Since 1 January 2002 the eurobanknotes and coins have beenpart of everyday life for over300 million people in the euroarea.This leaflet depicts theseven euro banknotes and theeight euro coins, including theirsecurity features.Thebanknotes – inspired by thearchitectural styles of sevenperiods in Europe’s culturalhistory – are of an identicaldesign throughout all membercountries of the euro area.While the side of the eurocoins depicting three differentmaps of Europe is common toall 12 countries, the country-specific reverse side featuresdesigns which reflect eachmember country’s nationalidentity. On the basis of amonetary agreement, thePrincipality of Monaco, theRepublic of San Marino and theVatican City State are alsoallowed to issue their owneuro coins. All of thebanknotes and coins are legaltender in any member countryof the euro area.

SECURITY FEATURES: L5, L10 AND L20

Various security features have been incorporatedinto the euro banknotes. They make it easy to checkwhether a banknote is genuine. The euro banknotesare printed on pure cotton paper, which gives them aunique feel. Several parts on the front are printed inrelief and can be identified by touch. You can seeother security features by holding the banknotes upto the light or tilting them.

SECURITY FEATURES: L50, L100, L200AND L500

Some of the security features on the e50, e100, e200and e500 banknotes are different from those on thelower-value banknotes, adding further to their security.

SPAIN The effigy of King Juan Carlos I de Borbón y Borbón is reproduced on the e1 and e2 coins. Miguel deCervantes, the father of Spanish literature, is shown onthe 10, 20 and 50 cent coins, reflecting the universalityof the man and his work.The Cathedral of Santiago deCompostela, one of the most famous pilgrimage destinations in the world, is depicted on the 1, 2 and 5 cent coins.

GREECE The e2 coin depicts a scene from a Spartan mosaic featuring Europa, the Greek mythical figure from whomour continent took its name.The e1 coin shows an owlmotif taken from an ancient Athenian 4 drachma coin.The 10, 20 and 50 cent coins portray leading Greekfigures from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries,while an Athenian trireme, a corvette and a seagoingtanker are featured on the 1, 2 and 5 cent coins respectively.

GERMANY The e1 and e2 coins feature the federal eagle, a traditional symbol of German sovereignty, set amid thestars of the European Union.The Brandenburg Gate,which symbolises the division and subsequent unificationof Germany, appears on the 10, 20 and 50 cent coins.An oak twig, reminiscent of the design on the oldGerman pfennig coins, is depicted on the 1, 2 and 5cent coins.

BELGIUMThe Belgian coins show King Albert II and his monogram – a capital “A” underneath a crown – setamong the 12 stars of the European Union.

FRANCE A tree, symbolising life, continuity and growth, appearson the e1 and e2 coins. It is surrounded by theRepublican motto “liberté, égalité, fraternité”.The classical theme of the sower is illustrated on the 10, 20and 50 cent coins, while a young and feminineMarianne, a symbol of the French Republic, adorns the1, 2 and 5 cent coins.

IRELAND All the Irish coins have the same national side showinga Celtic harp, a traditional symbol of Ireland.The word“Ireland” is shown in Irish (Éire).

ITALY The e2 coin features a portrait of Dante Alighieri by Raphael.The e1 coin shows Leonardo da Vinci’sdrawing illustrating the ideal proportions of the humanbody.The 10, 20 and 50 cent coins depict “The Birth ofVenus” by Botticelli, a sculpture by Umberto Boccioniand the statue of Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninusrespectively.The other coins feature the Castel delMonte (1 cent), the Mole Antonelliana (2 cent) and theColosseum (5 cent).

LUXEMBOURG The coins show the effigy of His Royal Highness theGrand Duke Henri.The word “Luxembourg” is writtenin Luxembourgish (Lëtzebuerg).

AUSTRIA The e2 coin shows a portrait of the radical pacifistBertha von Suttner.Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, thefamous Austrian composer, is depicted on the e1 coin.Some of Vienna’s most famous buildings adorn the 10 cent (St. Stephen’s Cathedral), 20 cent (BelvederePalace) and 50 cent (Secession Building) coins.The 1, 2 and 5 cent coins show a gentian flower, an edelweissand an Alpine primrose respectively.

THE NETHERLANDSTwo different designs – both of Queen Beatrix in profile – are used. On the e1 and e2 coins, the words“Beatrix, Queen of the Netherlands” in Dutch appearto the right of the profile. On the 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50cent coins, the same wording encircles the profile.The12 stars of the European Union also feature in bothdesigns.

PORTUGALThe e1 and e2 coins feature some of the country’scastles and coats of arms, set amid the 12 stars ofthe European Union.The royal seal of 1144 is shownin the centre.The seal depicted on the 10, 20 and 50cent coins dates back to 1142.The central area ofthe 1, 2 and 5 cent coins contains Portugal’s firstroyal seal of 1134 and the name of the country.

FINLAND Cloudberries and cloudberry flowers appear on thee2 coin, while the motif of two flying swans featureson the e1 coin.The heraldic lion is depicted on the1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent coins.

MONACOThe e2 coin depicts HSH Prince Rainier III,surrounded by the 12 stars of the European Union.The e1 coin shows a double portrait of HSH PrinceRainier III and HSH Hereditary Prince Albert in profile, also encircled by the 12 stars.The 10, 20 and50 cent coins depict the Prince’s seal.The 1, 2 and 5cent coins show the coat of arms of the SovereignPrinces of Monaco.

SAN MARINO The Government building (Palazzo Pubblico) isdepicted on the e2 coin, while the e1 coin showsthe Republic’s official coat of arms.The threetowers, Guaita, Cesta and Montale, appear on the 50 cent coin.The 20 cent coin features the SaintMarino, based on a canvas of the Guercino school,while the 10 cent coin depicts the Basilica of SanMarino.The 1, 2 and 5 cent coins show the thirdtower, the Statue of Liberty and the first tower respectively.

VATICAN CITY All coins show the effigy of His Holiness Pope JohnPaul II, Sovereign of the State of Vatican City, in profile facing to the left.The words “CITTÀ DELVATICANO” also feature, together with the 12 starsof the European Union and the initials of the designer and engraver (GV and UP respectively).
