Senior Pak and Senior Mart Food Arrive at the COA

If you receive Senior Pak from

the LaGrange County Council on

Aging or if you come in and shop

out of the Senior Mart pantry, for

the most part, your food comes

from Community Harvest in Fort

Wayne. The LaGrange County

Council on Aging purchases the

food at a “very” discounted price

to offer this food to seniors that

are qualified for the program. We

receive donations for the food

pantry and in the past have re-

ceived a grant from the LaGrange

County Community Foundation to

help with the purchase of the

food. We also were able to use

this money to purchase turkeys

twice last year, for people that were eligible for Senior Mart.

Normally we schedule food pick up when we have another trip to Fort

Wayne to save on gas. As you can see in the picture, it quite often requires

some creative thinking. The person that we transported happened to be in a

wheelchair, so the driver secured the bags of groceries on the rear seat to

make sure they didn’t fall. If you see a staff/board member of the LaGrange

County Community Foundation thank them for the Caring Community grant

that they gave to us to make this food available. Great job to the LaGrange

“THE POTTY”

A LITTLE THREE-YEAR-OLD BOY IS SITTING ON THE TOILET. HIS MOTHER THINKS HE HAS BEEN

IN THERE TOO LONG, SO SHE GOES IN TO SEE WHAT'S UP.

THE LITTLE BOY IS SITTING ON THE TOILET LOOKING AT A BOOK. BUT ABOUT EVERY 15 SECONDS OR SO;

HE PUTS THE BOOK DOWN, GRIPS ONTO THE TOILET SEAT WITH HIS LEFT HAND AND HITS HIMSELF ON

TOP OF HIS HEAD WITH HIS RIGHT HAND.

HIS MOTHER SAYS: "BILLY, ARE YOU ALL RIGHT? YOU'VE BEEN IN HERE FOR A WHILE."

BILLY SAYS: "I'M FINE, MOMMY. I JUST HAVEN'T GONE POTTY YET."

MOTHER SAYS: "OK, YOU CAN STAY HERE A FEW MORE MINUTES. BUT, BILLY, WHY ARE YOU

HITTING YOURSELF ON THE HEAD?"

BILLY SAYS: "WORKS FOR KETCHUP." Donations Continued…

August is National Immunization Awareness Month!

August is National Immunization Awareness Months. For seniors (over age 65),

you may need one or more vaccines, even if you received vaccines as a child or

as a young adult. Ask your doctor which ones are right for you. Vaccines recom-

mend for older adults can prevent:

Influenza (Flu)

Shingles (Herpes Zoster)

Diphtheria/Tetanus

Pertussis (Whooping Cough)

Pneumococcal (Pneumonia)

Influenza—The flu vaccine can protect you for one flu season. The vaccine is

designed to protect you from 3 different types of the flu virus that experts pre-

dict will be the most common during the upcoming flu season. Get the vaccine

as soon as it is possible for your area. Flu season usually peaks around January

or February, but it can occur as late as May.

Shingles—The only way to reduce the risk of developing shingles and the long

term pain that can follow shingles is to get vaccinated. You are at risk of shin-

gles if you have had the chickenpox. Shingles is caused by a reactivation of the

chickenpox virus in a person’s body. Your risk for getting shingles begins to rise

around 50. Anyone 60 years of age or older should get the shingles vaccine,

regardless of whether they recall having had chickenpox or not.

Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis (Whooping Cough) - There are four combination

vaccines used to prevent diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis. DTaP, Tdap, DT,

and Td. Two of these (DTaP and DT) are given to children younger than seven

years of age, and two (Tdap and Td) are given to older children and adults. Talk

to your doctor if you are unsure which vaccines you or your children have re-

ceived in the past.

Pneumococcal (Pneumonia) - PPSV or PPSV23 are vaccines for all adults 65

years and older and those 2 years of age and older at high risk of disorders.

Vaccinations are recommended for all adults 65 years of age and older.

For additional information on vaccinations, and

which ones you should get to protect yourself,

please consult your doctor. For additional infor-

mation on the vaccinations listed above, please visit

http://www.vaccines.gov/who_and_when/seniors/
