Welcome to our Parish Eucharist on this

Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity

Until Friday 10th September our current restrictions will remain in

place for the safety of all concerned. However congregational singing has resumed and therefore face

coverings are optional although advised when not singing

Communion continues to be administered in one kind that is, just receiving the consecrated bread. The Sacrament will be brought to you in your place. Please stand or kneel to receive Holy Communion. Fr Paul will have sanitized his hands several times and will be wearing a face covering while administering communion. He will place the consecrated host directly into your hands but not onto your tongue, as is the traditional practice of some. There is no collection during the service you are asked to leave your offerings for today and those that you may have stored up over past weeks, into the plate as you arrive or leave the church.

Karl Boberg (1859-1940 trans. Stuart K. Hine (1899-1989

1 Oh Lord My God, when I In awesome wonder, consider all the works thy hand has made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, thy pow’r throughout the universe displayed. Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee, how great thou art! how great thou art! then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee, how great thou art! how great thou art!

2 When through the woods, and forest glades I wander, and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees. when I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur and hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze. Refrain

3 And when I think that God, his Son not sparing; sent him to die, I scarce can take it in; that on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, he bled and died to take away my sin. Refrain

4 When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation, and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart. when I shall bow, in humble adoration, and then proclaim, my God, how great thou art Refrain

In the name of the Father, and

of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Greeting

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. Fr Paul introduces the service

The Prayers of Penitence

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.

The Absolution

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon us, pardon and deliver us from all our sins, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and keep us in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Gloria Glory to God in the Highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, Heavenly King, Almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy one, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the most high, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the Glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect for the Day

Almighty God, who called your Church to bear witness that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself: help us to proclaim the good news of your love, that all who hear it may be drawn to you; through him who was lifted up on the cross, and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The First Reading: Deuteronomy 4. 1-2. 6-9

Moses spoke to the people; he said: So now, Israel, give heed to the statutes and ordinances that I am teaching you to observe, so that you may live to enter and occupy the land that the LORD, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. You must neither add anything to what I command you nor take away anything from it but keep the commandments of the LORD your God with which I am charging you. You must observe them diligently, for this will show your wisdom and discernment to the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and discerning people!’ For what other great nation has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is whenever we call to him? And what other great nation has statutes and ordinances as just as this entire law that I am setting before you today?

But take care and watch yourselves closely, so as neither to forget the things that your eyes have seen nor to let them slip from your mind all the days of your life; make them known to your children and your children’s children—

This is the word of the Lord Thanks be to God Please stand

The Gradual Hymn: O&N 115 (Michael Foster (b 1946)

1 Come, faithful pilgrims all, give God the glory. let all who hear his call tell out his story: how he set Israel free from Egypt’s slavery, and called them out to be a pilgrim people.

Page 7: THE PARISH CHURCH OF

7

2 Out on the desert way, in all its starkness, faith led them through the day, and lit their darkness. No written guarantee, no easy certainty, just God’s great call to be A pilgrim people. 3 Let all the world rejoice in exsultation let every silent voice sing of salvation. Loose all the chains we that bind, set free both heart and mind, and make all humankind a pilgrim people.

The Gospel Reading: Mark 7: 1-8, 14-15. 21-23

The Lord be with you And also with you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark Glory to you, O Lord.

When the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, ‘Why do your disciples not live according

Page 8: THE PARISH CHURCH OF

8

to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?’ He said to them, ‘Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written, “This people honours me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.” You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.’

Then he called the crowd again and said to them, ‘Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.’ For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ Please sit

The Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from

the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the

Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

5 When a stranger's not alone,

where the homeless find a home, praise the love that Christ revealed, living, working, in our world.
