Soon, we will be in need of fosters for nursing liers or kiens too young to be placed on our adopon floor when they arrive. Last year alone, approximately 200 kiens, including nursing liers, were saved by being placed into our foster program. Since we recently started our managed intakes, we know in advance when liers will be arriving and can hopefully find fosters before they come through our shelter doors. I know first hand that fostering can be a rewarding experience. I’ll never forget the me my husband and I fostered our first lier of three kiens. The kiens were barely a month old and came in on a day I was working. I remember inially how fragile and skish they were. Their ny eyes looked up at me with uncertainty. As it turned out, our foster program was filled to the max, and these lile ones were sll waing on their chance. It was then that I decided to be their foster. The kiens were named “Sanyo,” “L.G.” and “Apple.” *connued on next page Kitten Season is Here!

Kitten Season has arrived! Soon,we will be in need of fosters for nursing litters or kittens too young to be placed on our adoption floor when they arrive. Last year alone, approximately 200 kittens, including nursing litters, were saved by being placed into our foster program. Since we recently started our managed intakes, we know in advance when litters will be arriving and can hopefully find fosters before they come through our shelter doors.

I know first hand that fostering

can be a rewarding experience. I’ll never forget the time my husband and I fostered our first litter of three kittens. The kittens were barely a month old and came in on a day I was working. I remember initially how fragile and skittish they were. Their tiny eyes looked up at me with uncertainty. As it turned out, our foster program was filled to the max, and these little ones were still waiting on their chance. It was then that I decided to be their foster. The kittens were named “Sanyo,” “L.G.” and “Apple.”

OKyno “King”Adopted a year ago, here is Kyno with his mom celebrating their one year anniversary.

continued...They were less than a pound each the day I took them home. Our goal was to get to at least two pounds before they came back to be adopted.

And, so our month long journey began. It was amazing to see them grow healthier and stronger each day. They no longer were shy at all. They looked forward to seeing us when we came home from work and would meow as soon as we walked through the door. They were playful and made us laugh at their antics, but they were also sweet “lap-cats” that loved to cuddle.

The day came when we knew in our hearts they were ready. It was bittersweet when our foster time concluded, but we knew the greatest reward was yet to come when they received their forever homes.

We realized then the important role we had played. When I brought the kittens back to the shelter, they were healthy, happy, and friendly and were only there for a few days until they all were adopted. I was happy for them, and seeing the wonderful homes they found made everything worth it.

Here at the Humane Society we provide fosters with all the essentials they need. From cat food to pet carriers we make sure our foster volunteers are prepped for success. Although initially a lot of care and effort was required, I would not trade my experience as a foster and I hope others can know how rewarding fostering can be.

Monthly Tip Last month we discussed getting your pet micro-chipped, but another equally important way to make sure your pet makes it safely home if lost is through an ID tag. ID tags are usually the quickest way to get your pet returned to you. Not only are tags practical, but our tags look good too! We recommend having at least a name and phone number on the tag. Not everyone who finds a stray animal will think to have the pet scanned for a microchip, so having an ID tag is essential. We have ID tags for sale for as low as $5 and recently added a new HSGS tag design to our collection. Stop by to purchase your tag today! After your purchase, one of our staff memebers will engrave your tag for free!

Volunteer, Carolyn Tucker, taught two first grade classes from Bloomingdale elementary school on March 11. The students raised money for the shelter pets and practiced their learning of proper pet dental care and kindness to animals.
