The Energy MBA

Five years ago, the leaders of this sun-scorched,

wind-swept nation made a bet: To reduce Portu-

gal’s dependence on imported fossil fuels, they

embarked on an array of ambitious renewable en-

ergy projects - primarily harnessing the country’s

wind and hydropower, but also its sunlight and

ocean waves. Today, Lisbon’s trendy bars, Porto’s factories and

the Algarve’s glamorous resorts are powered sub-

stantially by clean energy. Nearly 45 percent of

the electricity in Portugal’s grid will come from

renewable sources this year, up from 17 percent

just five years ago. (…)The International Energy Agency called Portu-

gal’s renewable energy transition a “remarkable

success” (…), Manuel Pinho, Portugal’s minister

of economy and innovation from 2005 until last

year, who largely masterminded the transition,

adding, “Politicians must take tough decisions.”

The Energy MBA

Public awareness of the need to drastically reduce CO2 emissions is higher than ever before. The next decades will be marked

by a global effort to create a sustainable relationship with energy and the environment and this will produce a new era of

investment and technological change worldwide.

Execution will be the key. In the next decades, management expertise in energy (including production, efficiency and mobility)

will be an important driver to allow a rapid deployment of a large number of new projects.

Portugal has a unique environment to train a new generation of highly skilled management professionals in energy and

sustainability, with emphasis on clean and renewable energies. The country is a frontrunner in renewable energies and

electrical mobility and exceptionally open to innovation. It hosts several flagship projects, such as the largest wind park in

Europe and the largest solar plant in the world, a very ambitious program of large hydro new projects and the intention to

create the first ever national platform for electrical cars.

This unique environment led us to create The energy MBA, a program aimed at developing a new generation of highly

skilled management professionals and leaders in the evolving energy industry. This program is focused on providing creative

interdisciplinary individuals the needed management tools, resources and perspectives on the current and future potential

energy environment, leaning towards clean and renewable energies.

The energy MBA targets high-quality candidates from various countries, with diverse backgrounds. The program is not

limited to students with specialized energy backgrounds, but instead seeks individuals who are committed to contribute to

the development of clean and renewable energy systems and in the design and management of energy markets and projects.

Two semesters of classes will be held at ISCTe, in Lisbon - Portugal and one semester of energy-related classes

will take place at Columbia University, in new york City. In addition, students will have a residential stay in the

“energy Living Lab” in Portugal. This program structure provides students with the opportunity to benefit from a

challenging academic environment in two international universities and also to study in-site the operation of some of the

most innovative renewable energy projects in the world.

Come join us in this unique experience!

The Energy MBA

A real international experienceThe first two semesters of classes are held at ISCTE Business School (Lisbon), a leading business school in Portugal, while the

last semester of electives classes is held at Columbia University (NYC, USA), one of the best universities in the world.

The Energy MBA offers its students a real international experience which allows them to have the time to really benefit from

the full experience of studying in two different universities, enjoying the lively and dynamic campus ambience. Students will

be in one class at ISCTE Business School, allowing for the creation of a strong team spirit and companionship among them. In

the second year, they will attend classes together with other Columbia University students therefore benefiting from a real

international experience, studying, working, sharing experiences with colleagues from several countries, developing a strong

international contacts network.

The energy Living LabAt the end of the first year, students will follow The Energy Living Lab track, which consists of a multi-day field trip to several

energy projects in Portugal, including some of the largest and most innovative projects in the world.

Personal Development ProgramIBS strongly strives for the development of students’ skills in alignment with career opportunities. Likewise, once participants

join IBS MSc.BA, the PDP - Personal Development Program will contribute, all the way through, to self-commitment towards

a successful development of career perspectives and strategies. The program aims to contribute to self-assessment and

identification of career drives, of professional strengths and weaknesses, as well as of professional preferences.

energy and PoliticsThe Energy and Politics module analyses Energy as a problem of choices and political conflicts, as the awareness of the

various systems of forces and interests present at a given historical moment and of the way in which they can interact, how

they manage to combine and relate is crucial for energy-related issues and decisions.

Creativity ProgramThe program includes an innovative Creativity Program. At the end of the program, students should be aware of their creative

abilities to think “out of the box”, to create and better sell ideas and to trust their capacities in managing complexity and

uncertainty when facing unexpected and unknown situations.

Lisbon is Europe’s West Coast capital and the closest gateway to Africa and Americas. It is also known as

the white city, for its unique luminosity. The light, the atmosphere and the Atlantic climate, blended with

Mediterranean influences, with warm sunny winters and cool summers, contribute altogether to offer a

unique experience for each visitor. Facing the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon is surrounded by some of the best

beaches in Europe as well as some tourist and historical hallmarks such as Estoril and Sintra.

Lisbon is one of the safest cities in Europe and it has a very competitive cost of living, making a one year stay an enjoyable

and less demanding budget experience. Enchanted with historical marks, Lisbon is also a dynamic business center with a

distinctive international orientation.

ISCTE Business School is strategically located in the center of Lisbon. At its doorsteps, there is a subway station and wide

number of bus routes, allowing an easy and fast access to any part of the city. Within a short walking distance there is a wide

choice of hotels, restaurants and shops, as well as one of the largest sport and recreational centers of Lisbon. The airport is

at ten minutes driving distance.

ISCTE Business School (IBS) has its own graduate building where The Energy MBA classes take place. It is modern, fully

equipped with state-of-the-art technology and research databases, with several study rooms, computer labs, internet

wireless access points, recreational areas, a restaurant and a permanent art gallery.

New York City is a leading global city, exerting a powerful influence over global commerce, finance, culture, fashion and

entertainment. As host of the United Nations headquarters, it is also an important center for international affairs. New York

City is a global hub of international business and commerce and is a major center for finance, insurance, real estate, media

and the arts in the United States. “Culture just seems to be in the air, like part of the weather”, as the writer Tom Wolfe said.

Columbia University is one of the top academic and research institutions in the world, conducting pathbreaking research in

medicine, science, the arts, and the humanities. It includes three undergraduate schools, thirteen graduate and professional

schools, and a school of continuing education. Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs is located in the
