The Mission of Physical Education in Florida

Is to provide students with the opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge, motivation and behaviors that lead to the adoption of a physically active lifestyle

The 6-8 Physical Education program is based upon the following:

Assessment, improvement and maintenance of health-related fitness

Opportunities for development of competency in many movement forms

Opportunities for use of technology to enhance health-related fitness and the acquisition of skills and knowledge in a variety of physical activities

Participation regularly in health-enhancing physical activity outside the physical education class

Senate Bill 610

• Beginning with 2009-2010 students in grades 6-8 will be required to receive one semester of physical education each year while enrolled in grades 6-8

• Allows any instructional personnel (designated by the principal) to teach physical education

• Allows waivers for physical education requirement for students in grades 6-8 (2009-2010); requires districts to notify parents of waiver options available prior to enrolling students in physical education

Waivers cont.1. Student is enrolled or required to enroll in a remediation course.2. Parent requests in writing that the student enroll in another course offered by the school district.3. Parents indicates in writing that the student is participating in

physical activities outside the school day equal to or in excess of the requirement.

ESCD Wellness Policy Operational Procedures

VII. Physical Activity (Points of Interest)

• Every student shall have the opportunity to participate in and benefit from the district’s Physical Education Program whose mission is to develop in students the skills, knowledge, motivation, and behaviors that promote highest student achievement and a lifelong commitment to wellness centered around a healthy and physically active lifestyle.

• The district’s Physical Education Program shall be taught by certified physical education teachers.

• Students in grades 6 through 8 shall have daily scheduled physical education for three years as prescribed in the district’s Middle School Operational Procedures for Scheduling Physical Education, the district’s Middle School Physical Education Program Appraisal Checklist: A Program Assessment and Program Improvement Planning Guide, the district’s Student Progression Plan, and by the district’s current middle school physical education staffing allocation formula.

Middle School Pupil Progression Plan

The district’s Wellness Policy states that students in grades 6-8 shall have daily scheduled physical education for three years, and *One year of band (concert, symphonic, strings or jazz

ensemble) or chorus may be substituted for one year of physical education in any grade 6-8, subject to principal’sapproval.

6th Grade• Fitness/Wellness• Educational Gymnastics/Educational Dance

7th Grade• Team Sports• Outdoor Pursuits/Aquatics

8th Grade• Individual/Dual Sports• Alternative/Extreme Sports

12 week courses / 18 weeks in a semester

Fitness/WellnessActivities in this course may include, but are not limited to the following:

Health-related fitness components, fitness/wellness concepts, nutrition, goal setting, spinning, stability balls, Pilates, steps, aerobics, circuit training, weight training, resistance bands, jump ropes, walking, wellness center equipment

Educational Dance/GymnasticsActivities in this course may include, but are not limited to the following:

Educational Dance – folk, square, line, hip hop, jazz, cultural, modern, creative, dance sequences, etc.

Educational Gymnastics – rolling, tumbling, transfer of weight, flight, balance, shapes, gymnastics sequences, etc.

Team SportsActivities in this course may include, but are not limited to the following:

Basketball, volleyball, flag football, soccer, softball, team handball, hockey, speedball, Lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, gatorball, flickerball, water polo, crickett, etc.

Outdoor Pursuits

Activities in this course may include, but are not limited to the following:

Archery, hiking, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, boater safety, orienteering, Project Adventure activities, biking, camping, survival skills, swimming, water safety, basic water rescue skills, rope courses, backpacking, etc.

Individual and Dual

Activities in this course may include, but are not limited to the following:

Track and field, bowling, golf, tennis, badminton, table tennis, handball, paddleball, racquetball, wrestling, skiing, horseshoes, fencing, disc golf, pickleball, squash, etc.

Extreme Sports

Activities in this course may include, but are not limited to the following:

Inline Skating, skate boarding, repelling, self-defense, martial arts, water skiing, wake boarding, rock climbing, scuba/snorkeling, fencing, disc golf, interactive gaming, ice skating, cycling, surfing, croquet, etc.

Conducive to a semester course format that aligns with SB 610

More of a variety offered which will hopefully lead to more students wanting to be enrolled in Physical Education

Exposes students to a larger number of sports and activities that can be done outside of school
