A supercharger is an air compressor used for forced
induction of an internal combustion engine.
A supercharger is any device that pressurizes the air
intake to above atmospheric pressure.

WORKING As the meshing lobes spin, air trapped in the
pockets between the lobes is carried between
the fill side and the discharge side.
Large quantities of air move into the intakemanifold and "stack up" to create positive
pressure.

*Roots superchargers are usually large and siton top of the engine.
However, they are the least efficientsupercharger for two reasons:
They add more weight to the vehicle
They move air in discrete bursts instead of ina smooth and continuous flow

A twin-screw supercharger operates by pulling airthrough a pair of meshing lobes that resemble a setof worm gears.
Like the Roots supercharger, the air inside a twin-
screw supercharger is trapped in pockets created bythe rotor lobes. But a twin-screw superchargercompresses the air inside the rotor housing.
This makes twin-screw superchargers more efficient,
but they cost more because the screw-type rotorsrequire more precision in the manufacturing process
They also make a lot of noise.

Working And Some Specs
A centrifugal supercharger powers an impeller -- a devicesimilar to a rotor -- at very high speeds to quickly draw airinto a small compressor housing. Impeller speeds canreach 50,000 to 60,000 RPM
A diffuser -- a set of stationary vanes that surround theimpeller -- converts the high-speed, low-pressure air tolow-speed, high-pressure air.
Centrifugal superchargers are the most efficient. They are
small, lightweight and attach to the front of the engineinstead of the top.

increased horsepower
internal combustion engines of airplanes usesuperchargers.
They draw their power directly from the
engine and use a compressor to blow
pressurized air into the combustion chamber .

A superchargers eats some ENGINE POWER.
Supercharging puts an added strain on theengine because of extra boost produced and
explosions
It costs more for maintenance.
Mileage is reduced.

Superchargers do not suffer lag -- a term used to describehow much time passes between the driver depressing thegas pedal and the engine's response.
Turbochargers suffer from lag because it takes a fewmoments before the exhaust gases reach a velocity that issufficient to drive the impeller/turbine.
Installing a turbocharger requires extensive modification of
the exhaust system. But, superchargers can be bolted to the top or side of the
engine. That makes them cheaper to install and easier toservice and maintain.
