der a custodian; for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is nei-ther slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise. I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no better than a slave, though he is the owner of all the estate; but he is under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. So with us; when we were children, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe. But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

Gospel Reading The Reading is from

    Matthew 14:14-22

A t that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When

it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for them-selves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied.

And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

Today We Commemorate Paraskeve the Righteous Martyr of Rome

S aint Paraskeve, who was from a certain vil-lage near Rome, was born to pious parents, Agatho and Politia. Since she was born on a

Friday (in Greek, Paraskeve), she was given this name, which means "preparation" or "preparedness" (compare Matt. 27:62, Mark 15:42, Luke 23:54, and John 19:31, where 'Friday' is called "the day of the preparation"). From childhood she was instructed in the sacred letters and devot-ed herself to the study of the divine Scriptures, while leading a monastic life and guiding many to the Faith of Christ. During the reign of the Emperor Antoninus Pius, she was apprehended because she was a Chris-tian and was urged to worship the idols, but she answered with the words of Jeremias: "Let the gods that have not made heaven and the earth perish from off the earth" (Jer. 10:11). Because of this she endured exceedingly painful torments, and was be-headed in the year 140. The faithful pray to her for

    the healing of eye ailments.

Question of the Week What did the townsfolk of Gerasenes ask of Jesus after he cast the legion of demons out of the possessed man into the herd of pigs? 1) they asked Jesus to heal their sick 2) they asked Jesus to leave their town 3) they asked Jesus to perform more mira-cles 4) they asked Jesus to feed them

Something to Think About The Idle Angel

S t. Peter was giving a newly arrived soul a tour of heaven. The two of them were walking side by side in-

side a large workroom filled with angels.

St. Peter stopped in front of the first sec-tion and said, "This is the Receiving Sec-tion. Here, all the petitions sent to God in prayer are received."

The soul saw that the section was a very busy one with so many angels sorting out petitions written on voluminous sheets of paper from all the people of the world.

They resumed walking until they reached

the second section. St. Peter told the soul, "This is the Packaging and Delivery Sec-tion. Here, the graces and blessings are

packed and delivered to the petitioners down on earth."

The soul saw how busy it was. There

were a great many angels working in that room because countless blessings were being packed and delivered to earth.

Finally, at the farthest corner of the room,

they stopped at the last section. To the sur-prise of the soul, only one angel was there and he was idle.

"This is the Acknowledging Section," St.

Peter told the soul. "How is it that no work is being done

here?" "That's the sad thing," St. Peter an-

swered. "After people on earth received the bless-

ings they asked for, very few of them bother to send their acknowledgments."

    "How does one acknowledge God's

blessing?" "Simple," St. Peter answered. "Just say, 'Thank you, Lord.'"

Answer to this weeks question: 2) they asked Jesus to leave their town is the correct answer See: Mark 5:17

Something to Laugh About Dear Pastor

Dear Pastor, My father should be a minister. Every day he gives us a sermon about some-thing. Robert, Age 11, Anderson. Dear Pastor, I'm sorry I can't leave more money in the plate, but my father didn't give me a raise in my allowance. Could you have a sermon about a raise in my allowance? Love, Patty. Age 10, New Haven Dear Pastor, I think a lot more people would come to your church if you moved it to Disney-land. Loreen. Age 9. Tacoma Dear Pastor, Please say a prayer for our Little League team. We need God's help or a new pitcher. Thank you. Alexander. Age 10, Raleigh Dear Pastor, My father says I should learn the Ten Commandments. But I don't think I want to because we have enough rules already in my house. Joshua. Age 10, South Pasadena Dear Pastor, I liked your sermon on Sunday. Especially when it was finished. Ralph, Age 11, Akron
