About NID
The establishment of NID was a result of several forces, both global and local. The late 1950s saw a confl uence of these forces, and this time would be a signifi cant one for Indian culture and education. This was a time of reappraisal and reconstruction in a newly independent India. There was a search for the Indian identity across all aspects of life.
Based on the recommendations made in the India Report, the Government of India with the assistance of the Ford Foundation and the Sarabhai family established the National Institute of Industrial Design, as it was originally called as an autonomous all-India body in September 1961 at Ahmedabad. Gautam Sarabhai revived the philosophy of the Bauhaus design movement which was learning by doing. This unique curriculum and revolutionary educational philosophy remain part of NID to the present day.
Today the National Institute of Design is internationally acclaimed as one of the fi nest educational and research institutions for Industrial, Communication, Textile and IT Integrated (Experiential) Design. It is an autonomous institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India and is recognised by the Department of Scientifi c and Industrial Research, Government of India as a Scientifi c and Industrial Research Organisation. for the World a reality. NID’s graduates have made a mark in key sectors of commerce, industry and social development by taking role of catalysts and through design leadership.

Hubli, also called Hubballi, is an agglomerating city in the state of Karnataka, India, where it is the fastest growing city after the capital, Bangalore. Also known as “Chhota Mumbai”, it is the capital of North Karnataka and a commercial hub. The name Hubballi literally means “Flowering creeper” in Kannada. “Gandu Mettida Nadu” is Hubli. The twin cities of Hubli and Dharwad, collectively referred to as “Hubli-Dharwad”, is the second-largest conurbation in Karnataka after Bangalore in area and is second most populous city in Karnataka. While Dharwad is the administrative headquarters, the city of Hubli, situated about 20 km south-east of Dharwad, is the commercial centre and business hub of North Karnataka region. Crops like cotton and peanuts are grown aplenty in the surrounding rural agricultural areas, and Hubli is a major trading center for both commodities. It is also an important city for the Indian Railways, as it is the headquarters for South Western Railway Zone and the Hubli Railway Division. Hubli is a major railway junction in North Karnataka.
Rayara Hubli, also called ‘Eleya Purvada Halli’ or ‘Purballi’ was the old Hubli, where there is a Bhavani Shankara temple and Jaina basti. Under Vijayanagara Rayas, Rayara Hubli grew as a commercial centre, famous for trade in cotton, saltpetre and iron. Under the rule of the Adilshahis, the British opened a factory here. The factory was looted by Shivaji in 1673. The Mughals conquered Rayara Hubli and it was then placed under the governance of the Nawab of Savanur, who built a new extension named Majidpura. Later, trader Basappa Shettar built new Hubli around the Durgadabail (fort maidan) part of Rayara Hubli. Hubli’s famous Moorusavira Matha is claimed to have been established by a Sharana of Basaveshwara’s period. Hubli was conquered by the Marathas from the Nawab of Savanur in 1755-56. In the following years, Hubli was conquered by Hyder Ali, only to be recaptured by the Marathas in 1790. At this point in time the old town was administered by a person named Phadke under the Peshwas and the new town was under the administration of the Sangli Patwardhan. The British took Old Hubli from the Peshwas in 1817. The new town, with 47 other villages, was handed over to the British by the Sangli Patwardhan in lieu of subsidy in 1820. Later in 1880, the British started the Railway workshop and with this, Hubli came to be reckoned as an industrial centre in this part of India.Hubli is a prosperous handloom weaving centre and has a textile unit. The Bhavanishankar temple and Sri siddharodh swamy temple in Old Hubli and the impressive Chandramauleshwara/ Chaturlinga temple in Unakal are of Chalukyan times. Kundgol, 15 km south of Hubli, has the huge Shambhu Linga temple of Chalukyan times.

History of Machining & Common Terminologies
The precise meaning of the term machining has evolved over the past one and a half centuries as technology has advanced. In the 18th century, the word machinist simply meant a person who built or repaired machines. This person’s work was done mostly by hand, using processes such as the carving of wood and the hand-forging and hand-fi ling of metal. At the time, millwrights and builders of new kinds of engines (meaning, more or less, machines of any kind), such as James Watt or John Wilkinson, would fi t the defi nition.
The noun machine tool and the verb to machine (machined, machining) did not yet exist. Around the middle of the 19th century, the latter words were coined as the concepts that they described evolved into widespread existence. Therefore, during the Machine Age, machining referred to (what we today might call) the “traditional” machining processes, such as turning, boring, drilling, milling, broaching, sawing, shaping, planing, reaming, and tapping.
In these “traditional” or “conventional” machining processes, machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses, or others, are used with a sharp cutting tool to remove material to achieve a desired geometry. Since the advent of new technologies such as electrical discharge machining, electrochemical machining, electron beam machining, photochemical machining, and ultrasonic machining, the retronym “conventional machining” can be used to diff erentiate those classic technologies from the newer ones. In current usage, the term “machining” without qualifi cation usually implies the traditional machining processes.
Apart from other special
purpose machines ,most of
the Cluster members oper-
ate conventional machines in
machining their components

The three principal machining processes are classifi ed as turning, drilling and milling. Other operations falling into miscellaneous categories include shaping, planing, boring, broaching and sawing.
Types of machining operation
There are many kinds of machining operations, each of which is capable of generating a certain part geometry and surface texture.
Turning
In turning, a cutting tool with a single cutting edge is used to remove material from a rotating workpiece to generate a cylindrical shape. The speed motion is provided by rotating the workpiece, and the feed motion is achieved by moving the cutting tool slowly in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation of the workpiece.
Drilling
Drilling is used to create a round hole. It is accomplished by a rotating tool that typically has two or four helical cutting edges. The tool is fed in a direction parallel to its axis of rotation into the workpiece to form the round hole.
Machining Operations
Boring
In boring, a tool with a single bent pointed tip is advanced into a roughly made hole in a spinning workpiece to slightly enlarge the hole and improve its accuracy. It is a fi ne fi nishing operation used in the fi nal stages of product manufacture.
Milling
In milling, a rotating tool with multiple cutting edges is moved slowly relative to the material to generate a plane or straight surface. The direction of the feed motion is perpendicular to the tool’s axis of rotation. The speed motion is provided by the rotating milling cutter. The two basic forms of milling are:
Peripheral millingFace milling.
Other conventional machining operations include shaping, planing, broaching and sawing. Also, grinding and similar abrasive operations are often included within the category of machining

Work Place Ergonomics Need of the Hour for the cluster organizations
114Parts that make Move - Report on NAS , Hubli Auto Cluster
“Ergonomics applies information about human behaviour,
abilities and limitations and other characteristics to the
design of tools, machines, tasks, jobs and environments
for productive, safe, comfortable and eff ective human use”
(McCormick and Saunders 1993).
Work Place Ergonomics - Its Importance
A number of factors play a role in Ergonomics; these include body posture and movement (sitting, stand-ing, lifting, pulling and pushing), and environmental factors (noise, lighting, temperature, humidity).
A Good Ergonomically Designed Workplace is itself a motivation factor for the employees and hence better product quality and productivity.
General Recommendations
1. Good Lighting on the machines2. Ample Space for men, material movement3. Good Ventilation4. Designed Worktable for assembly and inspection5. Structure Designed to aid and support men for long standing work

How to Bring Ergonomics to the Factory Floor
Frequent Problems faced due to poor Ergonomics
Some of the more frequent ergonomic problems observed share one or more of these characteristics: poor product design, awkward postures, standing working positions at fi xed-height workstations, poorly designed software, inadequate monitor maintenance, chairs of inferior design, poor lighting of space, congested work place,
Poor product design. Products are not designed for ease of assembly, test, repair or packaging with regard to the human in the loop. Too many companies have failed to defi ne ergonomic goals for their products’ design, test, repair, or packaging. Regrettably, the human interface is addressed only after a problem has been identifi ed.
Awkward postures. Awkward postures are prevalent in most work environment. Whether or not they create problems depends on a wide range of factors, including the degrees of awkwardness and the presence of other musculoskeletal risk factors.
Standing working positions. Standing working positions are prevalent in most work environment, when people work at large equipment or at infrequently-used stand-alone machine tools in manufacturing environments. Potential solutions are to provide a lift either underneath the equipment or for the employee, or to restrict the job to employees of a certain height.
General Recommendations
For the appropriate working height are defi ned in relation to the user’s elbow height. Here are some rules of thumb for working height:
Six inches above elbow height for fi ne work such as proofi ng documents or inspecting small parts.Four inches above elbow height for precision work such as mechanical assembly.Same height as elbow for writing or light assembly,Four inches below elbow for coarse or medium work such as packaging
Musculoskeletal Disorder Risk Factors
There are at least six diff erent types of musculoskeletal risk factors:• Forceful exertions and motions.• Extreme or repetitive exertions, postures and motions.• Duration of exertions, postures, motions, vibration and cold.• Insuffi cient rest or pauses.• Work factors (for instance, close performance monitoring, wage

SummaryThe Need Assessment Survey and Workshop has allowed us to interact with various MSME units in Hubli closely and look into potential opportunity areas for the cluster and its members for growth. DCS provided the platform to look Design from Strategic Perspective for these cluster units and in identifying New Products and New Services for sustainable business growth.
A Need for Strategic Design Research
An eff ective Strategic Design Research is required to be conducted to identify the future products line for the cluster and cluster units and in making these units OEM independent. The identifi ed products evoving through these research will be more user-centric and will cater to specifi c user segment there by increasing the market acceptance.
New Manufacturing Process and Technologies
The current practise and the machine tools needs to be updated to produce better quality products and for ramping up the production. This can be made possible when cluster units maximize the utilization of the common facility centre and investing more such better technology machines and machine tools.
Current Cluster Eco-System
Hubli is a manufacturing hub and has a good potential to become global manufacturing hub. But most cluster units are reluctant in trying to use each others resources to mutual benefi t. Most of the manufacturers are very isolated and feel insecure to share the resources with others.
Labour Issues
There is shortage of skilled labour and this has created a lot of constraints on the manufacturers. Most of the manufactures are going for automatic and semi-automatic machines for manufacturing so as to reduce their dependency on labourers and achieve better quality products. Eff ective utilization of CFC is an alternative and this has been addressed in the proposed cluster model.
Brand Identity
Lack of ariticulated vision and low brand identity is a major set back for the cluster and its units.Eff ective methods of raising the Brand identity for the cluster and the cluster units has been addressed in the new model. A Strategic alliance between the cluster with an external Design Firm can help the cluster in communication design and other aspects towards building the Brand identity.
Raw Material
As a manufacturing hub the raw materials are easily available, but there is absence of a system in procuring graded, quality raw material. This has been addressed in the new cluster model
On-line Marketing & Web Resources
Latest Web technologies and social networking sites are evolving as powerful tools to get connected globally and hence new opportunities for business. Web marketing and e-business is evolving at rapid speed and it is high time for the cluster units to uilize these technologies for their mutual benifi ts.
