow by putting the right data on the right platform at the right time for the right applications to work on that data. Scal-ing NAS for all these workflows can also be a challenge so we will cover why object can be a good fit when dealing with large amounts of data. We will solidify this with a customer example. Many applications are now embracing the cloud and it is important to understand when to use these applications on public, private or even hybrid cloud workflows.

NASA TV 4K channel Scott Woods and Joel Marsden, HarmonicNASA TV in partnership with Harmonic have launched the first UHD TV channel in the Americas via satellite. The content will be live launches, current ISS and remastered historic missions. Presently available only via satellite, Harmonic is currently working with pay TV providers to expand coverage and broadcast the channel via cable, satel-lite and optical networks. The channel will also be aavilable streamed over the web.
