IntroductionIntroduction In the 1st grade core it is

important for students to be provided with many opportunities to be in an environment that is rich with literacy. They need many opportunities to be read to and to read independently. They need practice in order to become proficient readers, writers and speakers.

Students Using the

Technology To integrate technology into reading development I had

my class use the computers in the school lab to practice reading and speaking.

I taught a reading lesson to my guided reading group about looking for word similarities and sound substitutions in words and then they practiced identifying these literacy components on the reading programs while using the computer programs starfall.com and Waterford.

Technology!

Technology! The students were able

to read short stories on the computers and then they were able to read the story back to the computer through the microphone.

This enabled them to practice reading and then practice their oral abilities.

This lesson went well because the students were able to implement what they were learning in the classroom. They were given instruction, then guided practice, and then independent practiceStarfall.com is a very interactive and fun website for students to use. This was a great literacy tool!

I think performing some literacy instruction in the computer lab could have been effective. The students could have followed along as I demonstrated. This could lessen the amount of questions.

Principles of Effective Technology Integration

Principles of Effective Technology Integration Student Use of Technology: The students were able to

use the computers and this allowed them to be active participants in the learning.

Technology Use is Essential: Using computers added to the learning and the activities because it was convenient and effective.

Focus on Learning Task: Using technology helped the children directly practice word decoding strategies and reading practices after being instructed about them. The computers are very helpful in achieving the learning objective.

Added Value: This lesson could be done without technology but the technology just adds a different learning style. The technology helps the students practice their literacy skills.
