The City of North Charleston was recently named a “Playful City USA” community by KaBOOM!, the national non-profit dedicated to saving play for America’s children. 151 cities and towns across the country received the designation of which only 5 were recognized from the State of South Carolina. KaBOOM! created “Playful City USA” in 2007 to help local governments address the play deficit by ensuring children have the time and space they need to play.

“The power of play can impact many of the urgent problems facing our cities, from the epidemic of childhood obesity to poor school performance,” said Darell Hammond, KaBOOM! Founder and CEO. “When leaders support the cause of play, children live happier and healthier lives.”

North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey stated, “The North Charleston Recreation Department offers a wealth of activities and space for play that promotes healthy lifestyles including sports for all ages at our many athletic complexes, senior programming in our community centers, afterschool and summer camps for our city’s youth, and passive play at the numerous playgrounds dotting the city.” Mayor Summey continued, “We take great pride in providing our citizens with play areas and programming that rival the best in the nation.”

Dear Residents,North Charleston is known for its outstanding recreation programs and beautiful facilities. Our Recreation Department maintains strong leadership and is fortunate to have volunteers who offer dedicated service to our citizens by providing them with various, fun-filled, recreational opportunities.

Please take time to explore the recreational opportunities offered to the community. You will be as proud as I am of the success of the North Charleston Recreation Department.

Sincerely,

R. Keith Summey, MayorCity of North Charleston

The North Charleston Recreation Department is always looking for volunteer coaches and team sponsors. Help support the youth of North Charleston by becoming a team sponsor or volunteer coach for a variety of youth sports offered by the recreation department. Sponsoring a team is a great marketing opportunity reaching thousands of individuals while supporting our young ath-letes. Volunteer coaches have the opportunity to instruct the basic skills of a particular sport(s) while teaching life skills such as sportsmanship and teamwork. Sponsors receive the following:

● Your Company Name on the uniform jerseys ● Your Company Name on all schedules for the particular age group that you sponsor ● Sponsor Plaque with team photo ● Invitation to the Volunteer and Sponsor Appreciation Banquet in October

Cost to sponsor a team(s): ● Single Team Sponsor $250.00 ● Silver Sponsor (3-teams) $600.00 ($200.00 per team) ● Platinum Sponsor (10-teams) $1500.00 ($150.00 per team) By sponsoring multiple teams, a company has the opportunity to spread their marketing plan over multiple sports throughout a year, i.e. a baseball team, a football team, a basketball team, etc.

All volunteers undergo a yearly background check. Each volunteer is required to complete a Vol-unteer Application and a Coaches Code of Ethics before you are allowed to participate in any capacity with a team.

The philosophy of the North Charleston Recreation Department is to instill a positive attitude, sportsmanship, basic fundamentals, confidence, and high moral standards. Youth Sports Pro-grams develop the physical, psychological, and social aspects of youth. Our programs emphasize participation, fun, sportsmanship, and downplays a competitive approach to sports. Participants, parents, and coaches are expected to support this philosophy. For more information on becoming a volunteer or sponsor, please call (843) 767-0782 or email [email protected].
