Sydney author Angela Rhodes is seeking stories for a pro-
posed book about re-homed or rescued Golden Retrievers
and Labradors bought or obtained from local or council
pounds, the RSPCA, a Golden Retriever rescue organisa-
tion, or one taken over from friends, family members or
anyone who’s asked you to help by adopting a Goldie they
can no longer care for. Angela herself owns a much-loved
rescued Labrador, Cate.
If you or someone you know has a “rescue” Golden Re-
triever, you or they and the dog have a story, even if noth-
ing is known about the dog’s origins or why it needed a
new home. A Goldie has been given the chance of a new
life, and we’d love to hear from you! Please send your sto-
ry with details of how long you’ve had your rescued dog,
how it came to be adopted by you, anything known about
its past life and why it was seeking a new home. We’d also
like to hear how it has adapted to life with its new family,
including speed at learning its name and commands such
as “sit”, “walk” and so on. Children’s stories are welcome.
Remember to include your name and contact details
because all stories will be acknowledged on receipt. Also
be sure to advise whether you want your real name or a
pen name used. If you’ve got a photograph of your dog
with you, or your dog alone, please include that as well.
Please send your story to [email protected] or
post it to Angela Rhodes, P.O. Box 433, Surry Hills, NSW
2010.
Wanted...Rescued Golden Retriever Stories I’ve received an email request from Angela Rhodes, who is writing a book about rescued Golden Retriever & Labradors. An-gela is requesting anyone with stories that they would like to share to send them to her. All stories will be acknowledge with the author’s name.

Some of you who have attended Dr Tony Read’s rooms to have your dogs eyes tested will have seen this picture in Tony’s rooms. However many may have not. I heard about it from a friend and then asked if we could have a copy for the newsletter. I’m sure most of you will understand what this is about. I thought it quite funny and figured that you would also enjoy it. Thanks to the nurses at Veterinary Opthalmic Referrals and Dr Tony Read for allowing us to publish this.

RAFFLE TO HELP COOPER WITH HIS CRUCIATE SURGERY
ABORIGINAL ARTWORK BY THERESA CURTIS
Sandy and Steve, long time supporters of GRR who have raised a significant amount of money for our rescues by run-ning marathons, have kindly donated the Aboriginal artwork displayed above. Sandy and Steve generously donated the painting to GRR so that we could raise funds in the future. The money raised from the sale of raffle tickets for this stunning 36cm x 36cm unframed artwork by Theresa Curtis will be used to assist 5yr old Cooper who was surrendered to GRR in mid March this year after his owners advised GRR that they were downsizing and would not be able to take Cooper with them. Cooper was over-weight and was struggling to sit down or stand up. He was x-rayed by Dr Ben Acheson, GRR’s vet, who advised that both of Cooper’s cruciates were ruptured and he would need surgery to repair the damage. If anyone reading this has experienced a cruciate injury, you will know what it is like to endure constant pain. The pain is there all of the time and it restricts movement. It would appear that Cooper has been in pain for quite a while. Cooper is with Debbie and Tony who are prepared to do the hard yards to assist Cooper with his rehabilitation. Debbie and Tony have kindly offered to take Cooper back and forth to GRR’s vet for surgery, checkups, x-rays and in short, put their life on hold whilst Cooper gets back to good health. This is a big commitment from Debbie and Tony because at GRR we all know how much is involved when surgery of this kind is required. If you would like to be the proud owner of this beautiful piece of unframed acrylic on canvas dot painting by Theresa Curtis and help Cooper with his surgery why not purchase some tickets
The ticket price for the painting is one ticket for $5.00 or five tickets for $20.00 To purchase your raffle tickets simply deposit the amount for the tickets you wish to purchase in GRR’s Account at Bendigo Bank BSB 633-000 Account number 134848381 and email GRR at [email protected] to advise the number of tickets required and your contact details so that you can be notified if you are the winner. GRR will email your raffle ticket numbers by return email. For those who do not use email or internet banking and prefer to send a cheque or money order please enclose a note advising the number of raffle tickets you would like to purchase and your ad-dress details so that GRR can advise your ticket numbers by return mail. Please mail to Golden Retriev-er Rescue Inc. P O Box 4081 Oatley West NSW 2223
All postal and email purchases will be taken up until Tuesday, 23 April, 2013 at 5pm
The winner of the artwork will be drawn on Wednesday, 24 April 2013 and will be announced on GRR’s website and Facebook

APRIL FUNDAY REPORT
The Club held its first fun day for 2013 on Sunday April 7, at West Beach. Nature was kind to us, putting on a glorious burst of early autumn weather, warm enough to wade in the water with the dogs, and with light cloud to soften the sunlight. In spite of the recent deposits of huge amounts of seagrass along Adelaide's shores, the small bay just to the north of the boat launch was comparatively free of the grasses. We had the area almost to ourselves and the dogs made the most of it, swimming, digging, rolling and generally tearing around. After about an hour and a half on the beach, the party moved up to the picnic area where we enjoyed morning tea while the dogs (mostly) relaxed on the lawn. Lily was the lucky winner of the "door" prize, however she had to fend off a challenge from brother Toby and friends Lucy and Madison, who all thought they were equally deserving of the soft toy. The turnout for the day was outstanding – twenty-eight dogs came along with their families. They ranged in age from 4-month-old Walter to 17 year-old Duncan, and to my surprise there were no two dogs with the same name (you're not likely to find that in many classrooms these days!). The gathering included many long term members, and we were pleased to welcome several new mem-bers, some of whom were attending their first GRCSA event. Hopefully, some of the non-members who responded to the invitation will be inspired to join our Club. Thank you to everybody who came out for the beach day and made it such a success. The Club is currently making plans for more events in the coming months, and I was pleased to be able to speak with many of those present about what they would like to do for future fun days. My apologies to those I missed; if you have suggestions or comments on locations, activities or any other aspect of these outings, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. If anyone has any photographs from the day which we could add to our website, please send them along, or post to our Facebook page. Our next fun day is being planned for late May. Once settled, details will be published on the website and will also be distributed to members directly. Renée Amyot

When it becomes time to say goodbye… How do we know when it’s the RIGHT time
to say goodbye??
As we all grow older every day so do our beloved pets. For each year that we age our dogs on average will age 7 years, therefore
seven times faster than us.
18
As our pets advocate’s we make decisions on their behalf, with their best interest at heart. So when the time comes close to saying good-
bye and to reduce suffering here are some things we should consider… and questions to ask ourselves…
Quality of life…What does my dog do on a daily basis? Pain…Is my dog in pain? Can this be adequately managed? Eating/Drinking…Does my dog have a good appetite? Mobility…Is my dog able to get up/lay down and go outside easily? Personality/Demeanour…Is my dog happy? Has there been any
change in personali- ty? What happens when the time comes? For those people who have not yet experienced the passing of a pet, some things to consider before making the decision to euthanise could be…. Do I want to stay with my dog during the procedure? Would I like to have my dog privately cremated? Would I prefer to scatter my pet’s ashes? Or do I want to bury at home?
19
Who could I ask for support? The passing of a pet to many people is often as great as the loss of a human being. We all have our own grieving processes and this is absolutely normal. It’s important to do what feels right for you. The Animal Welfare League (AWL) in South Australia is a trusted business, and guarantee your pets are cremated at human standard. They provide general cremation and private cremations with a range of ceramic
or wooden urns
Noah’s Crossing staff are dedicated to ensuring your pets are treated as our own with dignity and respect. We ourselves have experienced the loss of much loved pets and understand the difficulties during this emotional time. We are
more than happy to provide you with support, during this difficult time.
May they never be forgotten, and forever cherished in our hearts. For more information please contact the staff at Noah’s Crossing Vet Clinic
