Together with the SIMODRIVE® 611Digital converter system and the SIMATIC® S7programmable controller, the SINUMERIK 840Dprovides a complete digital system which issuitable for complex machining tasks and whichexcels with its fine dynamics and precision.

The standard system offers a wide range ofspecialized functions for drilling, turning,milling, grinding and handling technologies– as it also does for nibbling, punching or lasermachining technologies.

The SINUMERIK 840D offers a convincingrange of innovative technology-specificfunctions.

Standard cycles are available for frequentlyrecurring machining operations in the drilling,milling and turning technologies.

And even extremely exacting applications, like5-axis milling in the manufacture of tools andmolds, are no problem for the SINUMERIKgeneration. The continuity from the CADsystem right through to the workpiece andintelligent motion control allow fast, preciseproduction of even highly complex parts. Theseparation of geometry and technology withRTCP (remote tool center point) and 3D tooloffset simplifies alterations. And the promptmachine stop facility, in the event of toolbreakage, for example, protects both machineand workpiece.

Solving digital tasks fast andprofessionally

The standard SINUMERIK 840D control in-cludes tailor-made functions for high produc-tivity and precision for grinding, flexible axismovements with the aid of positioning axesand reciprocating functions, short machiningtimes using multiple feed values in a blockand fast set-up by means of handwheel over-lay.

Time-critical process signals are connected todirect CNC inputs/outputs and programmedby synchronous actions. Special axis couplingscan be defined using cam tables, e.g. forswing-frame grinding. Transformation of aninclined axis also permits inclined bed appli-cations, and tool compensation is includedon-line to permit simultaneous grinding anddressing (continuous dressing).

In conjunction with adaptive control, theSINUMERIK 840D enables optimum utili-zation of spindle power, prevents overload,protects the workpiece, reduces machiningtimes and improves surface quality withoutthe need for additional hardware.

Handling tasks, such as work-piece mani-pulation, machine loading, packaging andpalletizing, can be easily performed byconnecting the handheld terminal (HT 6).

In the same way, an “electronic gear with non-linear coupling” is also possible. In additionto the manufacture of convex gear tooth sur-faces, it is thus possible to compensate for

nonlinear characteristics of the process.

The performance of the SINUMERIK 840D doesnot stand still. It is based on just a handful ofmodules that can all be combined to coverthe whole machine spectrum.

Operator control, monitoring andprogramming

You can choose between a number of differentslimline operator panels to provide exactly theright amount of operator convenience for yourapplication. Handling and teaching tasks areperfectly executed with the HT 6 HandheldTerminal.

Variable CNC performance

We offer you the same variety when it comesto the NCUs. The range of scalable NCU hard-ware ranges from simple positioning tasks intwo axes to NCUs with 31 axes, of which 12axes can interpolate in an NC channel.

The special technology functions – for examplefor laser machining or handling – are suppliedin the form of extended NCU system softwareon PC cards.

The NCUs feature a PROFIBUS-DP interfaceand can be operated on the bus either as amaster or slave.

The medium and upper performance rangesare covered by the SINUMERIK 840D power-line, for which the term performance explosionis no exaggeration. For this innovation – inconjunction with the HMI software – consistsof the correspondingly most powerful NCUmodules that SINUMERIK has to offer. Thismeans, for example, in the case of the NCU572.4, a two-and-a-half-fold increase in relativeperformance over its predecessor. An increasethat immediately benefits your productivity.

Consistent configuring, standardized PLCmachine programs and communicationsbring with them the advantages of integratedhardware and PLC functionality and of theapplication itself.

For Programming Too:The Greatest Measure of Freedom for You …

Its open-system philosophy is theSINUMERIK 840D’s real selling point. Standardsystems with a wide range of NC functionswhich are configured on the NC languagelevel and which can be adapted to your ma-chine with familiar SIMATIC tools via the PLCare the first step towards an open system.

In the operating areas, you can integrate yourown menu trees, as well as input forms andhelp displays for specific machining operations.Machine tool manufacturers can alter the HMIhowever they want and implement their spe-cial operating philosophy using Windows tech-nology.

One important feature of the open systemsphilosophy of the SINUMERIK 840D is thatuser-specific system cycles and functionmacros can be configured in the NC kernelwith standard development tools. The object-oriented programming language C++ is usedin this task. The basis of the CNC programminglanguage is DIN 66025.

But the 840D is also at home with other lan-guages. We have implemented a CNC high-level language for the various technologicaldemands of modern machine tools whichoffers a great degree of freedom.

Programming options

Part programming is performed using theeditor of the respective HMI module. With thiseasy-to-use editor, you can program cyclesand contours directly and then check the re-sults in the graphic dynamic machining simu-lation. You can select side view, top view and3D simulation in the views with/without toolpath display or with the zoom function, eitherfrom the workpiece directory or from theeditor.

Problem-free programming

The SINUMERIK system includes an extremelypowerful geometry processor which allowsyou to make corrections at any time and atany point in a finished program, dispensingwith the need for separate programming work-stations. DIN input is also possible, so that theprogram code is available if required.

The system software of the SINUMERIK 840Dcontains a wide range of unusual NC functionsthat you are not likely to find in comparableNC controls.

You can, for example, interpolate using avariety of different methods: linear, circular,spline, polynomial or helical interpolation –or many other state-of-the-art functions.

With the universal interpolator NURBS you caninterpolate nearly anything – measured points,freeform surfaces, any curve that can be des-cribed mathematically (parabola, hyperbola,ellipse etc.). NURBS performs the control-internal motion guidance and path interpola-tion and with it complicated arithmetic andprogramming tasks. Not to mention the factthat B-splines form the basis of most CADsystems – which will make their integrationinto the control that much simpler.

Another example of the more unusualfunctions is FRAME – a description in Cartesianspace for free, combined transformation (off-setting, rotating, scaling, mirroring) of coordi-nate systems. Used with swiveling tools,FRAME makes machining much more flexible.

Comprehensive motion control functions ofthe SINUMERIK 840D make your machine toolmuch faster, more accurate and smoother.The function “Look Ahead“, for example, “sees“a parameterizable number of traverse blocksin advance and optimizes their machiningvelocity. On sharp changes of direction, thevelocity is reduced beyond block boundariesthus preventing beveling of the contour.Tangential block transitions are machined evenbeyond block boundaries without any loss inspeed.

Simply more productive

The Spline Interpolation, Look Ahead, andFRAME functions, together with the integratedcompressor for converting linear blocks tospline blocks, make the SINUMERIK 840Dappreciably faster than comparable controls,so that in many cases machining times canbe halved or parts production doubled withno loss of quality.

In addition to the velocity-dependent feed-forward control as basic function, we haveimplemented the acceleration-dependentfeed-forward control thanks to the digital link.It eliminates contour deviations which can becaused by following errors, for example.Result: the utmost precision is possible evenat a high tool path velocity.

With the basic function ”Jerk Limitation”, youcan protect mechanical parts and optimizetravel behavior.

The new continuous dressing function is de-signed to maximize productivity in grinding.It enables grinding and dressing to be carriedout simultaneously, which speeds up the rateof metal removal and also improves surfacequality.

ManualTurn, AutoTurn, ShopMill andShopTurn: to turn your SINUMERIK into areal shopfloor NC
