For many, the past year had more than its share of pain and loss. There were illnesses, deaths, financial hardships, broken relationships, depression and unhappiness. Who wouldn’t want to begin again, with renewed hope and optimism? Even folks who will remember 2011 for happy times, such as marriages, births, healings and miracles, may also relish the idea of a chance to break some less than ideal habits, like smoking or over- eating. Some will simply approach their lives with renewed expectations of success, and others will make lists of New Year’s resolutions and make promises of fealty to their intentions. The great theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, writing in the first half of the twentieth century, took a dim view of such attempts: “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” This saying, which is found in a broad variety of lands, does not arise from the brash worldly-wisdom of an incorrigible. It instead reveals deep Christian insight. At the beginning of a new year, many people have nothing better to do than to make a list of bad deeds and resolve from now on—how many such “from-now-ons” have there already been? –to begin with better intentions, but they are still stuck in the middle of their paganism. They believe that a good intention already means a new beginning; they believe that on their own they can make a new start whenever they want. But that is an evil illusion; only God can make a new beginning with people whenever God pleases, but not people with God. Therefore, people cannot make a new beginning at all; they can only pray for one. Where people are on their own and live by their own devices, there is only the old, the past. Only where God is can there be a new beginning. We cannot command God to grant it; we can only pray to God for it. And we can pray only when we realize that we cannot do anything, that we have reached our limit, that someone else must make the new beginning. (Dietrich Bonhoeffer, God Is in the Manger, Louisville: Westminster John Knox Press, 2010, p. 80) It’s true that experience teaches us that resolutions seldom last. Maybe that’s because we haven’t brought God into it. This year, in whatever manner we make our fresh start, let’s resolve to put God first in our resolutions. There’s still no guarantee we’re going to drop those ten pounds, because praying to God for success isn’t the same as rubbing a genie’s lamp. But if we don’t involve God in our new year, there is zero chance of success, for one can do nothing apart from God.(John 15:5), and in him all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). And we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:3)! “So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation. Everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!” (2 Corinthians 5:17) May all your new beginnings begin with God in Christ. Happy New Year! Grace and peace, Martin

A VIEW FROM A PEWBy Don De Vries

Some years ago, I had accepted a job running a smallmanufacturing company in Long Island City, Queens. The plantwas in a less than dreamy neighborhood. The company pickedup expenses for my living in a hotel, and to fly home and back

on weekends. For many weeks I had a lot of hours to spend in theplant, which gave me opportunity to get acquainted with people on the three operating shifts. There was a family-run restaurant across the street where I often ate, and where I got to meetpeople from the neighborhood. A key feature of the place was a pool table where I could playwith some of the locals and be a citizen rather than a company boss. Many of those who cameinto the place were bakery truck drivers who worked nearby and who had originated in PuertoRico. We found a mutual interest in baseball and in the pool table, and I enjoyed their company.

Ten cent beers were a specialty of the restaurant, and losers at the pool table were expected tobuy a round for their opponents. The beer came in very small glasses, so it was hard to drinktoo much, and the place was usually very orderly. The drivers were family men, and goodfriends as well as co-workers. Spending time with them was preferable to watching TV in a hotelroom, and I could talk with them about things like union affairs, and learn something. I grew tolike these men.

One night I had stayed at the plant longer than usual, and it was around eight-thirty PM when Isat down to my supper. The pool table was busy as usual, and I saw four men whom I knewplaying their game. Suddenly I heard some loud yelling, and turned my head to see two of themfacing each other with knives in their hands. I quickly moved to the pool table and told them toput away their knives. Neither moved. So I picked up a pool cue and told them again to put theirknives away. When nothing happened, I hit one of them on the wrist with the pool cue handle, which sent the knife to the floor and that man to a chair holding his wrist. The other one still heldhis knife, so I hit his wrist also with the same result. By then the bartender had come in, and hepicked up the knives. One man left, and we made the other wait ten minutes before he couldleave so that they wouldn’t renew their argument outside. I finished my meal, and went to mycar looking over my shoulder all the time... Safely inside the car and on the way to the hotel, Iprayed that this would be all there was to the story. It wasn’t.

Next day I decided to eat at that place after work as usual. As I sat down at the counter, thetwo men I had struck got up from a table and sat next to me, one on each side. I saw that bothhad bandaged wrists, and figured here was real trouble Instead, they thanked me for preventingthem from doing something really stupid. They were friends, and just had too much beer. Iapologized for hitting them. We ate together, and went on associating in that restaurant. Therewas never another problem. In fact they later started calling me the Marshal of Long Island City.

I learned a large lesson from this experience. Evil has to be confronted whenever it appears.Pray for strength to confront evil, and by God’s grace, you will defeat it. . .

Happy New Year, Everyone! What a wonderful Advent and ChristmasSeason we’ve had. This year the weather has cooperated completely withour Advent/Christmas plans.

Jeff Davis (JDSavageProductions) directed and produced “Gilead Kids” and“Gilead Christmas” with the wonderful help of Gina Davis and Margo Mueller.

With his camera, Jeff followed & recorded our journey thru Advent and Christmas both withinour Church and out in our community. The programs were aired the whole week beforeChristmas and then viewed again on the Big Screen at the Carmel Cinema on New Years’ Eve.A very big THANK YOU to you all for making this happen.

A very enthusiastic group of Carolers (about 30 in all) sang for The Cassidys, The Almonds, theResidents at “The Plaza at Clover Lake” and for/with Bruce Baxter, at Watermelon HillResidence. We have received lovely “Thank You” notes and even a poem written by a CloverLake Resident:

“Thank you for coming to the Plaza today,We loved your singing in every way,The songs you chose were right for the season,Our hearts were warmed and you are the reason.”

Our group ended the evening with hot chocolate and pizza at my house, where we sang forJenny Temple, who was thrilled and joined in with the singing.

Another big THANK YOU goes to all of you who so willingly supported our extra rehearsals andWorship Services during the Advent Season. It was wonderful working with so many talentedmusicians. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and everyhill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be madeplain, and the crooked places will be made straight; "and the glory ofthe Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together."

This is our hope, and this is the faith that I go back to the South with.

With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With thisfaith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony ofbrotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggletogether, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free oneday.

And this will be the day -- this will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing withnew meaning:

My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing.

Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim's pride,

From every mountainside, let freedom ring!

And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.

And so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.

Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York.

Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania.

Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado.

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California.

But not only that:

Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee.

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi.

From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every villageand every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when allof God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, willbe able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual:

Free at last! Free at last!

Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!

Outreach and Mission

Gilead Food Pantry

The food pantry needs your help! They are running low on mostitems, especially: jelly, canned fruit, beans, paper towels, napkins,

and toilet paper.

Cash donations are appreciated, too, as shopping has to be done on an almost weekly basis forchicken, and other items listed above. You can make a check payable to Gilead with a notation that itis for the food pantry.

For more information on this important ministry, please see Marj Williams for more information.

While the goods received during the Kid’s Kitchen Collections have been a great help to thefood pantry, please remember that other things continue to be needed, so please continue tobring other items on non-communion Sundays. Thanks!

Adopt-A-Family

Gilead partook in an Adopt-a-Family program for the 2011 Christmasseason. The Gilead congregation adopted a family through theWomen’s Resource Center of Mahopac. The Women’s ResourceCenter delivers high quality services and programs to victims ofintimate partner violence and sexual assault throughout the year. Thecenter also provides information, emergency shelter, counseling andeducational services to nearly 3000 women, children and menannually.

Our adopted family was comprised of a mother and her two children. The Women’s Center wasoverwhelmed by Gilead’s response and thanked the congregation by writing to

"Everyone at Gilead Church, Thank you so much for your participation in this program! Yourgenerosity was incredible! You made this a very special holiday for your adopted family."

Our family’s list of needs and wants were not only met, but surpassed. We were able to make ourfamily’s Christmas more joyful thanks to the outreach of our congregation.

Thank you so very much Gilead for putting our faith in action!

Disaster Relief

The effects of last year’s storms continue to affect manystates; severe storms and tornadoes caused widespreaddamage and destruction. As we pray for all who have been

affected by these events, we remember that “Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heavenand earth” (Psalm 124:8) and call on the saving power of the Lord Jesus Christ, whom “even thewinds and sea obey” (Matthew 8:27).

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance continues to be at work in at least 17 presbyteries..

Groundswellsby Rob LoAlbo

Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of theLord, but also in the sight of men. – 2Corinthians 8.21

Welcome back to our new monthly column where Shingle readerswill read about Session’s activities.

Remember: a groundswell is not only “a broad, deep, swell or rolling of the sea, due to a distantstorm or gale” but also “any surge of support, approval, or enthusiasm, especially among thegeneral public.” Below are this month’s coming tides and outgoing supports.

Session met on Tuesday, December 13th at 7:30 PM. The meeting began with our usual scripturereading and prayer, as chosen by the pastor, which set the tone for the meeting. This month’smeeting began with a reading from Revelation 3.20:

Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open thedoor, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me.

After a prayer, Session then discussed the following:

In November, there were 20 pastoral care visits and 34 pastoral phone conversations, onefuneral, with our pastor attending one ecumenical meeting and five Presbytery functions.

Jennifer Parsons Robinson was welcomed into Gilead as a new member on November 13th.Her infant son Kiernan Parsons Robinson was baptized during the same service.

Gilead served communion on December 4, 2011.

Session is looking at renovating some aspects of the kitchen, which would include one side ofcabinetry, a new dishwasher, stove, and sink.

Carolyn Lewis approached Session, stating how she has been moved to join our church througha reaffirmation of faith.

The idea of staff evaluation for paid staff is being entertained for the purposes of feedback.

Session approved the generous offer from the local Salvation Army to feed those who utilize thefood pantry every Friday morning from 10-11:30 AM.

Members of Session who handle the church’s financial ledgers and weekly offerings haveexpressed a need and interest in purchasing a safe for the office; therefore, we currently areshopping for one.

The allocation of the Christmas offering was decided to be split between the Church’s generalfund and expenses (40%), capital improvement (20%), the food pantry (20%) and Habitat forHumanity (20%). Additionally, our budgeted outreach total for the year would go towards theWomen’s Resource Center.

Thanks for following our activities. If you have any questions, feel free to approach a Sessionmember for further discussion.

Please check back next month to see what else is happening in our church!

The CNS Pre-K Program is Gilead's nonsectarian schoolfor 2 1/2 to 5 year olds. Since it was founded in 1949, thePre-School has been a respected community resource forearly childhood education. Our staff consists of threeteachers and an aide with many years of experience at CNSbetween them. All are active members of the communityand volunteers in the school district.

The school offers two, three and five day programs. Theyfollow the same calendar as the Carmel Central Schooldistrict.

In preparing a child for Kindergarten, their philosophy is teaching the whole child to grow. Theyprovide a daily routine balanced between academic skills and lessons, crafts, free and structured playtime, music, story time, computer time, snack, and outdoor activities on the large playground.

The curriculum was developed in conjunction with the area kindergarten teachers to best prepare thechild for kindergarten and instill an enthusiasm for learning in a fun loving environment. Utilizing theteam teaching method, three teachers give a student to teacher ratio of approximately 8 to 1.

For children scheduled to enter public school in September of the year, we routinely prepare adetailed evaluation of Kindergarten readiness.
