The Alexander Collection The Alexander Centre The Alexander Centre
is a Community Interest Company (CIC) and was established in 2010
with the aim of maintaining and developing Gatefield House in
Faversham (now renamed the Alexander Centre) as a cultural and
community centre for all the people of Faversham, and the
surrounding villages. This large Grade II Listed building (circa
1860) was originally built as a family home but from 1943 was used
as the Faversham Town Hall and Council Offices. By 2010 the
building had become too costly for the Borough Council to maintain
and The Alexander Centre CIC took it over that year to operate the
building for the local community on a commercial but not-for-
profit basis; leasing office space and hiring out rooms and the
main hall as a venue for a wide range of community events. Art in
The Alexander Centre Since 2010 The Alexander Centre CIC has made
significant progress building up income and carefully investing in
and restoring this historic and prestigious building in the heart
of Faversham. It was apparent when the public rooms were restored
that the walls could also become an asset to the community if we
could use them to display and showcase modern art; so the idea of
The Alexander Collection was conceived. From the start The
Alexander Collection was devised as a win-win opportunity for all
concerned; for professional artists, by offering them a year-long
showcase for their work at no cost to themselves; for a local
community based art gallery, providing additional display and
gallery space and for The Alexander Centre, benefiting from works
of art on our walls that we could otherwise not afford, to enhance
our visitor experience. 2017 will be the third season of the
Collection, each year to date we have displayed work of at least 3
professional artists in the ground floor public rooms.
The Alexander Collection - Our Vision Now that the Alexander
Collection has been established our vision is:
“To showcase art by local professional artists in surroundings that
enhance both their work and the building, such that it becomes The
event that artists aspire to participate in”. Throughout 2017 we
will present the third Season of The Alexander Collection and
continue to work towards meeting our Vision by; • identifying and
appointing a ‘Patron’ and a number of ‘Friends of The Alexander
Collection’ with professional backgrounds of working in and
promoting the arts, who will provide some strategic guidance to the
evolution of The Alexander Collection. • recruiting a broad based
‘Selection Panel’ with a range of skills and a background of
working in the arts, to select the work to be displayed each year.
• seeking the recognition of local and national arts’ institutes to
give their support to our vision for The Alexander Collection. •
reserving a section of the exhibition each year for emerging and
inspiring new local young artists.

Josephine Harvatt
Since graduating in 1996 with a B.A. in Fine Art, Josephine has
sold and exhibited her work both nationally and internationally.
She has also participated in various public art projects including
a residency at The Beaney Museum and Art Gallery, a mural for
Foyles bookshop in London, and a yacht sail design for White Horses
of Whitstable. Josephine finds inspiration in the landscapes and
townscapes of Britain, and her influences range from Klee and
Hunderwasser to folk art and textile works. Her paintings form an
ongoing exploration of the use of colour and mark making; her
overarching aim is to create harmonies of colour and balances of
form that intrigue the eye and cheer the heart.

Moira Hyde
Moira is a practising artist based in Faversham. She trained in
languages and administration but, while studying, developed an
interest in creativity. She was involved in the formation of a
community arts project in the Medway Towns (Arts in Medway, renamed
Spiral Arts), later becoming Director of the organisation. When
Spiral Arts ceased operations, Moira decided to pursue her own
creativity, particularly in the fields of painting, writing and
photography. Her visual artwork is characterised by vibrant use of
colour and bold shapes, forming compositions that trigger the
imagination and provide a space for contemplation. She uses oils
for her larger paintings and mixed media including acrylics,
pencils, pens and printing inks for smaller pieces.

Estelle Jourd
Estelle’s work is inspired by the sea and sky of the North Kent
coast where she has lived most of her life. As a sailor she has
experienced at first hand the sea, it’s changing moods and seasons.
Inspired by her emotional response to the elements she paints
intuitively in her studio from experience and memories. Working on
wood or canvas with a palette knife the paintings evolve over a
period of time, building layers of paint until the history of marks
and colours create the desired texture and form. Estelle exhibits
extensively locally and has shown her work in London, Bristol,
Edinburgh and Cornwall. Estelle lives in Seasalter.

Angela Rumble
Angela studied Fine Art to MA level at UCA in Canterbury. She
currently combines time in the studio with her first career as a
dentist. The countryside, in particular the woods, has long been a
source of solace and respite from the stresses of life. Working in
oils from her own photographs which are altered and manipulated to
accentuate the intricacies of the natural world and which may
include unexpected man-made structures that she happens upon.
Fragments of the landscape are broken down into more abstract
elements which are worked on in the paintings to give obsessive and
sometimes confusing detail which hovers between the abstract and
the figurative. Some unnatural colour may creep in, referring both
to technology and to the solarisation of pinhole camera images. The
paintings work on a filigree of branches that inflect a sense of
the unnerving – a labyrinth in which to explore and get lost.

Sarah Stokes
Sarah is a musical artist who paints in an intuitive and
improvisatory fashion. In her late thirties she reached a
crossroads and through SGI Buddhist practice, found the courage and
realised she was an artist. Painting is one way to explore and
enable Sarah to make sense of whatever is going on in her life...
distilled through her senses and life states... expressed with
colour and energy. There is a freshness about the work which is a
freeing and joyful process, sometimes evolving into stories - or
freescapes... telling a story to the viewer. Sarah usually works
with charcoal, oil, acrylic and ink. She also loves the apparent
randomness of abstract photos, which are being developed. She is
working on songs and a musical piece, ‘finding a voice’. Currently
living in Ramsgate, Sarah has mainly exhibited in the South of
England and sold work nationally and internationally.
