GET INTO THE AUSTRALIA DAY SPIRIT! The Frencham Smith collaboration first began at the National Folk Festival in April 2002. At the time Liz Frencham was growing in her role as bass player with the Sydney Celtic trio Jigzag, and was looking to spread her wings as a vocalist. Fred Smith had written an album’s worth of ballads for women’s vocals and was looking for the right gal. He found her. Since then they recorded the acclaimed album Into My Room and have become a major force on the Australian Folk circuit, both as a duo and individually: In 2005 Liz released her first solo album “Jericho”. In that year the documentary film Bougainville Sky was released about Fred’s work in the Pacific and he moved to the United States where he has become a respected songwriter on the competitive US Scene. Fred returned to Australia IN 2007 to tour with Liz behind their second album Lovethongs, a collection of love songs with an Australian flavour. Liz Frencham does most of the vocal duties for Frencham Smith delivering songs with sensitivity and lion-hearted courage. Embracing her double bass like a lover, Liz invites you along a journey through a luminous emotional land-scape, reassuring you with a warm, generous voice and a smile which has become her trademark. TAKING ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE “Solar is the way of the future”, said Cabonne Mayor Kevin Duffy. “Cabonne Council included in its 2007/08 Strategic Plan the need to respond to Climate Change and took the opportunity when planning the Waluwin Community Centre to include a 5kWh Solar Grid-connect System in its design. Waluwin is now complete and the Solar panels are operational feeding power back up the electricity grid”, he added. Council were successful in obtaining a rebate offer under the Solar Homes and Communities Plan, from the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts. The grid-connect system was installed with the intention to set a good example for the community as well as to help Council to minimise it carbon footprint. Recent announcements about the Solar Bonus Scheme by the NSW Government means Council will now receive payment for ALL the Solar electricity generated, approximately $5,000pa. The pay back on the investment will now be approximately 8 years instead of the original 17 years. Visitors to the Waluwin Community Centre will be able to see the current solar production in kWh on a live display. “Council were also pleased that locally born David Phillips from Ethical Energy was appropriately qualified to design and install the system,” said Mayor Kevin Duffy.

Clr Duffy concluded by saying “I encourage all Cabonne residents to set 26 January aside and join other Cabonne residents in celebrating how great it is to be Australian”.

Letters to the Editor... I would like to thank the Canowindra Fire Brigade for the timely removal of the Santas and Christmas trees that deco-rated the awnings of many shops in our town this Christmas season. Not only were they removed, but also the brackets that held them in place. This has tidied up the streetscape enormously and is very apparent, especially from the balcony of the Old Vic Inn. Kind regards Graham Beasley The Old Vic Inn ———————————————— Canowindra’s new tourist brochure, has been spoilt by incorrectly identifying the site of the “pub” held up by Ben Hall, in September, October and November 1863. The most notorious of these, was that siege of 11 October which lasted three days. Cowra were prevented from intervening by the flooded Belubula River. The “monument” in question on Icely Street commemorates the site of the “Travellers’ Rest Inn” built in 1846 by Thomas Icely on land granted to him by the Crown, Gazetted 6 November 1837 as a “Grant of Land B” - 20 February 1838, with a levied “Quit Rent of 1 Pepper Corn”. The grant decreed that this 640acres should be known as “Canowindra” (first official record of the name). By 1850 there was a healthy trade along “Icely Street” (the Cowra route) which declined by 1858 when the river crossing was moved 100m or so up stream from the original site (current Swinging Bridge). On 2 June 1858, the land and Inn were sold for 3,500 (pounds) to William Robinson snr, on whose death, 30 June 1860, his wife Eliza inherited the Inn, with its debts, which she continued to run for some time, until her son William Robinson jnr bought the Inn from his mother for 1,000 (pounds) on 30 June 1866 on her marriage to Thomas Walsh (Eliza was illiterate and yet owned property). Thereafter her son took up the Canowin-dra Inn (see plaque/ site of the Royal) in 1862 moving from the Travellers’ Rest Inn, which Licence expired in 1872. The Monument in contention was erected in 1951, wrongly, to commemorate Ben Hall’s hold up(s) and the river crossing by Governor Fitz Roy 26 November 1846. In 1979 after research, the Historical Society attached a brass plaque dated 7 April 1979 correcting the error. In the last few years the Society has successfully convinced Cabonne Council to replace the tourist signs giving direction to the “Ben Hall” monument, to that of the “Monument”. It is disappointing that the error of 1951 is still being perpetuated. Yours sincerely, Bill Barwood Icely Street Canowindra

SWIMMING NEWS Swimming Club is back for the New Year and it looks as if surf swimming is the way to get those times down. In the Spoon, or 33m freestyle, Isobelle Lynch smashed her time by 8 seconds; Angus Andrews took 6 seconds from his best while Alex and Laura Flannery swam five seconds faster than before. Julia Wright took four seconds from her PB while Max Coady took a second from his time in the heat and semi and three seconds from his time in the final. The winner of the spoon was Xavier Lynch who took 2 seconds from his time in the semi and a second off his time in the final for a final personal best time of 60 seconds. The winners of the relay in lane two were Will Wright, Angus Andrews, Abbey Slattery, Georgia Balcomb, Joanna Bal-combe, Jossie Lynch, Cassie Naylor and Erica Blanch.

BUSINESS HOUSE RELAY Sunday 31 January is Canowindra Swimming Club’s Carnival Day and a major part of the day is the Business House Relay which will be swum at about 1:45pm. This involves a team of six swimmers who nominate a team time and then attempt to swim closest to that time. Oh and by the way you don’t have to actually ‘swim’ the lap; it can be freestyle, backstroke, ballet pirouettes complete with tutu if you like, just get from one end of the pool to the other as close as possible to the nominated time. So get your team together and start practicing!!!
