What attracts you on the front cover when buying a music magazine?

Series1

Series2

16 people answered my survey. This question helped me to find out what people find attractive in terms of appearance on a music magazine. I was surprised to see that only one person got attracted by the ‘freebies’ on the front of the magazine as students tend to like things such as CD’s to be free. However maybe instead of asking if they were attracted by the free CD on the front cover , I could have said “the freebies” then I may have got a larger response as CD’s are going out of fashion.

How much would you be willing to pay for a Music Magazine?

Series1

Taking the recession into account I assumed that most people would go for the under £1 or £1-£2 therefore I was surprised to see that the same amount of people would pay £2.10-£3 and also £4.10-£5 – this shows that the music magazine industry is doing very well as people are willing to pay £5 just to read about the latest music. This has helped me a great deal as I can now price my magazine to accommodate for students. I think judging by the results I have for this question I will price my magazine at £2.40.

What genre of music do you prefer?

Series1

This question surprised me also as the same amount of people picked jazz and punk/rock. As I would like to keep my music magazine fresh, new and appealing to the 16-24 age group I will base my magazine on the punk/ rock genre rather than a Jazz magazine as I don’t think it will sell as many copies as the music tends to be targeted towards the older generation.

What entertainment/ music websites do you visit regularly?

Series1

This was the result that I was expecting as youtube is so popular and is simple to use and has almost every music video you can think of. I was expecting itunes to be a bit more popular as you can also watch videos and search for music on there however you do have to pay if you want to buy a single/album so that may be one of the reasons for not many people visiting it as they may just play their music through itunes rather than actually visiting the itunes store. This question has helped me as I know that I will include something about youtube in my magazine and I will know that it will interest someone.

What TV music channels do you watch regularly? The most popular music channels are on freeview which is obviously free to watch but I was surprised to that no one watches VH1, Q or Kerrang although those particular channels are on Sky which you have to pay for so maybe there is a decline in how many people have Sky at the moment. 4MUSIC has all the latest music and does top 40 charts everyday so you know what songs to look out for which encourages people to download even before the song is released which is another reason as to why CD sales have gone down as people are thinking “why wait for the CD to be released when I can download the song I like for free and I don’t have to buy a whole album just for one song”.

Where do you watch music videos?

I expected this outcome as YouTube is very simple to use where as iTunes is quite long winded and you often don't get to view the whole music video until you have bought it. I was surprised to find that only three people watch music videos on TV but through research I have found that less 16-24 year olds watch TV now as programmes are available on the internet. I will include this information in my magazine, maybe with a slogan such as “Are you a TV person?”

Where do you download your music from? I suspected that the

least amount of people would download their music from iTunes as you have to pay to download music from iTunes however you do not have to pay on any of the other illegal sites. This is especially convenient for students as they listen to a lot of music and they do not have enough money to pay for it all. I think I will include this topic in my magazine “where do you download your music from – is it safe?”

What gigs/concerts have you been to or would like to go

to?

I wasn't too sure of the outcome for this particular question but I was certain that people that took my survey would like to or have been to one of the gigs/concerts listed. What I have found is that people not only want to listen to bands music they want to see them live and they also want to see lots of bands live at the same time in order to get their moneys worth.

What bands do you like? This question was very broad but it gave me an idea of what the people that took my survey were like. Arctic monkeys proved to be the most popular which is helpful as now I know that indie/rock are the type of band I will be featuring in my music magazine.

Do you buy CD's anymore?CD’s are not selling very well at present because of downloading – it’s taken over. Downloading is much more easily accessible you don't even have to step foot outside your house in order to purchase a piece of music. In this day and age people are not as patient as they used to be and therefore want things quickly and going to a shop to buy a CD is much too much of a hassle so most people prefer to either buy them online or just simply download (either legally or illegally) both of which are very accessible on the internet.

Page 12: Survey Analysis

Survey AnalysisFrom my survey results I will be

focusing my music magazine towards people who download music for free and have fun going to gigs and partying therefore it will be a fun upbeat but down to earth rock/indie magazine suitable for ages 16-24 male and females. This will enable my magazine to sell to a wider range of people and making it more diverse and different to other standard leading rock magazines.
