2018 MPOA Annual Meeting The Annual Meeting of the Moorings of Vero Property Owners’ Association was held in the Commodore’s Room of the Moorings Yacht and Country Club on February 12, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. Clint Black, President of the Association, called the meeting to order and wel-comed Association members. 306 prox-ies were voted, constituting a Quorum. The Minutes of the February 6, 2017 Annual Meeting were unanimously ap-proved. Treasurer, Shelley Weier, reported that 2017 total expenses were $287,128, a 1% decrease compared to 2016 total expenses. Expenses for Landscaping, Irrigation, Repairs, Utilities, Tree Service, and Roads and Signs accounted for 84% of the total 2017 expenses. The Associa-tion’s 2018 Annual Operating Budget, which contains a 4.4% decrease in total revenues and a 1.2% increase in total expenses compared to 2017, was unani-mously approved with a total vote of 306. Six nominees were elected to three- year terms on the Association’s Board of

Governors: Chris Sinton, Alex McFer-ran, Ann Evans, Steve Smith, Tica Young and Ray Buza. President, Clint Black, thanked retiring Board members Ann Hill, George Bryant, Ardi Schnei-der, and Bill Schreiber for their many years of service on the Board and pre-sented each of them with a gift as a token of the Association’s apprecia-tion. Following Committee reports for the

Beach Property and Landscaping,

Guest Speaker, Dr. Richard H. Baker,

Ph.D, President of the Pelican Island

Audubon Society, gave a slide presen-

tation on “The Protection and Im-

provement of the Indian River Lagoon

and Environment.” Scientific tests

show that the waterways of the Moor-

ings are seriously polluting the Indian

River Lagoon with dangerously high

concentrations of nitrogen, most likely

due to the injudicious use of landscape

fertilizers. Dr. Baker recommended

planting Florida native plants that re-

quire less irrigation and little or no fer-

President’s Message by Clint Black

Believe it or not, the end of the season is upon us. It’s been a busy few months. The weather (mostly) cooperated in our de-lightful “winter paradise” experi-ence. The Tiki Hut party was aston-ishingly well-attended. There was almost no room on the dance floor! Many thanks to The Moor-ings’ Yacht and Country Club for the loan of the generator to pow-er the very popular steel drum band! The music adds a lot. Don’t miss the April 23rd Tiki Party get-together. Count on more good times. As a

large group of communities, it is so gratifying to be able to share our lovely Vero Beach space, congenial company and our many blessings. Oh, hope you had a Happy Easter, too. See you all at the Tiki Huts!

The Moorings’ Breeze

The 2018 Annual Meeting of Presidents of all Moorings Associations was held on March 5 at The Moorings Yacht and County Club. Bob Solari, the Vice Chairman of our Indian River County Commis-sion, addressed the group and discussed the follow-ing issues:

All Aboard Florida: Bob noted that in 2014, people were saying the All Aboard Florida project was a done deal. It is now 2018 and it is not even close to being a done deal. We will keep up the fight!

Indian River Lagoon: Bob discussed the County’s continuing efforts to return the lagoon to health. Included in the County’s projects are the Spoonbill, Egret, and Osprey Marshes, all of which continue to remove nutrients from waters which would other-wise be polluting the lagoon.

Constitution Revision Commission: He also men-tioned that he is one of the 37 members currently sitting on the CRC. The Commission will be meeting in March and April to decide what proposals will be on the ballot in November, 2018.

County Financial Health: The County continues to be well run. Its financial health remains one of the best in the state.

For further information, please call the Commis-sioner’s office 772-226-1440 or 772-226-1438.

On Friday, January 19, the MPOA, in conjunction with The Moor-ings Yacht & Country Club, invited all residents to attend a presenta-tion and Q & A with Eric Flowers, M.S. of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. Major Flowers is part of the Bureau of Administra-tion. There were well over 200 residents in attendance at this event. Major Flowers focused on several pieces of information helpful to all. He suggested that everyone visit the sheriff department’s web-site at www.IRCsheriff.org for news and information and to register for the Housewatch Program to protect unoccupied hous-es. Contact www.ic3.gov to report credit card, tax or other scams. Install inexpensive security systems such as Ring, a doorbell camera, or a Live View security camera. Keep garage doors closed at all times and report suspicious activity to 911. An Indian River County Sheriff's patrol car is assigned to South Beach 24/7/365.

Learn Your Lizards

Please be nice to your neighbors and remember to pick up your pet's waste from all streets, sidewalks and lawns, and dispose of it properly at your home.

Spring is coming and the brown anole (rhymes with cannoli) lizards (not geckos) will be returning. The

dynamic males with their pushups, head bobbing, and dewlap display (red throat fan) will be staking their

territory and looking for females. The anole’s “tail autonomy” is a defense mechanism which allows it to

break off its tail when seized or threatened by a predator. The ejected tail twitches around, distracting the attacker, while the cunning lizard escapes. Research courtesy of

Author, Ardi Schneider. ❖

DANGER Even if cars and trucks did not speed and park on Mooringline Drive (and other Moorings roads), walkers and bikers are TRU-LY at risk when not obeying the basic “rules of the road”:

• Walk AGAINST traffic (facing traffic)

• Bike WITH traffic (same direction). Helmets are required for

all under the age of 16 when riding on the sidewalk, roadway,

or other public property.

• ALWAYS Stay on the RIGHT side of

whatever road you are using.

Directory Phone Number Corrections

The mid-season sales numbers for The Moorings con-tinue to show a strong marketplace with a total of 26 properties currently under contract and sold/closed from January 1 to March 13; and 30 condominiums and 17 sin-gle family homes currently on the market. A strong round of closings coming up in April and an anticipated busy remainder of season through the end of March, should reflect a more complete marketplace picture by the end of the year. Of note, average sold pricing on both condo-minium and single family homes sales shows a continuing increase in volume, albeit at a slower pace than seen in previous years.

On Saturday, January 27th, thanks to Debbie Lemming’s unending ener-gy and enthusiasm for all things land-scaping, we met once again at her home. Debbie had arranged for a guest speaker, Joe Montallo, the Landscape Architect for Southwinds. Afterward, the group walked the property and Joe personally de-scribed the substantial changes he has been making, most recently south of the front entrance alongside Highway A1A. Thanks to the indomitable Judi Honiss and the generosity of The Pointes’ Board of Directors, the Moorings now has a revolutionary, transformative and beautiful land-scape that incorporates the scientific principles of lagoon-friendly planting and maintenance. At the March 17, 2018 meeting of the Landscape Share Committee, representatives from our Moorings’ communities followed Judi through-out The Pointes to learn what intelli-gent and sensitive design can

It has just been announced that, thanks to the co-founder of Land-scape Share, Ardi Schneider, our final meeting for this season will be on Friday, April 13th at 10 am at the Audubon House. All members of the MPOA who are interested are invit-ed to attend. The presenter will be Tim Harrison, the owner of Native Butterfly Flowers LLC. We will then view the native gardens on the Audubon property, along with their butterfly and rain gardens. Those with an interest in native plants will find this meeting enlightening and educational.
