The Opel Range

contents“Why not use rockets to drive cars and aircraft?” the engineer Dr Fritz von Opel asked himself in March 1928.

Only two months later, the idea had become reality. On 23 May 1928, Fritz von Opel catapulted himself to a speed of more than 230 km/h in front of 2 000 invited guests on the Berlin Avus “Autobahn” in the RAK 2 rocket-propelled car.

Such courage made him into what we today call a “media star” overnight and helped to make sure that Opel was regarded as one of Germany’s most modern carmakers. And why did he do it? In his own words: “Wir leben Autos” – We live cars.

Back in 1862 Adam Opel had a vision of creating a brand that would question the norm in its quest for ingenuity. And so the Opel brand was born.

From humble beginnings of starting out in a small workshop in Rüsselsheim, Germany, manufacturing sewing machines and bicycles, Opel had steadily grown from strength to strength since shifting its focus solely to cars. This was done for one reason only – “Wir leben Autos” – and by living automobiles for more than the next half-century, Opel became Germany’s largest car manufacturer by 1913.

Opel continued this upward trend with its partnership with General Motors back in 1929 and by 1936 boasted an annual production of 120 923 vehicles, making Opel the largest automobile manufacturer in Europe.

In setting another industry standard, Opel then became the first automobile manufacturer to offer a complete range of models equipped with catalytic converters.

To this day, through a combination of timeless, classic body styles and rugged, durable mechanical design, Opel continues to offer a range of products that caters to the love all kinds of people in South Africa have for the automobile.

5Our Love of Automobiles

“Wir leben Autos” – We live cars – is the living expression of Opel’s longstanding core values. It not only refers to our German roots and the passion we share for German engineering, it also expresses the intensity that influences everything we do.

The “Wir” is all about our enthusiasm and strong, positive “can do” attitude that enables everyone at Opel, from our engineers to our dealers, to develop innovative, exciting and well backed and maintained automobiles for you, our customer.

However, we do not only build cars. We live for cars and the word “leben” expresses our high level of energy, which can be felt by everyone whose life is touched by an Opel. You will feel it in the wealth of purposeful Opel features,

insightful innovations or simply through the appealing, contemporary design of all Opel automobiles.

Last, but not least, we believe that in the future “Autos” will mean so much more to you than just transportation. Opel cars are not just about driving, but an essential and exciting part of everyday life.

“Wir leben Autos” is our passion, our involvement, our attention to detail, our responsibility, our intention and – yes – our confidence in our automobiles so that you, the person who drives them, loves them as much as we do.

That is who we are.Opel. Wir leben Autos.

6 What makes an Opel?

Opel is made of dreams. But some dreams can actually come true. Yes, Opel is the epitome of precision German engineering, but it is also German engineering that has been designed to be accessible and attainable. It is part of our passion to make our cars an essential and exciting part of everyday life for everybody.

Another passion of ours is innovation. The exterior of all the cars in the Opel range certainly makes a bold design statement, but the true genius lies beneath. The ECOTEC engines offer high-revving excitement and driver

appeal, yet are very eco-friendly and deliver a highly competitive fuel consumption – making them as green as they look mean. Plus, the easy-shifting 5-speed transmission – or 6-speed in the turbo versions – makes Opel as pleasurable to drive as it is exciting.

A number of models also offer traction control, cornering brake control, cornering torque control, Watt’s Link rear suspension and Electronic Stability Programme – just some of the innovations that make driving an Opel such an absolute delight.

7The Definition of Opel

What defines Opel? An Opel is a juxtaposition of many parts. It is German precision in terms of engineering, yet also sculpturally artistic in terms of appearance. It is extremely versatile and is specifically designed for everyday life, yet offers a level of driving excitement normally associated with a

weekend car. Opel vehicles are high-performance – through continuous innovation, our engines are also extremely efficient and increasingly eco-friendly. That is Opel – automobiles of many parts that come together to create an inspiring whole.

8 OPC – Opel Performance Centre

Opel Performance Centre (OPC) vehicles sport a unique design language with typical layout and equipment elements. Distinctive features include front spoilers with prominent air inlets and fog lamps, large exclusively designed alloy wheels, bold moulded side sills, blue brake calipers, rear bumper aprons and spoilers. The OPC detailing is carried right through to the interior; from the race-inspired bucket seats, the leather gear lever, right through to the leather-bound steering wheel and unique instrument cluster, to mention but a few.

More than just an abbreviation, OPC spells distinction, state-of-the-art technology, exhilarating design and top-class performance. On top of offering the expected Opel functionality and convenience, OPC models emphasise the brand’s sporty potential and technological expertise with products that both evoke emotion and set the standard in driving dynamics.

Synonymous with motor sport and legendary car races, the Nürburgring, in Germany, is also the test ground for Opel’s OPC vehicles. As best performers in their individual model ranges, it is imperative for them to continually prove their status at the top of their variant classes, which explains Opel’s presence during the entire test season.

Shift into top gear with the Corsa OPC. The sporty lines, roof spoiler and powerful front and rear aprons with distinctive gills give the OPC a unique flair. It also boasts eye-catching 18-inch alloy wheels and daytime running lights. The striking design is carried through into the interior, which features sports seats with integrated head restraints.

A joint development by Opel and Recaro, the OPC’s performance reflects the experience of Opel’s dedicated test facility at the Nürburgring. Top-level agility and vehicle control ensure a pure Corsa driving thrill. Its 1.6 litre Turbo engine with 141kW accelerates the compact three-door from 0 to 100km/h in 7.2 seconds and enables a top speed of 225km/h. A maximum torque of 230Nm is delivered to the front wheels by the standard six-speed transmission. In addition, the standard overboost system is able to temporarily increase torque by around 15%, providing a corresponding dynamics increase. OPC says it all: Opel Performance Cars.

The Corsa is zippy, economical and ready to party whenever you are. Its sexy design is sure to draw attention, with a mesh front grill and chrome accents. It also sports daytime running and fog lights, as well as a neat and comfortable interior. The 1.4 engine packs a punch, but is also fuel efficient and low on emissions. The new Enjoy 1.4 Turbo lives up to the Opel tradition of performance excellence, with fuel-efficiency and style. Super cool and eco-friendly, the Corsa range is ready to put the fun back into driving.

Who says practical cannot be stylish? Whether in panel van or mini-bus specification, the Vivaro is one of the most popular vehicles in its class segment. It is also arguably the most stylish. But do not be fooled by its good looks. Under the skin the Vivaro is a true workhorse. It offers wide opening double rear doors, plus both left and right sliding doors that open to one of the widest loading areas in its class. Combine this with the very low loading height, and pallets, cartons, crates and bulky merchandise can simply be slid into place – and kept there. In mini-bus specification, people can get in and out just as easily. Another innovative feature is Opel’s Flex-Fix system that straps cargo to the side panels in a variety of different positions, allowing for safe transportation of any goods. Up-front the occupants are just as safe with Opel’s extensive safety package, including a restraint system with airbag (one in panel van specification, two in mini-bus), safety steering column, anti-submarining ramps in the seats and retractor seat belts. Furthermore, in the event of a collision the fuel supply is immediately cut off and the fuel tank is also located in the impact protection zone. The Vivaro 2.0 Petrol or 1.9 CDTI panel van or 1.9 CDTI mini-bus – like all Opels – delivers brisk performance and – like all Opels – low fuel consumption.
