“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.” 2:185

This is only verse in the Quran directly addressing Ramadan and this in itself can be taken in two perspectives that we can all take heed of , Inshaallah. Allah only ex-pands or puts detail when it is absolutely needed. As you see in this surah alone, there are numerous ayahs about divorce and The Children of Israel, because expla-nation was needed but Allah only uses one ayah for the prescription of Ramadan. Allah does not spend multiple ayahs explaining Ramadan, because Allah does not need to write a whole surah to convey its importance. If we do not see the impor-tance of Ramadan as it is in one ayah, having hundreds of ayahs would not help. The essence of Ramadan is simple and the blessings of our fasts are more than evi-dent.

Page 4: SuperMuslims Ramadan

Secondly, Allah only mentions Ramadan once, but how many times does Allah men-tion prayer? Charity? Patience? Enjoining the good and forbidding the evil? Rama-dan is now what makes us Muslim or our keys to heaven. Ramadan is a merciful op-portunity to attain taqwah, gratefulness and enter Jannah by these means. Ramadan is not a holiday that we use to be “religious” but then go on our merry way the day of Eid and so forth.

Ramadan is the perfect season to “fix” ourselves in order that we may attain Allah’s blessing. Imagine a car race, the cars are going around the track, and then they stop at their pit stop to fuel up and fix any needed problems. This is like Ramadan, we go throughout the year peddling in this dunya and Ramadan is our time to fuel up on Iman to get through the rest of the Race. If you think that you can you can pray during Ramadan with the intentions not to continue to after and still believe that you will be walking amongst the righteous in Jannah, you are in a fantasy world. You can’t trick Allah. Everything you do, whether it is in Ramadan or not, is accounted for on the Day of Judgment. Do not get me wrong, Ramadan is the time for the most blessings but how useful are these blessings if they are wiped out in the months fol-lowing Ramadan? How useful are these blessings if they are only attained during Ramadan, when in fact, Allah loves that which is consistent?

I hope that this Ramadan proves to be fruitful for everyone where we attain taqwah and gratefulness to the one that created us. Inshaallah, amen.

Morals from the Hadith & Sunnah

Ramadan according to Prophet Muhammad (SAW)By Drina S.Salleh

Douba Ghanem

Page 10: SuperMuslims Ramadan

Ramadan is here again, alhamdulillah, for those of us who are still alive to experi-ence this blessed month.

We start our fast, which is obligatory during Ramadan, upon sighting the new moon - some countries start earlier while others start a day later owing to cloudy weather. While there are cases of countries bickering on the actual first day of Ramadan, the following hadith will support decisions made by each country, and Allah SWT knows best.

Ibn Umar related that Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: “Do not start fasting un-less you see the new moon, and do not end fasting until you see it. If the weather is cloudy, then calculate when it should appear.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Putting the moon sighting behind, Ramadan is indeed my favorite time of the year. There are many hadiths that serves to explain or accompany the verses in Al-Quran on fasting. I have collected a number of favorite and relevant ones to include in this issue.

Perhaps the most popular one that I’ve learned by heart ever since I was old enough to fast is about how shaitans are chained. As a child, I was afraid of the dark and the monsters that come with, so Ramadan made be braver and freer from fear.

Page 11: SuperMuslims Ramadan

Abu Hurairah related that Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: ‘When the month of Ram-adan arrives, the gates of heaven are opened, the gates of Hellfire closed, and the shaitans are chained.” (Bukhari)

As I grew older, I became confused though because even though shaitans are chained, people still do bad things like cheating, stealing and worse, killing. In addi-tion, there are still sightings of “ghosts”.

It was also only later one that I understood and realised that even though shaitans are indisposed, we still have to struggle against our nafs. And ghosts, there really are just manifestions of jinns - there are no such things as ghosts.

Waking up for sahur/suhoor is not always easy, especially when one has to wake up again in a few hours’ time, yet there is barakah in the the pre-dawn meal.

Anas related that Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: “Take the Suhoor meal, for there is blessing in it.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

So for those who find it difficult to get up from bed, maybe prepare a bottle of water and a container of dates by the bedside. Make the effort to at least drink a glass of water and eat a few dates.

Page 12: SuperMuslims Ramadan

Speaking of dates, there is also a hadith on breaking the fast with the fruits.

Salman ibn Amir Dhabi related that Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: “Break your fast with dates, or else with water, for it is pure.” (Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi)

It is a practice among Muslims to consume dates during iftar – I love having mine with cold, creamy milk.

What to do when you eat or drink by accident? This usually occurs during the first few days, according to observation and experience, because people are still adjust-ing. Good news, there is a hadith pertaining to this.

Abu Huraira related that Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: “If anyone forgets that he is fasting and eats or drinks, he should complete his fast, for it is Allah who has fed him and given him drink.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

So once you realise the error, have peace in knowing that the fast is still valid. While we are on the topic of eating and drinking, fasting in Ramadan is not all about ab-staining from food and drinks, it is more than that. Ramadan is above all about im-proving taqwa (piety).

Abu Hurairah related that Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: “Whoever fasts during

Page 13: SuperMuslims Ramadan

Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins for-given. Whoever prays during the nights in Ramadan with faith and seeking his re-ward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. And he who passes Lailatul Qadr in prayer with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Another reward is entrance to heaven through the gate ar-Rayyan.

Sahl said that Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: “There is a gate in the Garden called ar-Rayyan which those who fast will enter on the Day of Rising, and none but they will enter it.” It will be said, “Where are the fasters?” They will stand up and none by they will enter it. When they have entered it, it will be closed and no one else will en-ter it.” (Bukhari)

While observing fast, we must also take care not to decrease our rewards by com-mitting sinful acts such as backbiting and lying.

Abu Huraira related that Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: “If a person does not avoid false talk and false conduct during fasting, then Allah does not care if he abstains from food and drink.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

While these sort of acts do not invalidate our fast, it does make it meaningless. Mus-

Page 14: SuperMuslims Ramadan

lims are also encouraged to keep their cool and refrain from getting angry as this will also reduce the rewards of fasting.

Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: “Fasting is a shield - one who fasts does not use obscenities or act in an ignorant manner. If someone argues with you or insults you, say: ‘I am fasting, I am fasting’.” (Bukhari)

Perhaps the wisdom in saying it twice is first to remind yourself that you are fasting and the second time to remind the other person that this is Ramadan.

In our desire to please Allah SWT through fasting, we must not forget that it is not a must for certain groups of people: children, mentally challenged, sick ones, women who are experiencing their monthly cycles, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and travellers.

I know children who enjoy participating in the fast - it is also considered a good time to train them when they are young. Fasting is not obligatory for pregnant and breast-feeding women but it is also not forbidden as long as it does not endanger their lives and that of their offspring.

As for travellers, Aisha (ra) related that Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: “Fast if you wish, or break fast if you wish.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Page 15: SuperMuslims Ramadan

Travellers can fast if they wish to but they are exempted from the obligation, so it is okay for them to not fast, or break fast.

Jabir ibn Abdullah related that: ‘’The Messenger of Allah (saw) was on a journey and he saw a crowd and a man who was being shaded. He asked, ‘What is this?’ They replied, ‘Someone who is fasting.’ He then said, ‘Fasting on a journey is not part of piety.’’’ (Bukhari)

While donating to the needy is also encouraged at all times, “The best charity is that given during Ramadan.” (Tirmidhi)

Muslims all over the world usually opt to assist in the breaking of fast for others, with many contributing to masjids food and drinks for the jemaah to enjoy. This is a very commendable act.

Zaid ibn Khalid Juhni related that Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: “He who provides for the breaking of the fast of another person earns the same merit as the one who was observing fast, diminishing in any way the reward of the latter.” (Tirmidhi)

After breaking fast during Maghrib, Muslims will usually prepare to head to the mas-jid to congregate for the Isya’ and the special but sunat Taraweeh prayers. The latter

Page 16: SuperMuslims Ramadan

can be performed individually or in congregations and not necessarily at the masjid. It is also followed by sunat Witr prayers.

Aisha (ra) said that “during Ramadan, Rasulullah once performed the Taraweeh in Masjid Nabawi, and the sahabah followed him in the prayers. When Rasulullah again performed the prayers the following night, an even larger congregation followed him. It was then either on the third or fourth night that Rasulullah did not come to the masjid for the Taraweeh prayers. Rasulullah explained his reason the following morn-ing by saying, ‘I noticed your fervour and did not come to the masjid to perform the prayer fearing that this Taraweeh prayer should become compulsory for you.”

Ramadan is also special because it is this month that the Quran was first revealed. Therefore it comes to no surprise why many Muslims strive to complete reading the Quran in this month to reap its blessings, which are amplified.

It is also in the last 10 days of Ramadan that Lailatul Qadr, the night of power, oc-curs. This night is said to be “better than a thousand months” .(Surah Al-Qadr)

Just one night, subhanAllah...there is no guarantee that we will get to live 1,000 years, so it is no wonder that Muslims stay up in search of this night.

Aisha related that Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: “Look for Lailatul Qadr on an odd-

Page 17: SuperMuslims Ramadan

numbered night during the last 10 nights of Ramadan.” (Bukhari)

Abu Hurairah related that Prophet Muhammad said: “Anyone who spends Lailatul Qadr in prayer, motivated by belief and in anticipation of the reward, will be forgiven his past wrong actions. Whoever fasts Ramadan motivated by belief and in anticipa-tion of the reward will be forgiven his past wrong actions.” (Bukhari)

So who doesn’t want to gain Allah SWT’s forgiveness for our past sins?

Meanwhile Anas ibn Malik related that Prophet Muhammad (saw) explained: “When Lailatul Qadr comes, Jibril descends with a company of angels who ask for bless-ings on everyone who is remembering Allah, whether they are sitting or standing.” (Baihaqi)

There is also a popular hadith where Prophet Muhammad, as related by Abu Hurai-rah, said: “The changed breath in the mouth of the faster is more fragrant to Allah the Almighty than the scent of the musk.”

This one is regarding the “bad” breath or odor coming from the mouth of the fast-ing person. This is scientifically normal of course and the argument is on whether to brush or not to brush, and with or without toothpaste.

Page 18: SuperMuslims Ramadan

Some people believe that this hadith means that brushing one’s teeth is discouraged as going through the day with a smelly mouth is better to Allah SWT. However, most scholars argue that Islam is a religion that encourages its followers to present them-selves in a clean and pleasant way, and I have to agree with them.

There is a hadith, while not specifically for Ramadan, speaks volumes of the impor-tance of cleaning the teeth/mouth:

“Were it not for the hardship that I would be placing upon my people, I would have ordered them to engage in Siwak (teeth brushing) for every prayer.” (Bukhari)

While brushing one’s teeth does not guarantee riddance of the unique odor, it does help a great deal. There is no reason why Muslims should let their teeth go, and of-fend people with bad breath, while fasting. Just don’t go crazy and start brushing every hour!

With this, I wish all SuperMuslims readers a Ramadan Kareem. Please do observe your fast in the best way possible, for Allah SWT.

Stories from the Prophets

Prophet Yusuf By Shazad Ahmed

Douba Ghanem

Page 20: SuperMuslims Ramadan

As salamu alaikum dear brothers and sisters!Ramadan Mubarak to you all!

I would like to share with you a part of the story of Yusuf (‘alaihi salam). The reason I want to show the story of this great Prophet of Allah, is especially because of the month of Ramadan. As you know, there are various temptations that appear to us, in the form of food, drink, talking bad about someone, possibly even quarreling. We know that our fast will only be avoided if we avoid the temptation to participate in those evil acts.

A great example of this is the following hadith: “Whosoever does not abandon false speech, and acting upon it, then Allah has no need for him to abandon his food and drink.” Al-Bukhari (10/473).

This does not apply to only false speech as well. Obviously we must avoid sin altogether, as it says ‘acting upon it,’ meaning that it entails false acts. The verse #24 from Surah Yusuf states:

Page 21: SuperMuslims Ramadan

Sahih InternationalAnd she (the wife of Al-‘Azeez) certainly determined [to seduce] him, and he would have inclined to her had he not seen the proof of his Lord. And thus [it was] that We should avert from him evil and immorality. Indeed, he was of Our chosen servants.

According to this, Allah says that Yusuf had to see a sign of Allah in order to be averted from the implied evil. And Allah states if that did not happen, he would have inclined to her desire!

Allah states:

Sahih InternationalIndeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.

The tafsir by Ibn-Kathir states of this Ayah:

Page 22: SuperMuslims Ramadan

This is about the thoughts that cross the mind, according to Al-Baghawi who mentioned this opinion from some of the analysts. Al-Baghawi next mentioned here a Hadith that he narrated from `Abdur Razzaq, from Ma`mar, from Hammam, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Messenger of Allah: ‘Allah the Exalted said, `If my slave intends to perform a good deed, then record it for him as one good deed; if he performs it, then record it for him multiplied ten folds. If he intends to commit an evil act but did not commit it, then record it for him as one good deed, if he left it for My sake. But if he commits it, then write it as one evil deed.’

SubhanAllah. Look at the mercy of Allah. What more reason do we need to stop ourselves from doing an evil act, just as Yusuf (‘alaihi salam) had done so? Especially in this month where we need to control our nafs, we are rewarded even more for our struggles!

As for the evidence that Yusuf saw at that moment, there are conflicting opinions to what it was. Ibn Jarir At-Tabari said, “The correct opinion is that we should say that he saw an Ayah from among Allah’s Ayat that repelled the thought that crossed his mind. This evidence might have been the image of Ya`qub, or the image of an angel, or a divine statement that forbade him from doing that evil sin, etc. There are no clear proofs to support any of these statements in specific, so it should be left vague, as Allah left it.

Page 23: SuperMuslims Ramadan

Yusuf (‘alaihi salam) maybe saw something, or had a good passing thought that reminded him of Allah. We know this as Taqwa and consciousness of Allah’s presence. And even though it is not known exactly what he saw or thought, at the very least, Taqwa was one of the factors.

Allah’s statement next,

And thus [it was] that We should avert from him evil كذلك لنصرف عنه السand immorality. Means: `Just as We showed him the evidence that turned him away from that sin, We save him from all types of evil and illegal activity in all his affairs,’ because,

,Indeed, he was of Our chosen [Mukhlasin] servants. meaning إنه من عبادنا المخلصينchosen, purified, designated, appointed and righteous. May Allah’s peace and blessings be on him.

So what is the point that is being conveyed here? How does this apply to us all, especially in this month?

The story of Yunus is the best of stories, as Allah says it. One of the gems that

Page 24: SuperMuslims Ramadan

is evident especially in this section of it is the presence of Taqwa. Yusuf (‘alaihi salam) had the Taqwa that allowed him to avert the action that he had been tempted to do!

My brothers, sisters! What is the way you can avoid temptation when it stares you in the face? What is the way that you can avoid temptation as it has the hold upon you that you feel hopeless and cannot escape it? How can we possibly overpower our nafs? How can we make our fast seem that it is worthwhile?

The answer is only one. The Taqwa you will feel in your heart, the presence of Allah, when He watches you every moment of your life. We constantly forget of His greatness. We constantly forget that if we let something that may seem good go, for Allah’s sake that He will open a door so much greater that you cannot even begin to thank Him because you will be in awe of what you will receive.

So my brothers, and sisters. If you feel your fast is making you too hungry, remember that He will reward you. If you feel that you are close to committing an act that will render your fast worthless, remember that He is watching you, and He has promised to reward you with something greater, and as a Muslim, you are required to believe that Allah will never break his promise to you, as He never broke it to Yusuf (‘alaihi salam) and granted him the honor of prophethood.

Zain Ul-Abideen By Habiba Ghanem

Excerpts from aFollower’s life

Hoda Eissa

Page 26: SuperMuslims Ramadan

Some of us have probably been Ramadan packing before. If you haven’t then it’s something that you should definitely try. There is an abundant amount of spirit that comes with packing. It is a fantastic way to get in to Ramadan mode and it is also a benevolent means of helping those that are less fortunate.

Have you ever thought of who started the packing ritual?

His name was Ali ibn Husayn ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, but he was known as Zain Ul-Abideen. Zain Ul-Abideen made it his duty to look after those that were less fortunate than he was. He had goats slaughtered regularly so that he could distribute the meat amongst the poor and he gave clothes and money to those that were deprived.

During the nights when people were asleep, Zain Ul-Abideen used to cover his face, carry a sac of food, and walk about town unrecognized in or-der to distribute the food to the poor. Many families depended on his anony-mous generosity and it was only after his death that they discovered that it was Zain Ul-Abideen who had been helping them that whole time.

Page 27: SuperMuslims Ramadan

How did they discover that it was him? Firstly, the people stopped receiv-ing food upon his death. Secondly, they found marks on his body caused by the sac of food that he used to carry.

Zain means “beauty” and Ul-Abideen means “the worshippers,” and in-deed he was given the name, Zain Ul-Abideen to epitomize his admirable character.

Zain Ul-Abideen can be taken as an example for all of us and we should all aim to adopt his giving character. Think of the smallest blessings that Allah (SWT) has bestowed on you. There are people out there who don’t have the fortune of even you’re your smallest blessings.

Take advantage of this blessed month and help those in need, and continue to help others even when the month is over. The reward for giving charity is immense and the feeling is unlike any other. It is time for all of us to become beautiful worshippers.

The Ongoing Torture by Soumaia Hashad

SuperCorner

Hoda Eissa

Page 32: SuperMuslims Ramadan

They told me I could win the game. They told me that I am strong enough to conquer my fears. I doubted.

This struggle I was going through has been torturing me for more than 3 years. I tried and tried and tried to win, but I couldn’t.

I never knew why I always failed, but I knew one thing for sure; Allah was not happy with me. And that alone killed me in many ways.

Whenever I talked this issue out with any of my friends, they kept assuring me that all people have their own sins and bad deeds that they are ashamed of. Then, they would conclude their talk by the most popular sentence: “Allah is the most forgiving”.

And that is solely my problem. I know that Allah is the most forgiving because I am hundred percent sure that He forgives me each time I wrong Him. And after each time He forgives me, I wrong Him again, and then shame starts haunting me.

This cycle has been going on for years. My situation has become so serious; I

Page 33: SuperMuslims Ramadan

commit the sin and start crying . I hate that part of me that never stops doing this sin. How I wish this part would disappear and leave me alone. I knew that this part was weak in front of satan, but I knew that satan was not the only rea-son behind my torture. It was ME, my nafs (self).

A year ago, I started searching for solutions alongside my usual way of asking Allah to forgive me. At first I started occupying my time with Islamic lectures and good friends; whenever there was a chance to get mingled with a friend or two and do something useful, I would just hop in and join. This helped me lessen the time through which I could have committed the sin, but that alone was not enough; running away was not the right solution. Thus, I decided to surf the internet to find specific ways through which I can master self-control. I was able to find many effective ways such as using calenders, charts and self-reflections.

One of the sources I have read said that with each sin a person commits, a black dot is added to his white heart till his heart turns into a black heart. This source suggested materializing the heart into a calender through which a black dot would be marked on the day the sin is committed. That way, the sinner would seek a white calender and understand how bad committing a sin is.

Page 34: SuperMuslims Ramadan

At that day, I decided to use this method alongside a self-reflection diary that would keep me aware of all the wrong doings I did throughout the day. At the beginning of my trial period, everything was going greatly. My calender stayed white for two weeks, and I started believing in a happy ending. But it all went to waste when a black dot got marked on one day; all the days that followed were stained by black dots.

I got depressed. I was so useless. I was about to succeed and win against my-self, but at the last moment I failed. How could I be so hopeless? As desperate as I was, I decided to ask for help and refrain from using the in-ternet as my advisor. I went to one of my friends who I knew would be able to help and give me a realistic piece of advice. I did not tell her what my sin was, because for one thing I knew; Allah has covered up for my sin and has not yet exposed me in front of the rest of the people. That was why I decided to cher-ish each chance Allah would give me.

As soon as I told my friend my problem, she quickly said:“First, you have to sincerely ask Allah to help you. He is the only one who could really bring you out of this misery. Secondly, try out giving away money to the poor or those in need everyday. As-Sadaka is one of the deeds that would help

Page 35: SuperMuslims Ramadan

lower God’s anger. Give away your money with the intention of stopping this sin”.

My hope rose again. There was still a breach of hope.

“Ya Allah. I know that I do not deserve neither your help nor your forgiveness, but I beg of you to save me. I am so tired of myself. I am so desperate and no one can help me except you. I have no one but you.” I pleaded to Allah in all my prayers, “How many times have I wronged you then asked for your forgive-ness? Oh Allah, I feel so shameful as I beg your forgiveness. But Allah, I am fed up with myself. Please God, end my agony.”

I could feel the tears rolling down my cheek. I was truly miserable.

As I took by my friend’s advice, I started sensing the change coming from with-in me. With each pound I gave away, I felt a black dot getting erased from my black heart. It was truly marvelous how a pound, that was not spent on myself and was spent on someone who was really in need of it, so relieving.

After finding out that As-Sadaka and supplication worked, I decided getting

back to my calender and self-reflection diaries; the change does not happen suddenly. It happens in baby steps; that is why my first solution did not work. I was in a hurry, but now I am not.

After one year of giving away money and asking God for help, I looked at my yearly calender to find that 50 days out of the 365 days of the year were black-dotted.

As I felt a bit disappointed about those silly 50 days, I concluded a few things:1. I have to fight myself, from which the problem originates.2. If I could revolve the whole world to find someone who could keep my secret and never expose me, I would never find someone as Sat-tar and amazing as Allah.3. Asking Allah for help is the easiest and most effective way to over-come a problem, since you are asking the All-Mighty.3. I still had a long way to go.

Page 39: SuperMuslims Ramadan

Page 40: SuperMuslims Ramadan
