• simple solutions often come out of necessity i.e. frequently damaged F/O cables

• P3 provide tactical data/voice links over copper cables: up to 20Mbs over 5Kms

• Simple and effective alternative to fibre-optics - without loss of functionality

Tactical Data Links Evolution- are we forgetting something -

Why Go Back to Copper?

Simple, cheap, effective and soldier friendly - no functionality loss

• Current Practice in Tactical LAN Deployment is to use Fibre-Optic Based Products

• Fibre is easily damaged and is impractical to repair in the field, bulky to store/transport

• Copper cables are simple & soldier friendly easy to roll out, retrieve. It is cheap and can be fixed – as easy as tying shoelaces!

• RADSL Technology allows fast transmission (up to 8 Mbs) over long distances of 3..7Kms

• P3/P1 are designed to overcome the fibre problem - using off the shelf technology

- with useful features- without loss of functionality

> Ideal for rapidly deployed Tactical LAN links

> Up to 20Mbs bandwidth over 5Kms

> hot backup when using 2 or more channels

> Common IP interfaces for varied applications video, encryption, D/A Sensors, etc.

> stand alone operation (battery to 8hrs)

> Field Telephone over the same copper link - works even when the data link is down

> VoIP - Network wide reach via IP addresses

> Variety of power sources (AC, DC, internal rechargable battery, generator, fuel cells etc.

Simple and Effective C3 LinksCosting up to 20 times less then FOC

• Australian Army initiated industry collaboration to develop a COTS based product• early functioning prototypes successfully trialed in ‘Crocodile West’ exercises - Tennant Creek• operationally proven in Timor L’Este with subsequent successful deployments AFG, Iraq, etc.• widely adopted for field deployed logistics (brigade level and below)• Price : COTS with mil spec features: ≤ 10 times cheaper then FOC equivalent

Units forward of theBMA use FLMS, theypass information to theBMA by HF, VHF or Disk

All units use SDSS, as their statutory record. FLMS is their fallback network database. FLMS transactions areapplied to SDSS when communications areregained.

Ch1 = Tx-HighCh2 = Tx-HighCh3 = Tx-High

- broadcasting data links to different locations- remote P3 channels are all set to Tx-Low- unique IP addresses must be set for VoIP & Telnet management

Extending data link further

P3 data links redundancy:- ‘Spanning Tree’ must be enabled on all P3s- takes up to a minute to ‘learn’ addresses and to start functioning- if one DON10 line is damaged, data is switched to another line

Typical Configurations

Page 7: Tactical Data Links - over DON10 or WD1/TT - Simple and Effective Alternative to Fibre Optics LANs and Information Sharing in Tactical Environment Australian.

Australian Defence School Of Signals - Setup

• unique IP addresses for all P3s

• ‘Spanning Tree’ (ring protection) must be enabled on all P3s – and takes approx 30 sec to learn the P3 network

• 3rd P3 transmission channel could be used to further extend the network (e.g. to a P1 or another P3)

Data Terminal (PC)- P3 provides Ethernet & voice extension over copper- 2 spare channels are available for further voice/data links

Optional WD1T link for redundancy

Data transfer example using COTS• P3 provides transparent Ethernet over copper to all remote P3s• using the NetMeeting application individual links are established by ‘calling’ remote P3 ‘IP’ address• spare channels can be used for links to other P3s or for redundancy

P3 provide simple and effective distribution of data for ‘fire solution’ systems on the existing DON10 links used for voice commands (e.g. TANOY).

Tunnels or Underground Data/Voice Extensions• fire-proof telemetry• air-quality monitoring• fan activation• alarm activation• emergency voice channels• gas, electricity conduits• Oil pipelines• Video/Audio Surveillance• (SCADA Upgrades)

ADF East Timor Operations : 13-Sep-2000World First : RADSL Modems Communications Over 7.8 Km copper

Secure LAN Extension link with effective speed of 1.2 Mbit/sec and 640Kbit/sec

Ship to Port (Side) LAN Extension : distances of up to 8Km optionally encrypted linksAdditional Applications : Video Conference, Data Logging, Remote Control, Sensors and others

Application Examples- high resolution video with remote pan/tilt/zoom controls of the camera- extending bomb disposal and NBCR monitoring and sensors to safer areas- use of serial cryptos with IPTube provides wider diversity of data traffic on existing P3 links (and eliminates the use of Wireline adapterts) Video Link Extensions

P3 with IP Camera- a ‘spare’ pair of eyes- data and a voice link- remotely accessible at any P3- MP or ‘crowd’ control
