At the staff meeting for OneLegacy’sSouth/Metro Los Angeles office, the change inthe company’s approach to hospital develop-ment was apparent. “We need to be in the hos-pitals early,” Renee Hawthorne, OneLegacyCOO, reminded the group, “We need to be theones driving the donor process.”

In the North/Central Los Angeles regionalstaff meeting, procurement transplant coordi-nator (PTC) Antonio Molina cited CaliforniaTransplant Donor Network’s success in work-ing with families early in the donation process.“I tell the nurses at the hospital, ‘you have tenpatients, I only have one. I can be here for thisfamily for whatever they need.’”

From PTCs to regional directors to corporateofficers, OneLegacy is exploring ways for hospi-tal development to improve service to donor fam-ilies, transplant recipients and hospital staff.

“Donation can help families regain hope andcontrol when there is a loss of a family mem-ber,” explained Tom Mone, CEO of OneLegacy.“By reorganizing and refocusing the HospitalServices department, we help hospitals identifyopportunities for donation sooner and assisthospitals in making the opportunity to donateavailable to more families.”

Through the 1990s, hospital developmentfocused on compliance, ensuring that hospitals

OneLegacy staff and Ambassadorsjoined transplant recipients, donor fami-lies and the community at the inspiringand emotional 2nd Annual Gift of LifeRun/Walk on April 17th at Cal StateFullerton. Approximately 1,500 partici-

pants braved early morning rain to run, walk, contemplate and enjoy a spiritedcommunity festival.

Highlighting the moving opening cer-emony were Anaheim Angels shortstopDavid Eckstein, catcher Jose Molina andbroadcast announcer Rex Hudler.

Eckstein related his personal con-nection to donation: two brothersand a sister, each of whom hasreceived a kidney transplant. Healso spoke passionately about hisfather, who is currently on dialy-sis awaiting a kidney transplant.

“Because someone is willingto sign their organ donor card,

they can go on living through someoneelse,” said Eckstein to those gathered.“God never gives you anything you can’thandle,” he continued, “but it becomes achallenge and it helps keep everything inperspective.”

Hudler was moved by the donor cere-mony, which climaxed in the release ofdoves by donor families. He sent off theparticipants with a clarion call: “Run,walk and with each step you take, makesure you smile and thank your God foryour life and the opportunity to share itwith others.”

Just prior to the start of the race, 1,100green balloons were released to representthe number of organs transplanted in theyear 2003. OneLegacy also revealed thework-in-progress inaugural OrangeCounty Bridging Lives Quilt. Those pres-

Organ donors and their families throughout OneLegacy’sseven-county region were honored at donor recognition cer-emonies held at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach, UCLA’sCovel Commons and Loma Linda University’s Wong KerleeInternational Conference Center.

The theme of the ceremonies, Fields of Gold, wasinspired by the recording of Sting’s song of the same nameby the late Eva Cassidy.

“By all accounts, families found the events to be anuplifting and meaningful tribute to their loved ones,” saidJeff Fleming, Manager of Family Services for OneLegacy.

Altogether, more than one thousand donor family mem-bers honored their loved ones at the three ceremonies.

(1) Heart recipient Terry Harrington, the “voice” of Lisa Simpson’s sax on“The Simpsons,” opened each cere-mony with a rendition of “Fields ofGold.” (2) The release of birds at theconclusion of each event was a high-light for donor families. (3) Reg Green, donor father and author of TheNicholas Effect, spoke at UCLA. (4)Each family received a Life Bridges Pinand Pendant set. had updated contracts with and report-ed all deaths to OneLegacy. Hospitalaccount executives (HAEs) wereresponsible for monitoring hospitalperformance indicators. Before thattime the responsibility for hospitaldevelopment fell to the PTCs, whoconducted hospital education alongwith donor management and approach-ing families.

As of the beginning of the year,OneLegacy’s shift in hospital develop-ment philosophy was codified byrechristening HAEs as “hospital servicecoordinators” (HSCs). The team is ledby Karen Libs, Hospital ServicesDirector, who noted that 75% of donorscome from only 37 of the 224 hospitalswithin OneLegacy’s service area.

“We will focus on these hospitals tomaximize the donation rate, transplantmore organs and narrow the gapbetween donors and recipients,” saidLibs. The Organ DonationBreakthrough Collaborative initiatedby HHS Secretary Tommy G.Thompsonhasbeenamajorcatalyst forpartneringwithhospitals.

OneLegacy’s evolution follows anational trend in hospital service: helpinghospital staff feel comfortable with dona-tion and seeing the good that donation canprovide both to a family in crisis and tohospital staff.

“I see a tremendous opportunity for usto be on site initially to improve how theprocess works and for hospitals to see usin a more interactive role,” says RamonaLeinen-Duren, an HSC for the South LosAngeles region. The hope of this model isto help hospitals rely more fully and com-fortably on OneLegacy in serving theirfamilies.

In practice, a switch from an emphasison compliance to hospital service means:

• increases in the number of earlyreferrals so that OneLegacy can supportfamilies earlier in the donation process.

• greater service to the families byacting as extenders to hospital staff whomay not have time to work with families.

• early integration of OneLegacy staffinto end-of-life planning. OneLegacy cre-ates a “mini-care” plan to evaluate thepatient, gather information and collaboratewith physicians on this plan.

• enhanced relationship with physi-cians, whose early buy-in and collabo-ration are key to moving the donationprocess forward.

• HSCs, acting as part of a full-serv-ice team, will be available to respondto donor referrals and trained to workwith families to help them addressend-of-life issues.

To support the transition from HAEto HSC, the coordinators have under-gone hundreds of hours of focusedtraining on advanced hospital servicesservice excellence, family support andclinical assessment.

“The training has brought ourdepartment closer together.” saysRamona, “As a department we have astronger voice within the company. We’re in a good place.”

Each HSC will concentrate energyon three to five top hospitals in theirregion, allowing more time to buildlasting and layered relationships. PTCswill resume some of their historic hos-pital development roles by servicingsmaller hospitals that need less fre-quent visits.

Mone, who championed this changeto a service model, is philosophical aboutthe need for change. “Because donation isdeeply personal,” he said, “we need tohave personal relationships not just withthe families, but with the hospital as well.”

Float to Focus on How theGift of Life Saves Livesand Strengthens Families

A nationwide partnership of organiza-tions united to inspire all people to“Donate Life” through organ and tissuedonation unveiled its 2005 Rose Parade®

float design today at the Association ofOrgan Procurement Organizations(AOPO) meeting in Chicago. The newfloat follows the highly successful launchlast year of a nationwide effort to raiseawareness and support of donation as aparticipant in America’s New YearCelebration.®

Carrying the theme Many Families,One Gift, the Donate Life Rose Parade

float will feature 23 riders—representingliving donors, donor family members andtransplant recipients—all enjoying asunny day in the park surrounded by sym-bols of life: a three-tiered water fountain,a garden bridge, an ornate gazebo, and asturdy tree. Riders include a special hon-orary family plus 10 pairs of float riderswho, be they directly related or sharing aclose bond, illustrate how families arestrengthened through the power of organand tissue donation and transplantation.

The riders will hail from communitiesthroughout the nation, includingCalifornia, Colorado, Florida, Illinois,Michigan, New Jersey, New York, NorthCarolina and Oklahoma.

“Family is the core of the celebrationof life, and the gift of organ and tissuedonation saves, enhances and strengthensthe lives of hundreds of thousands of indi-viduals and their loved ones every year,”said Bryan Stewart, chairman of theDonate Life Rose Parade Float organizingcommittee and director of communica-tions for OneLegacy, the transplant donornetwork serving Southern California.

The Donate Life float promises tobring a distinct dimension to theTournament of Roses Parade theme,

Celebrate Family. “Donation is acelebration for not only thosewhose health and families arerenewed by organ or tissue trans-plantation, but also for donor fam-ilies who honor their loved ones’legacies of caring and generosity,”said Stewart.

Award-winning float builderPhoenix Decorating Co. designedthe new float. “We're delighted toagain join this special communityas a contributing partner of theDonate Life float,” said BillLofthouse, president of PhoenixDecorating. “As a parade partici-pant, the donation and transplanta-

tion community brings tremendous ener-gy and meaning to the parade as theyshare their inspiring stories of courageand compassion in the face of adversity.”

Spearheaded by OneLegacy, the 2005float is supported by dozens of officialpartners from across the nation, includingorgan and tissue recovery organizations,for-profit contributors, transplant centersand transplant recipient organizations.

commented.

In addition to honoring Lesley andTory, OneLegacy staffed an informationbooth at the event; speaking to attendeesabout the importance of organ and tissuedonation. “35 percent of patients awaitingkidney transplants are African American,”said Sherika Harris, CommunicationCenter Triage Specialist I. “Many in mycommunity don’t know that.”

heartbeat at Kari’s appointment with herdoctor the morning of April 7. Thatevening, they began driving to Appleton,Wis. where they planned to shop for babyitems. They never got there.

On a snow-covered portion of thehighway, an oncoming driver lost controlof his pickup truck, crossed the centerline, and crashed into the Barlaments’ car.Eric died at the scene with multipleinjuries. Although Kari was injured in thecrash, miraculously both she and herunborn baby survived.

There was one bright spot amid thetragedy that struck this young couple. Erichad made the commitment to be an organand tissue donor by signing his driver’slicense, and shared his wishes with his fam-ily. He had even encouraged Kari—whohad not given it any serious thought—tomake the decision and choose donation.

Kari consented to donation of Eric’s tis-sue—bone, heart valves and veins—to saveand improve the lives of others. Says Kari,“Eric believed it was our duty to help oth-ers when we died and no longer needed ourbody. Just as in life, he thought we neededto help those who needed it. When the deci-sion had to be made about organ and tissuedonation, it was easy because it was some-thing that had been already discussed.”

Kari’s young life has been foreverchanged with the loss of her husband, butshe finds comfort in knowing he will live onin those who received his tissue. He will alsolive on in his daughter, born on September5th, Eric’s birthday. Her name is Erica.

This December, we look forward to wel-coming back Kari, a 2004 float rider andnow a Donate Life Rose Parade FloatCommittee member, back to Pasadena.Accompanied by her mother and daughterErica, She will help us decorate the 2005Donate Life float in honor of her husband.
