ln the sacrament of baptism, we stress that the person is no longer bound by

original sin; rather, despite still retaining the wounds caused by original sin,

he or she becomes free to live as a child of God, embracing the will of God

through discipleship in Jesus Christ. We're free to live not as the world

dictates, but as those who know, love, and serve God in this world and look

forward to being with him in the next.

Adults who go through the Rite of Christian lnitiation of Adults have time

to reflect on the conversion necessary for such transformation, but for many

of us, the sig-nificance of our baptism as infants gets lost in the long years

between childhood and adulthood. We stop being mindful of the power ofgrace and the necessity of turning our lives over to God regardless of the

work we do or the community we belong to.We may have wondered why Jesus pre-sented himself for baptism. Wasn't

he God, born without sin? Of course, the answer is yes. But Jesus came to his

baptism as a public witness of the need to turn over our lives to God. Like us

in all things, Jesus approached John for the ritual washing that signaled a

new beginning. lt was a sign for us and a wonderful way to mark the

beginning of his ministry.Matthew records that he heard the voice of God saying, "This is my beloved

Son." ln baptism, God welcomes all of us as beloved children. out of

gratitude and praise, we, in turn, follow Jesus-

And so we submit our lives to God-pro-claiming justice, doing good, and

loving God and others as we love ourselves.Mary Katharine Deeley su ndayb u lleti n @ li g uori -o rg

de ar PAD Rf,

O I wu taught thatJesus was born without originat sin. Since the

wlnle point of baptkm is to take away original sin, whry didJohnneed to baptkeJesus?

A-fL Jesus' baptism and ours are two different realities. You're right: Jesus was sinless; original sin never touchedhim. Jesus' baptism was ectually the baptism ofJohn. TheCatechism of tlu Catlwlic Church quotes Luke 3:3 to teach us

that John's baptism was "a baptism of repentance for theforgiveness of sins" (535). It was more like receiving ashes

on fuh'Wednesday than the secrement of baptism you andI received.

The sacrament of baptism removes original sin byjoining us to the sinless lift ofJesus. Life in him is death toall sin, especially original sin. '1ffe were indeed buriedwith him through baptism into death, so that, just as

Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father,we too might live in newness of life" (Romans 6:4).

'What, then, was the point ofJohn's baptizing Jesus? Itwes to e:press Jesus' oneness with all the people whoconfessed their sinfulness by seekingJohn's baptism. Jesuswas saying by his baptism that he was one of them and oneof us, sinners all. This humiliry so pleased his Father that a

voice was heard from heaven: 'You are my beloved Son;with you I am well pleased" (Mark t:11). And it has also

seved us by making us children of God inJesus, the Son ofGod. F r. Joln Hatnrogue, C S sR surulaybulletin@liguoi,org
