MARCH WAS KIDNEY HEALTH MONTH SO....LEARN HOW TO EAT

RENAL FRIENDLY!

In her blog, Canadian dietitian June Martin says that sometimes being a dietitian makes her feel like a detective. She explains that at times people’s blood work does not make sense and on further investigation she finds that although people may not change their diet drastically, the foods themselves change. New food suppliers may bring in new products that carry more additives. And one frequent (and suprising) culprit is foods labelled “low sodium.”

Low sodium foods can sometimes be an unlikely source of potassium. Changing your regular soup to a low salt variety may seem innocent enough; however, for people on a potassium restriction it can be dangerous. Manufacturers often substitute sodium chloride with potassium chloride for a saltier flavour. This switch can make potassium levels soar. But this doesn’t mean you give up on a lower-sodium diet. Just make sure to read nutrition lables so you know what you’re eating.

Join the Kidney Foundation of Canada’s Community Kitchen get sodium savvy: plan your meals, track your daily intake and share great low sodium recipes—without all the additives.
