The starting point of the ErP Directive:

• To improve the environmental performance of products.

• To establish minimum environmental criteria for individual product categories.

• Extended producer responsibility.

• The Life-Cycle concept.

The context in which the ErP directive is embedded:

• The ErP directive is one of many tools used by the European Commission to govern the environmental performance of products (Integrated Product Policy – Sustainable Consumption and Production).

• In addition to legal instruments, it also encompasses market instruments.

• The EuP directive is introduced in 2005: Life-Cycle Assessment in legislation.

• Evaluation and comparison tools are put in place, from a unidimensional perspective. Some of the tools are compulsory and some arevoluntary.

European policy instruments for products:

• The ErP directive is introduced in 2009: this directive was broader in focus.

• Environmental Product Declarations come to the fore as new models for comparison.

• Great emphasis is given to Eco-labels.

European policy instruments for products:

• There are some complaints about a perceived lack of co-ordination between the existing instruments.

• Each instrument uses different mechanisms to set criteria and to establish methods for comparison and evaluation.

• In October 2013 the pan-European Environmental Footprint pilot project gets underway (product and organisation).

• It aims to become the key component of European policy instruments for products by 2020.

ErP Directive and Ecodesign:

• The ErP directive is the starting point of all work in ecodesign.

• Ecodesign goes beyond the requirements imposed by the ErP directive.

• Ecodesign enables firms to position themselves and their products within the environmental market instruments.
