The Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA) recently conducted a

survey to gain insight into the purchasingdecisions of automotive repair profession-als. The association’s 2013 Digital Tool &Equipment Purchasing Trends report exploresuse of the Internet when purchasing newtools and equipment. Some TechShop read-ers were asked to complete this survey, andif you did, we appreciate your input. Most respondents said they used the Inter-

net more for researching information andless for the actual purchasing of tools orequipment, with the most online researchgoing into tools with prices over $100. In AAIA’s report, product warranty was

rated by both tool and equipment purchasers as themost influential factor in their purchasing decisions. To appease buyers’ warranty worries, some toolcompanies now offer apps and online catalogs whereeven if you buy the tool online, you’ll receive it fromyour local distributor, with the warranty and cus-tomer service that is important to you. According to the report, your mobile vendors contin-

ue to be the most frequently used suppliers for tooland equipment purchases. You should be able to de-pend on your local tool truck driver for information onthe tools and equipment you’re interested in buying. The TechShop team recently returned from a batch of

tool shows, (see more on the Matco Tools Expo andthe Mac Tools Tool Fair on page 30), and these com-panies do an excellent job at training their distribu-tors on the new tools they have on their trucks.Every year that we attend these shows, the tool com-panies seem to do more and more to educate the dis-tributors and to bring you the best tools to help youdo your job more efficiently. And we want to bring you more of that information

you’re looking for. Both of our feature articles thisissue pertain to the benefits of having the rightequipment and tools to diagnose and service yourcustomers’ vehicles. In Pulling Codes, Carlton Banksdiscusses how two different scan tools can have twodifferent results on the same vehicle. Mike DuBoisdelves into the benefits of new refrigerant recoverymachines. And the rest of TechShop — the magazine, the website, and our Facebook and Twitter pages —is here to keep you informed and up-to-date on whatyou need to know before you buy. Our subject vehicle is taken to a local re-pair facility to be evaluated. The first

step there is to confirm the no communica-tion issue. The technician uses a Tech 2 scantool to access data and the scan tool is ableto communicate with the Tahoe without aproblem. So, he calls the EPA test facility toreport that the vehicle does not have a com-munication problem. The state responds ina very pleasant manner and advises thetech that the vehicle must communicatewith their equipment in order to pass theemissions test. It’s interesting to note at thistime that the state communicates on ageneric level. The tech takes out his genericscan tool and finds that the vehicle does notcommunicate with it. The problem has beenconfirmed. The first step in our diagnosis is to review

schematics for the communication lines. Figure 1denotes the circuitry. The PCM is denoted in Figure 2 on page 8. Now

For this month’s Pulling Codescase, we will attempt to providea plan of attack for communica-tion issues on General Motorsproducts with the Class 2Protocol. Our diagnostic journey begins

with a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe. Thisvehicle was tested at the EPA testfacility in our area and it was de-termined that there is no commu-nication with the PCM.

we have a complete picture ofwhat our testing will entail. Acomb device will be removed outof the splice pack (Figure 3 onpage 10) to take all of the mod-ules on the schematic offline mo-mentarily. The modules will thenbe placed back online one by one.A lab scope is placed on the

data line to view the quality ofthe signal. A jumper wire will beused to place each module backonline one by one to view the se-rial data quality for each one. Data-bussing and multiplexingcan be complex and aggravat-ing, but F.R.E.D. (Frustrating,Ridiculous, Electronic Devices)can help solve the mysterybehind it. In this programfrom AVI (LBT 73), Dave Hobbsbrings his 30+ years of experi-ence to show you how theelectronic modules communi-cate with each other and helpyou tackle this tough issue andsave diagnostic time.Dave uses hands-on demon-

strations with the Snap-onMT2500, the Vetronix Tech 2,and the Mastertech to explaindata bus layouts, voltages, wiring and baud rates. He tellsyou what to do when yourscan tool says “no data” or itsdisplay flashes. Dave explainsthe difference between a“UART data bus” and a “class2 data bus” and the differencebetween loop and star config-urations.

F.R.E.D. Takes the Bus • How to “ping” a module to find out if it is active;

• Explains terms like “binary” and “hexadecimal”; and • Case studies on no-start and no-communication issues.Runtime: 75 minutes, Manual IncludedVisit www.auto-video.com/fred-takes-p-18.html to order.

to 5.8 volts, this was below thethreshold needed in order forproper communication to takeplace on this vehicle. The bad pat-tern occurred on the circuitry forthe SDM or sensing and diagnos-tic module (airbag module). Theairbag module circuitry was load-ing the circuit to this value, caus-ing the PCM not to communicatewith the generic scan tool. The pinfor the airbag module was takenoff the bus and generic communi-cation was restored. The vehicle then passed the

emissions test, and the repair shopwas advised to repair the airbagcircuit. This Pulling Codes case is now

Buying a new refrigerant recovery/recycle/recharge machine can be a bit overwhelming.

The item is expensive and complicated, and thereare a lot of choices out there. Each manufacturer hasa compelling story to tell about why its machine isthe only logical choice. Hopefully the followingarticle will help you make a good decision for yourparticular needs.I think it’s important to note that like most things in

life, every choice is a bit of a compromise. RRR ma-chines are as varied in their design and configurationas the vehicles you work on every day. No oneknows better than you that there isn’t one vehiclethat is perfect for every application. Take for instancethat beautiful HD pickup truck with the big V8 gasengine or maybe a stout diesel engine. That truck isan awesome hauling machine. If the customer needsto carry a big load or pull a large trailer, it’s the per-fect choice. However, if the need is a nimble vehiclethat is adept in heavy urban traffic and small, con-gested areas, well, then it may not be the best choice.Refrigerant recovery machines are much like the

above example. You may find the controls of onemachine to be much more to your liking than

another. Perhaps the display on one is easierfor you to read. The smallest thing can be im-

portant to you while the next technician oruser may find that issue to be a non-issue.

Before we jump into the things tolook for when buying a machine,

I want to talk a bit about yourrole in selecting new equip-

ment. Thismagazine

is

geared toward the men and women who make theirlivings turning wrenches. You keep the countrymoving by fixing the things that many of us cannot.(Thank you!) So, you may be asking yourself whydo I care about this, I am not the one who is goingto buy the machine. What a great question, thanksfor asking! First of all, some of you reading this arti-cle wear all the hats at your shop. You greet the cus-tomer, diagnose the problem, order the parts, fix thevehicle, collect the payment, pay the bills, and inyour spare time, you buy new equipment. Wow! Ifthat describes you, this article is definitely for you. For those of you who don’t buy the machine, you

still may want to hang in there with me, and here iswhy: At the end of the day, it’s you who is going tolive with whatever decision the boss makes. If themachine can’t do what you need it to do, it will costyou time and money. Another great reason to readon is that if your boss-owner is smart, they knowenough to pay attention to the technicians whowork for them.So let’s get to it! Here are the things that I recom-

mend when deciding what refrigerant RRR equip-ment your shopneeds.

1. Volume — Howbig is your shop? How many vehicleswill you see a daywhen the thermome-ter hits 90°? If you’re

a one-bay shop, then obviously one machine is plenty. The slowest machine out there may be fine for yourneeds. If you’re a high-volume shop, even the speedi-est machine may not be able to keep up. So do yourhomework; look back over last year’s business and geta number in your head. How many vehicles a day?

2. Vehicle Types — This one is easy enough. Areyou a general service facility? Do you only service carsand light trucks? Do you work on limos? Do youwork on dual system SUVs that have larger capacitysystems?

3. Refrigerant Types — This is a hot button rightnow in the industry and probably the most commonreason people are considering buying a new machine. There have been reams of paper and gazillions of gi-gabytes of memory used up talking about the newestrefrigerant and will they or won’t they implement it in

cars. As of this writing, the best answer is: whoknows? For the last two years we’ve watched this drama un-

fold and change on a daily basis. R-1234yf was going tobe the silver bullet that stopped the destruction of theozone layer. The OEMs all held hands and said “OK!We are on board with this new refrigerant.” The wheelsstarted turning, new systems, equipment, protocols forhandling, new plants were developed everything washumming along. Like many times, the newest technolo-gy was implemented first in the high-end vehicles;mostly European and one domestic maker. Whoops!Along comes a new report out of left field: “It’s danger-ous,” a major OEM says. “Not in our cars, not going touse it!” (Talk about the wheels coming off the bus!)What does all this mean to the average shop owner

trying to make a good decision? My best answer is:maybe nothing! Here’s why I say that: even if the car-makers play nice and agree to move forward with

R-1234yf, it may be years beforeyou see one in your bay. Of course, for dealer technicians it could besooner, but the reality is that theOEM is going to decide what ma-chine you use anyway, good orbad.Another reality is that there are

millions of cars on the road todaywith R-134a on board. Those arethe cars that matter to the vast ma-jority of you reading this article. In conclusion on this point, ask

your supplier about multiple re-frigerants, and what their strategyis for R-1234yf.

4. Service Time — This one iseasy. How long will it take fromhook up to disconnect on a stan-dard mid-size vehicle? This in-cludes recovery, evacuation, pres-sure testing and recharge. What isthe flow rate to recharge a vehicle? These are easy questions that yourequipment seller should be able toanswer.

5. Capacity — How much re-frigerant can the machine hold? This includes new virgin refriger-ant as well as recovered material.Ask about internal versus externaltanks and their volumes.

6. Automation — How manytimes must you return to the ma-chine to turn a knob, flip a switch, accept a reading, etc.? Time is theenemy, fewer interruptions meansmore money!

7. Information — Does the ma-chine have a database for capaci-ties, charging locations and othercritical information?

8. Maintenance — Does themachine offer alarms or remindersabout changing the filters? Howare the filters changed? Does yourseller stock the filters?

9. Set-up and Training —Does the seller offer free set up andtraining on the equipment? This isa must and a deal breaker formany.

10. Plumbing — How does themachine control the flow of refrig-erant? There are two main meth-ods: solenoids and electro-mechani-cal valves. Both of these have prosand cons. In most cases, solenoids

are field serviceable. Some valve controls mayhave to go to a service facility in the event offailure. Ask about construction. This can affectserviceability and speed.

11. Tech Support — Is there a toll-free sup-port line with knowledgeable help? Ask aroundregarding what kind of experiences other usershave had working with the suppliers. Bad serv-ice can also be a death sentence. In the middle ofJuly, you can’t afford to be on the phone forhours hunting down help for a broken machine.

12. Service Provider — Ask who works onthe machines in your area. Call them! Ask ques-tions. What breaks? How long to fix? Wouldthey buy the machine you are considering?

13. Cost — This is almost always the lastthing I list. You’re buying a piece of equipmentto make a living with. Is saving a few dollars re-ally the best decision? There is a popular quote:“The bitterness of poor quality quickly ruins thesweetness of a great deal.”

I hope that some of these thoughts will help youmake a better, more informed decision when pur-chasing your new refrigerant RRR equipment. TS

Leak Detection Dye

1. Operate the vehicle for aminimum of 20 minutes withthe compressor running to cir-culate the leak detection dyethroughout the air condition-ing system. For passive or in-termittent leaks, it may takelonger than 20 minutes for thedye to find the leak and be vis-ible during the inspection.2. Use an ultraviolet (UV)

lamp and yellow glasses.3. Move the UV lamp across

all refrigerant components ofthe A/C system, paying specialattention to line fittings andjoints.4. When a refrigerant leak is

detected, evacuate refrigerantfrom the system and make the necessary repair.5. After the repair is performed, thoroughly clean

the dye from the repair area, tools and your hands, using refrigerant leak detection dye cleaner and aclean shop towel.6. Operate the A/C system after the repair and

check all functions.7. Re-inspect to be certain other refrigerant leaks

are not present.• Do look for dye at all refrigerant system connec-

tions made by the assembly plant, access valveswith caps in place, hose couplings, line-mountedswitch sensors and other visible components of thesystem. Use of a UV lamp and yellow glasses is required to fluoresce the dye.Reason: This verifies that all areas of the system are

free of leaks.

• Do use a clean cloth and dye cleaner to removeall traces of dye on every joint that was opened, onall surfaces where dye is present and from handsand tools. Use the UV lamp to ensure it is gone.Reason: It is important that after a leak has been re-

paired that all the dye is removed so that if anotherleak develops or if an air conditioning performanceproblem occurs at a later time, the technician doesnot see a false positive identification of a leak site.

Electronic Leak Detection • Do leak-test all refrigerant system connections

made by the assembly plant; access valves with capsin place, hose couplings and line-mounted switchsensors.Reason: This verifies that all areas of the system are

free of leaks.

• Do ensure the engine compartment is well ventilat-ed prior to leak checking, but not during the leak test.Reason: To eliminate any possible pockets of refriger-

ant or other detectable gas, so that no false leaks arefound. Air movement during the leak test must beminimal so the detector, which functions by drawingin a small amount of air at the probe tip, can operateproperly.• Do leak test the refrigerant system prior to initial

engine start and compressor engagement.Reason: Data shows that more system leaks are detect-

ed prior to compressor engagement. If the compressoris run prior to leak detection, it will circulate compres-sor oil throughout the system and will mask systemleaks. Leaks can reappear after a period of system

inactivity when the lubricant masking them recedes.• Do maintain a service log to ensure proper calibra-

tion for each leak detector.Reason: Prevents equipment down time. Leak detec-

tors have to be properly maintained and calibrated perthe manufacturer’s instructions.• Do not leak-test the refrigerant system with the

engine running.Reason: Gases and fumes generated with the engine

running can make the leak detector react and givefalse signals. Also, if the air conditioner is running, parts of the system are at higher pressures, and partsare at lower pressures than required for the test, mak-ing the test inconsistent. Courtesy of Delphi Product & Service Solutions. TS

A classic sign of a head gasketproblem is when the vehicle isblowing white smoke from thetailpipe. This indicates thatwater/coolant is entering the com-bustion chamber and is then burntoff as steam through the exhaust. The white “smoke” is water vaporas the steam condenses when ithits the colder atmosphere. With older vehicles, the owner’s

budget or the value of the vehiclemeans a full head gasket repair issimply not a viable option, yet the

owner needs to keep the vehicle onthe road. In this case, a dedicatedhead gasket sealant could be aneconomical solution.K-Seal’s Ceramic formulas offer
