Introduction Welcome to the Directory of Local Sustainability Practitioners!

We are fortunate to live in an area with a large and diverse community of professionals working within the intersection of critical economic, social and environmental challenges.

The HSU Offices of Sustainability and Centers for Community Based Learning and Academic and Career Advising bring you this directory of local professionals interested in being guest speakers, project mentors, Service Learning or internship hosts, or to otherwise support learning in sustainability inside and outside the classroom.

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability is the recognition that humanity is a part of the natural world, not separate from it, and that healthy social and economic systems depend on the resilience of ecological systems. Popular representations of sustainability underscore the concept’s three dimensions. Sustainability experts often use a three-legged stool as a symbol for sustainability. The social, economic, and environmental components each represent one of the stool’s legs. If one of the legs is missing, the sustainability stool can’t balance or function. A common illustration of sustainability is the diagram depicting three overlapping circles representing environmental needs, economic needs, and social needs. The area where the circles overlap and all three needs are met is the area of sustainability. How was the Directory Made?

We first surveyed faculty on their interests in working with community members. We also asked faculty how local sustainability practitioners could best interact with their students – as project mentors, guest lecturers, providing tours, or in other ways that would support learning in sustainability inside and outside the classroom. Armed with this understanding, we next contacted over 100 local professionals and asked them to complete a questionnaire about working with HSU faculty and students. This directory is based off the responses of those professionals that completed the questionnaire.

How to Use the Directory

The Directory is organized according to the many fields within sustainability, from Food Systems, to Waste Reduction, to Sustainable Living and Tribal Lands. Find your field of interest, review the professionals working in that field and what level of participation they are willing to provide, and then contact those professionals.

DeepSeeded FarmGrowing food for local markets reduces transport & packaging, keeps food dollars in the community... and tastes better! Chooses ecological farming methods that sustain the soil, water quality, and the birds & bees.

DZC Archaeology and Cultural Resource ConsultingProvides professional archaeological, historical, and cultural resource management services. Offers efficient guidance through the regulatory process, anticipating problem areas and helping clients plan for solutions.

Environmental Protection Information Center(EPIC) advocates for the protection and restoration of Northwest California’s forests, using an integrated, science-based approach, combining public education, citizen advocacy, and strategic litigation.

Friends of the Arcata MarshFOAM is the volunteer educational arm for the City of Arcata’s marsh system, the first wastewater treatment system to use constructed marshes to remove human waste. Donated land has recently doubled the area, with the creation of new salt marshes, walking trails, the Coastal Trail between cities, and a nature reserve. FOAM operates a docent program and oversees the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center.

Friends of the Eel RiverFOER is a leading voice for the protection and recovery of the Wild and Scenic Eel River watershed and its native fisheries, using science, policy, and community advocacy to support a healthy and thriving watershed.

Greenway PartnersWorks with communities who are either facing or trying to resolve critical economic, social or environmental challenges to help develop built and natural projects that have a positive community impact.

Hog Island Oyster CompanyGrows a source of protein that has very little environmental impact and improves water quality. Because of the importance of water quality to our livelihood, HIO is also involved in watershed councils, working directly with state agencies, agricultural producers, and politicians, to keep the health of the bays a priority. Hog Island Oyster is involved in a number of research projects and grants ranging from real time water quality monitoring through Sea Grant, to eelgrass monitoring with the Nature Conservancy.

Humboldt Bay National Wildlife RefugeThe coastal habitats conserved at Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge are some of the most beautiful and biologically rich places in the world. The refuge conserves precious habitat for the great diversity of birds, mammals, fish, amphibians, invertebrates, and plants that occur in the Humboldt Bay area.

Humboldt County Association of GovernmentsHCAOG is the designated Regional Transportation Planning Agency (RTPA) as well as the Service Authority for Freeway Emergencies (SAFE) and is largely responsible for programming State highway, local street and road improvements, public transportation resources, and the roadside call box program. HCAOG also bears responsibility for preparing and implementing the Regional Transportation Plan.

Humboldt County, Board of SupervisorsThe Board enacts legislation governing Humboldt County and determines overall policies for County departments and various special districts, adopts the annual budget, and fixes salaries. Humboldt County is also involved in climate action planning, building resilience to climate change, environmental protection and other sustainability efforts.

Humboldt GeographicsTeam of environmental professionals and geospatial scientists dedicated to protecting the natural world for future generations. Works with Hoopa Land Management to implement and oversee all environmental programs located within the Hoopa Valley Reservation.

Humboldt Made/Eureka Visitor CenterEconomic and social sustainability, community economic development, sustainable tourism development, small business and entrepreneur support for economic vitality of the region.

Ink People, Inc.Encourages people to exercise their humanity, build civic discourse, and engage their creative potential. Ink People is organized on community access principles and the belief that art, in all its forms, is essential to the human spirit and well being. The Ink People’s largest program is the DreamMaker Program with over 100 community initiated projects, many of which are centered in sustainability, creative reuse and recycling, and eco-art.

Kinetic UniversePromotes and practices sustainability through a yearly event, the Kinetic Grand Championship. Fostering the development of human powered transportation and art, as well as engagement with the beautiful local environment, are key goals and outcomes of the Kinetic Universe mission.

Mad River AllianceA community driven group working to protect clean local water and the ecological integrity of the Mad River watershed for the benefit of its human and natural communities

Mattole Restoration CouncilWrites, implements and administers grants for fuel load reduction, forest management, and other restoration/education projects for private landowners in the Mattole river watershed via the Mattole Restoration Council and the Lower Mattole Fire Safe Council.

McSorley ArchitecturePracticing architect with experience in sustainability and green building practices.

Mid Klamath Watershed CouncilActively plans, coordinates and implements restoration projects in the Mid Klamath sub-basin since 2001, including watershed education, plants, fire and fuels, fisheries, and wildlife. Focusing on projects that directly benefit the anadromous fisheries resource, utilizing grant funding combined with community and stakholder volunteers to implement practical, hands-on restoration projects while educating participants on restoration techniques and stewardship principles.

North Coast Co-opThe Co-op is community owned by 17,000 Californians who, by being a member-owner, are working on challenging harmful notions of consumerism, industrial agriculture, and excessive waste while providing a basic need to the community.

North Coast Growers AssociationA membership based organization that supports small scale, sustainable agriculture in Humboldt County. Operating 7 certified farmers’ markets as well as farm tours, farmers’ market tours, food access and educational programs.

Northcoast Environmental CenterPromotes understanding of the relations between people and the biosphere and to conserve, protect, and celebrate terrestrial, aquatic, and marine ecosystems of northern California and southern Oregon. The NEC has a number of programs pertaining to waste reclamation, education and advocacy.

Redwood Coast Energy AuthorityRCEA develops and implements sustainable energy initiatives that reduce energy demand, increase energy efficiency, and advance the use of clean, efficient and renewable resources. The primary focus is on sustainable energy programs and projects -- efficiency, renewables, alternative fuels, etc.

Redwood Community Action Agency Natural Resources DivisionWorks to promote healthy communities and healthy watersheds through community collaborations, planning and on-the-ground projects, including the Community Bike Kitchen, active transportation and trail projects, community gardens, and restoring watersheds for ecological functioning and community sustainability.

Redwood National and State ParksProtects and restores old growth redwood forests and associated ecosystems. Educates and provides recreation to the public. Manages invasive plant control and rare plant conservation programs, and is involved in oak woodland conservation, several restoration projects, threatened and endangered species conservation as well as charismatic mammal, aquatic invasive species, marine mammal and seabird management.

Redwood Region Audubon SocietyAdvocates for the protection of birds and wildlife by supporting local conservation efforts to protect wildlife and their habitat, organizes birding and wildlife based field trips, supports research and education.

SCRAP HumboldtSCRAP’s mission is to inspire creative reuse and environmentally sustainable behavior by providing educational programs and affordable materials to the community. This is accomplished through the creative reuse store that has supplies for art, craft, office, homes and more! Education programs include camps for kids and workshops for adults.

Scurfield Solar and HeatingServing Humboldt County for over 11 years, installing commercial and residential solar electric, solar hot water, high efficiency space and water heating systems. The design goals focus is on whole home system integration for “net-zero” homes.

Sequoia Park ZooInspires conservation of the natural world by instilling wonder, respect and passion for wildlife. Zoo guests can connect with nature and take conservation action through our many education and conservation opportunities.

True North Organizing NetworkTrue North’s leaders organize to bring solutions to many different community issues, including challenges facing water and the environment. In the past, True North has organized to bring cultural burns back to Yurok Territory, against DAPL in North Dakota, and currently for adequate community water systems on the upriver Yurok Reservation.

Trinidad Coastal Land TrustWorks to engage the community in learning about and caring for the coastal rocks and beaches along the Trinidad Coast. When the community understands and appreciates the wildlife, they are better able to protect it and care for it.

United Indian Health Services, Inc., Potawat Health VillageThe Potawot Community Food Garden is a certified Farmers Market and works with the UIHS Clients who are participants in the CalFresh Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program by accepting Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT), Women Infant and Children (WIC) Program Senior Nutrition Program, and the Diabetes Program. The garden has donated thousands of pounds of produce annually to local food banks, tribal youth events, tribal community events, and cultural activities.

Westside Community Improvement AssociationFocused on providing opportunity, programs and services that are either insufficient to or non existent in the community.
