Siddhartha Vashishta Charitable Trust is an ISO 9001:2008 registered non-profit organisation based in New Delhi, India. The Trust was initiated after seeing the harsh realities and problems that plague our society today, particularly the sorry state of children of the jailed inmates and the demon of cancer affecting so many.

The children of the jailed inmates are suffering for crimes they have never committed; and the stigma along with unavailability of resources compounds their misery. These children also deserve a chance at life. The trust tries to provide education to these children along with uniforms, books and medical assistance, etc. We also try to inculcate self confidence in these children and their mothers.

Cancer requires detection and treatment at an early stage to increase chances of survival. The trust involves noted physicians, doctors and surgeons to give strength to its activities such as medical camps, seminars and conferences. The trust gets across its messages to the community through events such as fine art exhibitions, street shows, awareness seminars, etc.

In 2011, 57 families of convicts comprising around 200 wards of prisoners was extended a health care plan and issued “Health Insurance Card”- with a coverage of rupees 1 lakh from United India Insurance Company.

However in 2012 we are in discussion with ICICI PRUDENTIAL insurance to provide a comprehensive insurance policy for the wards and family of inmates with a floating coverage of up to 35 lacks to better utilize the facility and cover all the 375 children and their mothers.

His trust SVCT, which is engaged in a lot of social work, recently helped a 3-year-old get a new heart by funding her surgery. Manu Sharma's name usually evokes feeling of anger and hatred, but not many know that the man, who is serving life imprisonment in the Jessica Lal murder case, runs a charitable trust by the name Siddhartha Vashishta Charitable Trust (SVCT). Managed by his mother Shakti Rani Sharma and brother Kartik Sharma, the trust is dedicated to noble causes like child education, cancer awareness, re-employment of prisoners, etc.

Recently the trust helped a 3-year-old girl named Supriya undergo a heart transplant and save her life. The girl, who had a hole in her heart, was admitted to AIIMS, and according to Kapil, secretary, SVCT, the doctors at AIIMS contacted them with the girl's details

. The girl, who is recuperating at AIIMS is in good health, and her father, Swapan Ray, is a much more relieved man now. Sharing his happiness with us, he said, "At first when the people from the trust contacted me, I could not believe that they actually wanted to help and will bear all the expenses. Apart from the surgery, they are helping us with the hospital expenses too."

"Ever since we got to know about my daughter's illness, I've been worried sick as to how will I ever be able to manage her treatment, but all my tensions are gone now. How could I ever thank God enough for bringing these people in my life? They are my daughter's life savers," an emotional Swapan added later.

In his childhood days Siddhartha used to go with his grandfather to Missionaries of Charity in Chandigarh Sec-23, where many orphans, mentally disordered people and physically handicapped were taken care of and provided medical assistance. It was from such a little age, the desire for helping to this noble cause grew in the minds of young Siddhartha, who after many years on December 25, 2011 donated Rs. 50 Lakh for this special cause..

Man is a product of circumstances. Many a times a tryst with destiny lands him on the wrong side of the law, which may be purely accidental. Serving time in correctional facility brings him in a parallel world where people have their own suffering of a different nature. The society at large may be oblivious or even critical of such suffering. What people fail to see is the opportunities to reform during this period of incarceration.

The convicts deserve a fair deal to change themselves into better, more responsible and skilled human beings so that they may reintegrate into the main stream of Society on being discharged and the society can not turn away from its responsibility towards these families and convicts. They need acceptance, support and integration into main stream so that the approach of punishment and hatred transcends into one of reform and change.

We at SVCT have lend our hands for such a noble cause
