Rector’s Corner KEEPING FAITH Sometimes, when I feel that the world has become very
threatening towards me, the people I love, and the
world, faith seems to be the only thing left. Faith, a dy-
namic idea in the ancient Hebrew scripture is related to
the same root of the word we use every Sunday:
“Amen (‘mn).” Faith is the affirmation that the Divine
is the destiny and fulfillment of all of human and non-
human aspirations no matter what we might fear, or
suffer, or see others fearing or suffering.
Faith is more than intellectual consent, more than trust,
more than obedience to God’s imperative to love. It is
the challenge given to us to live in the now-not-yet of
the rule of Christ. Each one of us will have a particular
approach. Mine is from James, that when I do not feel
grace and I do not feel faithful, I can at least act faithful;
I’m a Pelagian, a heretic. In the absence of the gift of
faith, I’m going to try to find a way to act faithfully.
Others have to believe completely that they have been
saved so they will be part of the saved: Or trust in God
to be rewarded with abundant life here, and eternal life
later: Or Grace is a gift leading to faith is a gift that ulti-
mately leads to justification: Or being united to the
right church will be the content of the faith that leads to
salvation: Or the mystical union of the contemplative
through prayer with the Divine.
My particular faith only serves me or others who agree
with me, not the whole gathered body. Given the many
words for the rewards of faith that I just shared
(abundant life, eternal life, salvation, justification, un-
ion), I must admit I cannot be sure what our destiny in
the Divine is, much less agree with everyone on the
ways to get there. An agnosticism about the whole of
God’s plan does not negate the faithful practice of the
particular adherent.
Regarding other religions or no religion, there is a
Christian theology of non-Christian ways God is work-
ing in the world. I would go further than that: God is
not limited to Christian revelation only, but could be
working through other faiths and even no faith to gen-
tly and lovingly direct the World toward the Divine
goal. As your pastor, I must hold open the door to
God’s grace to each and every one of us, and even fur-
ther, to the world, filled with Muslims, Hindus, Bud-
dhists, Jains, Zoroastrians, Confucians, Taoist, Utilitari-
an, Rationalists, and Atheists.
The arrogance of limiting God’s love towards any kind
of person by anyone, even by a non-Christian, always
appalls me. What hubris! Keep faith even when you
don’t feel it, especially when we feel threatened or oth-
er people, whom we love, are threatened. Practicing
faith is a very good and commendable piece of advice I
can share with you. “Faith is a kind of ‘Amen’ to God’s
initiatives of love,” says Avery Dulles, SJ. Let us do
“Amen.” It fits Lent very well.
[…] I still my soul and make it quiet,
like a child upon its mother's breast; *
my soul is quieted within me. Psalm 131:3

Page 2
2 THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
Divino.
do.
confucianos, utilitarios, racionalistas y ateos.
nas, siempre me da disgusto. ¡Qué soberbia! Manten-
Dios,” dice Avery Dulles, SJ.

Page 3
THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO 3
grandes mejoras a nuestros edificios y terrenos.
Venga y únase a
paredes pudieran hablar.

PROCESO DE DISCERNIMIENTO ¡Hola familia de St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas!
Hace unos años escuche una voz muy
fuerte de Dios animándome a buscar y
considerar el proceso de ordenamiento al
diaconado.
Page 4
4 THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO

compartir!
Meta 2: Expandir Programas Sociales

Pascua y nuestra actividad será decorar huevos.

SENIOR WARDEN’S MESSAGE It’s March already. Spring is just around the corner. It
is a time of new beginnings, not only in nature but for
your new Vestry. We are starting the hard work of
forming as a strong leadership team. Many thanks to
all who put themselves out there to run for the Vestry
and delegates. It is not easy to take that leap. We have
a good team and I am looking forward to working
with everyone this year.
We have been studying the “Vestry Resource Guide”.
It has valuable information and tools for the Vestry to
use throughout the year. One of the pieces of infor-
mation in it states that the Vestry should reflect the
congregation. I am so happy that this year we have
better representation from our 1:00 pm service so we
better reflect St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas.
One of the things that I was remiss in doing at the An-
nual Parish Meeting was to thank Kris Lawless for all
her work on the Annual Report. She works tirelessly
for this Parish and it shows in the quality of what she
produces. We are so lucky to have her. Please look at
that report and let her know what a great job she did.
Also, a question was raised regarding awarding St.
Luke’s service crosses this year. A St. Luke’s service
cross was awarded in the fall to Joan McLean before
she moved. That is why one was not awarded at the
Annual Meeting.
We are going to be talking more about Stewardship
this year. We would like to get to a year round model
focusing on all aspects of stewardship (not just the an-
nual pledge drive). We need to not only be good stew-
ards of our finances but also our building and
grounds, our children, our programs, our worship, etc.
We will also talk about sharing our time, talent and
treasure as ways to be good stewards. If we look all
the aspects of stewardship, it will be easier when the
Page 8
8 THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
time comes for the pledge drive to see where each of
us can contribute. A quote I see every time I volun-
teer at the hospital says “No one ever became poor
by giving”. Think about that. Another quote says
“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure,
pressed down, shaken together and running over,
will be poured into your lap. For with the measure
you use, it will be measured to you."” (Luke 6:38).
We have many ways to give around St. Luke’s ~ San
Lucas and we each need to discern our own way.
Kathy Gallaher
JUNIOR WARDEN’S MESSAGE As I write this I have been Junior Warden for less
than two days and am already getting excited about
what will be happening at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas in
the coming year. First of all, however, I want to
thank all of you that provide the essential support
needed to keep our campus running. One vital
group is the Thursday Crew, a group of men AND
women that give unselfishly of their time and talents
to clean, make small repairs and make big improve-
ments to our buildings and grounds. This group is
why we don’t spend thousands of dollars on plumb-
ing, mechanical or electrical contractors to keep
things running. Come and join us on Thursday
mornings. You won’t be disappointed. Also, if you
see a pew broken, a light burned out or a faucet
dripping, drop a note to the office to let us know.
We’ll get it fixed.
Last year ended with a flurry of projects associated
with opening the WHAT shelter in the lower educa-
tion wing. This year we will continue with projects
to make our facility better at hosting these women.
We’re on the process of replacing the gates to the St.
Francis courtyard to make this area more secure.
We’re also replacing the windows in the lower edu-
cation wing with thermal pane windows that can
also provide the women a means of emergency exit.
One amenity we are unable to provide these women
is a shower so we’re converting part of a storage
room into a shower room. Interestingly, we’ve dis-
covered that this space was originally a restroom
when the building was built around 1943. We be-
lieve this was abandoned when the education wing,
library and kitchen were added around 1955. If only
these old walls could talk. John Mathieu
DISCERNMENT PROCESS Hello St. Luke's ~ San Lucas family! A
few years ago I heard a very strong voice
of God encouraging me to seek and con-
sider becoming a deacon. It is a call I have
heard throughout my life since I was a youth.
The path of my life has been a winding road of life
lessons leading me to something important. So a few
years ago I talked with Fr. Jaime and began my dis-
cernment for holy orders. As I was in the beginning
of the second phase, as many of you know, my hus-
band was diagnosed with a second primary cancer,
then he and I were in a serious motorcycle accident. I
prayed about and felt God reminding me that these
very things were creating in me that something He
had in mind. So I continued but as some of you re-
member life wasn't quite done knocking my family
down and so I had to make the decision to step back
for a bit.
Well the time has come that I should pick up that
journey again. The bishop has asked me to back up
to begin phase two again since much has changed in
my life since the first time. I am happy to begin
again. I ask for your support and prayers as I find
my way through this process, that I might find God's
will in my life and in this diocese.
I want to again thank you all for being my family in
these last several years of storms and trials. It has
been your love and faith that has held me up and
been a light in the darkness. You are and will be a
significant part of this journey for me. The work will
not just be for me and my discernment team, but for
each of you also, as family is part of the journey.
And so we shall begin.
God's peace and love be with us,

LET’S EAT TOGETHER!
CONGREGATIONAL POTLUCKS Last Sunday of every month
2:30-3:30PM - this month on March 26
Sharing food and eating with others is at the center of
our Christian and Episcopal identities. The Holy Food
we eat binds us as a community that is sent to love
and serve the Lord in our everyday lives. Historically,
the practice of sharing food and eating together, be it
Holy Bread or a bagel, have been a symbol and a sign
of transformational fellowship. In times of social frag-
mentation and divisiveness Christians are called to
come together and strengthen their communal bonds
of love.
On the last Sunday of every month we will have the
opportunity for the whole congregation of St. Luke’s ~
San Lucas to come together to share food and stories.
Bring something delicious to share!

10 WAYS TO SUPPORT OUTREACH
FOR LENT St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas for more than a century and a
half has been in the forefront of community service –
from the days when financial support was made to lo-
cal hospitals, to an important role in the creation of the
Free Clinic, to today’s hosting of a Women’s shelter.
Here are ten ways you can be part of this history.

bank. DEPOSIT your offerings in the basket in the
Narthex on Sunday mornings or to the church
office during office hours.
2. DONATE new and slightly worn clothing and hy-
giene products. Bring them to the church office
during office hours.
3. DONATE household furnishings and other items to
Boomerang’s consignment shop. St. Luke’s will
earn 50% of the sales price. DEPOSIT them on the
parish hall stage on Sunday mornings and office
hours. You may take them directly to Boomerang,
808 Main St. Downtown. Check with the office to
arrange pickup of heavy items.
4. DONATE your original works of Art to Boomerang
for sale.
5. DONATE costume jewelry to Boomerang. Bring to
church office.

CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL It has been so great to be back! I really missed the Sun-
day school children and it has been amazing being
back in Sunday school.
In February we celebrated Día de Los Niños (Day of
the Children) and enjoyed special treats and then we
got to hear the story of the boy who shared is lunch
and fed 5,000. We also got to learn about St. Valentine
and we continued onto more stories from Godly Play.
In March we will begin the many faces of Easter as we
go into Lent. We will also learn about St. Patrick’s
Day. The Sunday right before Easter we will share the
story of the Easter egg and our activity will be to deco-
rate eggs.
It is that time of year now where we will begin to get
ready for our amazing Easter egg hunt! To make the
day extra special, we will need help with getting more
plastic Easter eggs and candy. Last year was my first
year organizing the hunt and I realized that it is a real-
ly big event. To make it better and more organized, I
will need volunteers to help with filling, hiding, and
getting the children ready for the actual hunt it-
self. The children and I really appreciate everything
that our wonderful community does to come together
and make this day great and I can't wait for it to be an
even better event for them this year.

LENTEN SUNDAY TOPICS SERIES We are invited to explore cultural awareness, compe-
tence, and leadership in a series of presentations
based on the Rev. Eric Law’s work at the Kaleido-
scope Institute at the Diocese of Los Angeles. Please
join us from 11:40 to 12:40 each Sunday. Locations to
be announced!
WOMEN’S SPIRITUALITY GROUP All women are welcome to join this group for reading,
studying and sharing as we come together and ex-
pand our spiritual experiences with a feminine view.
Our study and discussion is based on the book, May I
have this Dance – An invitation to Faithful Prayer
Throughout the Year” by Joyce Rupp.
In March, we will meet on Saturday, March 11 from
10 AM to 12 PM and focus on the chapter, “March-
Leaning on God”. Please read the chapter prior to our
session together. Also, we invite you during Lent to
reflect each day on one of the “Forty Questions Our
Lean-To God Asks” found on page 62.
Remember that we enter the church building at the
north entrance, through the kitchen. This door will be
unlocked from 9:50 – 10:10AM for our safety.

Continuing this month, we are asking attendees to
considering bringing a donation of feminine products
for our Outreach program. With the WHAT shelter
there has been an increased need for these products.

YOUNG FAMILIES’ MEETING Sunday, March 19, 11:30-1:00PM, Children’s Chapel.
This meeting will be to help gather ideas for the year,
recruit some volunteers to help execute those ideas
and for us to socialize and share stories. Please bring
some food to share. This meeting is open to all – for
those with babies, kids in elementary, middle, high
schoolers and for those who want to support families
at St. Luke’s.
LENTEN LITURGY We will have the small, plain altar in the front, where
the High Altar currently is, and we will use it for the
season of Lent. I commend to you its simplicity and
humility for the season.
Every Friday at 12:15 PM we will offer prayers of the
Stations of the Cross. If the occasion permits, we
will do it bilingually.
At the 10 AM service, during Lent we will be using
the Book of Common Prayer Rite II Penitential Order,
with the variations between the Summary of the Law
and the 10 Commandments, and Eucharistic Prayer
A, the Agnus Dei for the fraction anthem, and the tra-
ditional Lord’s Prayer. Although Rite II is not nearly
as penitential as Rite I, it still allows for more repent-
ance, renewal and fasting than our experimental texts.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS
COLORING POSTERS For 7 Sundays we will have different posters in refer-
ence to the Stations of the Cross for coloring at the
Parish Hall during coffee hour. Everyone is welcome
to color- kids, teens and adults! Once the set is com-
pleted, the posters will be displayed in the Parish Hall
for all to enjoy and reflect.
FAMILY ORIENTED
INSTRUCTED EUCHARIST Saturday March 25, from 10:00AM-11:30AM.
Fr. Jaime and I are still working on the details, but
this will give an opportunities for families (adults and
children) to learn more about our Eucharistic practic-
es, vestments, setting, space, movements etc.
Fr. Eliacin Rosario-Cruz
NOTES FROM THE MUSIC ROOM Ash Wednesday on March 1st begins our observance
of the season of Lent, a time to slow down and medi-
tate on our current predicament. The word “lent” in
French means literally “slow,” and in music the Ital-
ian tempo marking “Lento” is often used for the slow
middle section between two fast movements, not un-
like the seasons of Epiphany and Easter. A lento
movement is often beautiful and expressive, too.
Speaking of expressive, we now have a bassoonist in
our midst. Mike Grigsby-Lane has returned to his
instrument of choice and, with oboist Hannah Fem-
ling, offers us an in-house double-reed dynamic duo.
Soprano Catherine van der Salm is helping Mike with
his breath-control, not unlike our need for self-control
in the Lenten season.
Catherine’s group, The Ensemble , will return to St.
Luke’s – San Lucas for a Friday evening program on
March 17th at 7 PM with a chamber opera perfor-
mance of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Eurid ice . There is a Len-
ten/Holy Week theme here of death and resurrection
played out as a Greek myth and performed by an in-
strumental ensemble and seven singers. Half-price
tickets are always available for members of our parish
community.

We will have to wait a little longer for our new trum-
pet stop to arrive for the Adams organ. The pipes are
made and will be shipped in early March with a dedi-
cation recital by Dr. Paul Tegels to follow. The Jazz
Vespers series will return on April 8th with special
guest flautist Cheryl Alex.

ALTAR FLOWERS A Touch of Beauty for our Worship
Have you noticed the lovely flower arrangement or
green plant on the altar every Sunday? Have you seen
the dedications of celebration or remembrance in the
Sunday bulletin? Ever wonder how that happens?
Well, here are the “whens” and “hows”.
Two times during the year are reserved for special
flowers; Christmas and Easter. We order extra flowers
and plants for these two feast days and ask for special
donations to support these special orders. With your
donation you may remember or honor a loved one,
which will be listed in the bulletin. These flowers and
plants usually are used for multiple Sundays.
During Lent we forgo flowers on the Altar. However,
you may still have a dedication of celebration or re-
membrance printed in the bulletin. This year the Sun-
days of Lent are March 5 through April 2. The dedica-
tion cost $35 and helps support altar flowers during
the remaining Sundays during the year. You can use
the same request form that is used for regular Sun-
days.
On all the remaining Sundays we have a fresh floral
arrangement on the Altar. Why not choose a Sunday
to remember someone dear to you or to offer thanks-
giving for a blessing in your life?
The process is easy:
1. Choose your date. We have a lovely Altar Flower
Calendar in the Narthex to help you determine the
date you would like. Any regular flower Sunday
can have multiple dedications so feel free to share.
2. Find one of the Altar Flower forms in the Narthex.
(Soon also in the Pew Pockets)
3. On this form write the tribute you wish to appear
in the Sunday bulletin and include your name as
the sponsor.
4. The dedication cost is $35, and goes to insure that
we have flowers on the Altar all regular Sundays
throughout the year.
5. Insert the completed form in the envelope provid-
ed with your contribution. If you submit a check,
please make it payable to St. Luke’s and note that
it is for “Altar Flowers”. This envelope can be
placed in the offering plate, handed to an Usher or
left in the church office.
If you have any questions or would like more infor-
mation, please call Gail Bauhs, 360-521-9340.
THE LIBRARY The Library committee is preparing to make an inven-
tory of the library. We would very much appreciate it
if borrowed books were returned. This will help us
make an accurate inventory. Thank you!
We are very pleased to announce that St Luke’s library
will be open during Coffee Hour on the first and third
Sundays of each month, beginning Sunday, March 5th.
Please note: No food or beverages -to protect the
books as well as the carpet and the upholstery. We
appreciate your co-operation.

be in the Narthex. All are welcome!
FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE No Friday Night Live for March (host needed!)
One of the best ways to build relationships and grow
together in Christ is by breaking bread together and a
great way to do this is to attend Friday Night Live.
Once each month, we gather in someone’s home to
share food, laughter and fellowship. However, no one
has offered to host FNL for March so as of this writ-
ing we won't be having this event in March. If you
would like to host, please call Sharon Mayhew as
soon as possible. Hosts have the option of providing
the main dish, or going with a potluck format. Re-
member, the Parish Hall is usually available to use as
a location if you'd like to host but would rather not
use your home.
We are also looking for hosts for April. If you’d like
to open your home for this event, please contact Sha-
ron Mayhew, 360-962-0334 or 360-574-0074 or Sha-
[email protected] . Hosts have the option of
providing the main dish or going with a potluck.

ARCHIVIST’S CORNER CHURCH QUESTIONS FOR 1938 On October 9, 1938, our rector then, Rev. Mook, pub-
lished a set of questions to the parish in The Lantern.
He wanted to encourage members to become more
aware of what the church offered, and how it was
run. He conducted a contest using the following
questions:
How many can correctly answer the following questions?
How many constitute our Vestry?
Name them.
What is the official corporate name of our Parish?
How many are enrolled in our Sunday School?
How many Communicant members do we have?
What is our total parish budget?
How much do we contribute to the Diocese and
the general Church?
Name six organizations we have in the Parish for women
or girls.
Name four organizations we have in the Parish for men
or boys.
How many services are held each Sunday and at what
hours?
We are going to use our collective historical wits to
find the answers to these questions, in 1938 terms, not
in today’s terms. Send your answers by March 17th to
the Parish Archivist, [email protected]
You can find the answers in either the History of St.
Luke’s Volume One, or in past Messenger articles by
the Archivist (recently I have been sneaking answers
Page 15
THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO 15
into some of the articles). Remember, this is in 1938
terms. You will get 10 points for each correct answer,
except #2, for which you will get 2 points for each
name (hint: look at Volume One).
We will post the winners and participants in the Par-
ish Hall. Good Luck and Good Hunting!

tates this group. All are welcome. The group meets off
-site at the Glenwood Place Senior Living (5500 NE
82nd Ave). Next meeting is Thursday, March 23 at
2PM.
PASTORAL CARE COMMITTEE Please let us know if you have someone who is not
able to come to church, is in some type of crisis, medi-
cal or otherwise, or, perhaps, is in the hospital, by
making a call to the office. Our meetings are on the
fourth Tuesday of the month. The next meeting will
be on March 28 at 6:30 PM in the Chapel of the Holy
Spirit, (Children’s Chapel).

TREASURER’S REPORT
BUDGET SUMMARY
“Dollars and Sense”
At the end of January we expect percentages to be at 8.3%
of budgeted revenue and expense.
Summary as of January 31, 2017
Total Budget Year to Date Percent
for the Year Actual of Total
Amounts Budget
Revenues $584,953 $ 61,206 10%
Expenses $584,953 $ 56,075 10%
Net Income 0 $ 5,131
Page 16
16 THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
Revenues: January revenues are greater than antic-
ipated and this is mostly due to a one-time transfer
of carryover funds raised last year and designated
for the WHAT Women’s Shelter project.
Expenses: Expenses are over year-to-date budget
projections by $7,329. This is not alarming and is
mainly due to quarterly pension payments and
higher utility bills which occur over the winter
months.
Additional Comments: Thank you for your early
pledge contributions. With greater amounts of money
received weekly, we hope to contribute over $22,000 to
outreach activities this year which includes $7,500 for
the rector/curate which will support families and indi-
viduals in need through their discretionary account.
We will also be able to continue supporting our chil-
dren, a new ten hour per week youth coordinator, sup-
port for young families ministry, music programs, and
our pastoral care ministry.
These enhancements, however, are in part supported
by one-time-only funds, which will need to be ad-
dressed through long-term budget planning and addi-
tional financial support as we enter 2018.
Thanks for your continued financial support of St.
Luke’s ~ San Lucas.

THE ENSEMBLE CONCERT Friday, March 17 at 7:00 PM
at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas
Orfeo ed Euridice, Christoph Gluck' s most famous opera, is
based on the myth of Orpheus. The opera details
Orfeo's journey to the underworld in order to return
with his wife, Euridice. Amore, however, has given
him the condition that he may not look at his wife un-
til they have returned. Wackiness ensues. Presented in
chamber form by an instrumental ensemble and seven
singers.
Special half-price tickets for St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas
members, just $10 when you reserve in advance! Don’t

St. Luke’s – San Lucas is a bilingual Episcopal Church serving Vancouver and Southwest Washington since 1853.
Our vision is to answer God’s call to be an Anglo-Hispanic faith community that works together to share the love of
Christ. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, our mission is to extend hospitality to all, to respond to human need
through service, and to grow in faith together.
