Roman Towns
Roman Towns (1)
Today we will learn about:Roman towns and cities.● The type and names of buildings in Roman
towns and what they were used for.● We will also learn about the history of Rome
from the Kingdom of Rome, to the Republic and the Empire.
Roman Towns (2)
● In all the lands that they conquered the Romans built towns that they could feel at home in.
● The Romans liked things to be well organised and orderly.
● When they conquered Greek cities, they noticed that the streets were laid out in a criss-cross pattern called a grid.
Roman Towns (3)
● Roman towns were designed in the form of a grid.
● The streets were built at right angles to each other and parallel with one of the two main roads.
● The width of the street depended on how important it was.

Roman Baths● A warm one called the tepidarium.● A hot one called the caldarium.● A big cold bath called the frigidarium to swim
in to cool off after being in the hot baths.

Rich Romans had slaves who would cleaning themselves by having their rub them all over with perfumed oil and then scrape it off with a knife called a strigil.
The Amphitheatre
● The amphitheatre was an open-air entertainment venue in Roman towns and cities.

The TheatreA Roman theatre was used to stage plays and games just like today.
Town Walls
The Romans built walls around their towns and cities to keep them safe.
Roman Temples
The Romans built temples to make sacrifices to their gods. Many temples were to honour army generals' victory in war as well as the emperors.

● The Kingdom of Rome 753 BC - 509 BC
● The Roman of Republic 509 BC - 27 BC
● The Empire of Rome 27 BC - 476 BC
The Kingdom of Rome
● The Kingdom of Rome was supposedly founded by Romulus but this might not be true as we don't have any evidence.
● Romulus had an army but he had no women for his soldiers to marry so he raided a neighbouring village and stole all the women!
The Roman Republic● The Roman Republic voted people into
government just like we do today but only Roman citizens could vote. Women, slaves, foreigners and lots of poor people couldn't vote.
● Rome became a republic when they deposed their king, Tarquin.
The Roman Empire● The Roman Empire
conquered a lot of land in Europe, Northern Africa and the Near East.
● The first Emperor was Augustus which means majestic in Latin.
● The Empire was split in two in 476 AD but the Eastern half of the Empire lasted until 1453 AD.
